For superior resistance to the elements, Grip Step wheel-to-wheel running boards are made from aluminum alloy. They're strong, lightweight and highly corrosion-resistant. To maximize this corrosion resistance, the running boards and brackets are both shielded in a durable black powder coat finish. The running boards also feature hardened plastic end caps that eliminate sharp corners and add a professional touch. All LUVERNE Grip Step wheel-to-wheel steps are designed for vehicle-specific applications. This ensures a custom fit and the easiest possible installation. The running boards mount with vehicle-specific brackets and use pre-existing mounting points to avoid difficult modifications. You must remove the factory front, center, and rear body mount bolts. You must also loosen (not remove) the spring hanger bolts on both sides of the vehicle to allow the spring hanger mounting brackets to be positioned behind the bolt flanges.
On the left side, assemble items #1, #3, and #14 using three 3/8"-16 x 1.0" screws (item #13), 3/8" flat washers (item #10), and 3/8" flange nuts (item #11). Torque to 19 lb. ft. Repeat for the right side using the corresponding right-side brackets.
1. On the short threaded end of the stud (item #12), install a 3/8" serrated flange nut (item #11) backwards to the bottom of the thread. 2. Install a 3/8" flat washer (item #10) and rubber cushion washer (item #9) tight against the serrated flange nut. The end of the stud must be recessed in the rubber washer approximately 3/16". 3. On the long threaded end, install a 3/8" serrated flange nut (item #11) backwards to near the bottom of the threads.
Insert the stud from the inboard (frame) side through the lowest hole in the bent flange of the bracket that allows the rubber washer to seat firmly against the side wall of the frame. Install a 3/8" serrated flange nut (item #11) on the outboard end of the stud finger tight only at this stage.
Remove the factory front body mount bolts and install the front mounting bracket (items #1, #3) to the front body mount, leaving fasteners finger tight. Remove the factory center body mount bolts and install the center mounting bracket (item #4) to the center body mount, leaving fasteners finger tight. Note: Center mounting brackets (items #4, #5) are used as rear brackets on Regular Cab models only.
Remove the factory rear body mount bolts and install the rear inboard mounting bracket (item #8) with washer (item #15) to the rear body mount, leaving fasteners finger tight. Then attach the rear outboard mounting bracket (item #6) to the back side (towards the rear of the vehicle) of the rear inboard bracket using three 3/8"-16 x 1.0" screws (item #13), 3/8" flat washers (item #10), and 3/8" flange nuts (item #11). Torque to 19 lb. ft. Note: There is a difference between Double Cab and Crew Cab applications; use the correct holes as shown in the manual figures.
1. Loosen the spring hanger bolt or nut just enough to slide the inboard spring hanger mounting bracket (item #18) behind the flange of the bolt or nut. Position the inboard bracket with the channel open to the outboard side. 2. Install the outboard spring hanger mounting bracket (item #19) so its inboard portion fits inside the channel of the inboard bracket, using a 3/8-16 x 2" bolt (item #16), 3/8" flat washer (item #10), 1/2" flat washer (item #20), and 3/8-16 nylon lock nut (item #17). Leave loose until the step board is in place.
1. Preassemble the front bracket on the left side. 2. Assemble the load reaction studs and hardware. 3. Attach the load reaction stud assemblies to the mounting brackets. 4. Install the front, center, and rear mounting brackets to their respective factory body mount points, leaving fasteners finger tight. 5. Attach the rear outboard bracket to the rear inboard bracket and torque to 19 lb. ft. 6. Install the spring hanger brackets. 7. Install the step boards per their own instructions. 8. Position the load reaction bolt assembly and tighten the flange nuts to 19 lb. ft. 9. Repeat steps 1-8 for the right side.
Most fasteners are left finger tight during initial assembly. The front bracket preassembly (step 2) is torqued to 19 lb. ft. immediately. The rear outboard bracket attachment (step 5.4) is torqued to 19 lb. ft. The spring hanger bolts are left loose until the step board is in place (step 6.2). Final tightening of the load reaction flange nuts occurs after the step board is installed (step 8), torqued to 19 lb. ft. Body mount fasteners must be torqued to manufacturer specifications after the step board is installed.
Torque the front bracket preassembly (3/8"-16 x 1.0" screws with flat washers and flange nuts) to 19 lb. ft. Torque the rear outboard bracket attachment (3/8"-16 x 1.0" screws with flat washers and flange nuts) to 19 lb. ft. Torque the load reaction stud flange nuts to 19 lb. ft. after the step board is installed. Body mount fasteners must be torqued to manufacturer specifications.
The load reaction studs (item #12) are double-ended, 3/8-16 thread, 4.0" long, zinc-plated steel. The short threaded end receives a serrated flange nut backed off to the bottom of the thread, then a flat washer and rubber cushion washer with the stud end recessed approximately 3/16" into the rubber. The long threaded end receives a serrated flange nut backed off to near the bottom of the threads.
The rubber cushion washers (item #9) are 0.354" inner diameter, 1.00" outer diameter, and 0.75" thick. Six are included in the kit. They are installed on the load reaction studs with the stud end recessed approximately 3/16" into the rubber.
Due to excessive thread locker in the body mount bolt area on 2010+ GM Silverado/Sierra, use caution when removing the body mount bolts. This may require extra effort or heat to break the bolts free.
Ensure that the mounting brackets do not touch the inside wall of the body mount housing. This is critical to proper installation and must be verified before torquing the body mount fasteners to manufacturer specifications.
CURT recommends regular inspection and maintenance of the leaf spring attachment point per GM Technical Service Bulletin 09-03-09-001E: Clunking Noise from Rear of Vehicle (Re-torque Leaf Spring Bolts) for 2007-2017 Chevrolet and GMC trucks. Failure to regularly inspect and maintain factory-recommended torque values may result in damage to the vehicle.
