Yes. You must remove both appearance panels at the start of installation. The panels are retained by (10) 8mm fasteners and (4) 10mm fasteners, which you must keep for reinstallation. The passenger-side panel is reinstalled after the hitch is secured. The driver-side panel will need to be trimmed (see installation step 9) or returned to the owner.
Yes. The driver's side appearance panel will need to be trimmed to accommodate the hitch, as shown in Figure 3. You must obtain the vehicle owner's permission before trimming. Alternatively, the panel can be returned to the owner unmodified. Do not use a torch to cut the panel; use appropriate cutting tools.
1. Remove both appearance panels (retain fasteners). 2. Remove the (4) existing M12 flange nuts from the vehicle end panel (retain them). 3. Place (3) flat washers on each stud. 4. Rotate the hitch behind the fascia and reinstall the flange nuts finger-tight only. 5. Determine the number of spacers needed between the hitch bar and vehicle frame cross member (minimum 1). 6. Use the pullwire to insert the carriage bolt and spacer into the frame cross member, thread the pullwire through the spacer(s) and hitch bar, then remove the pullwire and install the conical washer and hex nut. 7. Tighten all fasteners to the specified torque. 8. Reinstall the passenger-side appearance panel. 9. Trim or return the driver-side appearance panel.
The pullwire is used to guide the carriage bolt through the vehicle frame cross member and the spacer(s) and hitch bar. Insert the carriage bolt and one spacer into the frame cross member, then thread the pullwire through the spacer(s) and hitch bar as shown in Figure 4. Once the pullwire has guided the bolt into position, remove the pullwire and install the conical washer and hex nut onto the carriage bolt.
The flange nuts are tightened finger-tight only in step 4 to allow the hitch to be positioned and aligned correctly. The spacers are then determined and installed in step 5, and all fasteners are finally tightened to the specified torque in step 7 once the hitch is in its final position.
All 12mm fasteners must be tightened with a torque wrench to 62 Lb.-Ft. (84 N·M).
All ½-13 GR5 fasteners, including the carriage bolt, must be tightened with a torque wrench to 75 Lb.-Ft. (102 N·M).
You must determine the number of spacers needed for your specific installation. The manual specifies a minimum of 1 spacer. The spacers are oriented as shown in Figure 4, and any spacer that is not needed can be removed. The kit includes (3) spacers total.
Yes. Spraying the existing M12 flange nuts with a lubricant will assist with removal. After removal, wash the lubricant off the studs before proceeding with installation.
