Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Reese® 5th Wheel Hitch Features & Benefits
The Reese 30K fifth wheel hitch (part number 30054) is designed for medium duty truck applications such as Freightliner or Ford F-650. It is designed for use with recreational fifth wheel trailers only. It is NOT intended for light duty pick-up trucks. Hitch applications other than recreational fifth wheel trailers must be approved in writing by Reese's Engineering Department.
The Reese 30054 fifth wheel hitch requires only a SAE 2-inch kingpin.
The maximum gross trailer weight for the Reese 30054 hitch is 30,000 pounds. Gross weight of trailer must not exceed this limit.
The maximum kingpin weight for the Reese 30054 hitch is 7,500 pounds. Approximately 15–25% of the gross trailer weight should be on the hitch (pin weight). If in doubt, have kingpin weight measured by a qualified facility.
Your towing vehicle must have a manufacturer's rated towing capacity equal to or greater than the gross trailer weight (dry weight of the trailer plus payload). The trailer and its contents together must not exceed the truck, hitch, and/or trailer tow ratings.

The distance from the back of the truck cab to the center of the rear truck axle should be approximately 4 inches greater than one-half the trailer width. If the pin box contacts the hitch handle or its latch when turning, the trailer may become unhitched, which could result in death or serious injury.
The hitch includes: 3/4" bolts (4), 3/4" lock washers (4), 3/8" latch bolt (1), snap rings (4), spring cotter pins (2), cotter pins (3), 3/8" washers (3), 3/8" nut (1), and springs (2). The 5/8" carriage bolts, locking nuts, and flat washers required to bolt the base assembly to the truck frame are NOT supplied and must be obtained separately.
You must supply four grade 5 or higher 5/8" carriage bolts, four locking nuts, and four flat washers to bolt the base assembly through the truck floor to the steel support structure. These fasteners are not included with the hitch.
The manual does not specify which tools are required for installation. You will need tools to mark, pilot drill, and finish drill 5/8" diameter holes through the truck bed and 1/2" steel plate, and to torque the 5/8" carriage bolts to 115 lb-ft and 3/4" bolts to 200 lb-ft. A torque wrench, drill with appropriate bits, and wrenches will be needed.
Yes. The base must be bolted through the floor of the tow vehicle to a substantially designed steel support structure that connects the hitch to the tow vehicle frame. A 1/2" steel plate must be welded to brackets and bolted to the truck chassis. The floor alone is not strong enough to carry the loads imposed by the trailer. Do not install by fastening to the floor of the tow vehicle only.
The connection for trailer wiring should be in the side of the truck bed between the driver's seat and the wheel well for the back truck axle. Installation of the connection rearward of the wheel well may result in the user placing their body between the truck and trailer, which should be avoided whenever possible.
Attach each side plate (29) to the base using 3/4" bolts (15) and lockwashers (16). Side plates can be mounted with flanges facing inward or outward to fit your mounting area. Note: when mounting flanges inward, only 2 height adjustments will be available.
Place the base assembly vertically above to 4 inches ahead of the rear axle. Position it centrally across the width of the truck with the long axis parallel to the cab back. Check that the distance from the center line of the base to the back of the cab is at least 4 inches greater than one-half the trailer width.
Using the 4 square holes in the base as a template, mark, pilot drill, and finish drill to 5/8" diameter. The drilled holes must go through the truck bed deck and through the 1/2" steel plate underneath.
Install the outer tubular handle (35) over the solid inner handle (17) and pin them together with a cotter pin (34). Bend the cotter pin to hold it in place. Check that the latch bolt (19) is snug but the latch (18) will move with reasonable hand effort. Check that all snap rings (20) are in place.
Place the head (22) and rocker (21) assembly into the base assembly (28) and secure with stop rods (23) and spring cotter pins (24).
Torque the 5/8" carriage bolts to 115 lb-ft.
Torque the 3/4" bolts to 200 lb-ft.
Before each trip or maneuver: (1) Lubricate the skid plate surface with automotive chassis grease or use a plastic lube plate (Reese No. 74295, maximum 3/16" thickness, minimum 10" diameter). (2) Operate the handle and check that the jaws open and close freely. (3) Visually check all bolts and nuts fastening the hitch to the truck bed and frame to ensure they are tight. (4) Verify all hitch pins are in place and spring retaining pins are installed. (5) Visually check the head pivot connection and inspect cotter pins to ensure they are in place and in good condition.
Lubricate the skid plate surface with automotive type chassis grease or use a plastic lube plate (Reese No. 74295). The plastic lube plate must not exceed 3/16" thickness to ensure the hitch will operate properly, and must be 10" diameter or larger to properly distribute kingpin weight. Use engine oil or spray lube to lubricate pivot points of moving parts within the hitch, including the grooves between roller pins and roller walls in the base assembly (8 places), and all pivot points in the head assembly.
Using trailer jacks, adjust the trailer height so that the bottom of the trailer pin box is 1/2 to 1 inch below the hitch skid plate. During the hitching maneuver, the bottom of the trailer pin box should come into contact with the skid plate ramp. If the pin box is above the hitch skid plate, the king pin may be too high and come to rest on top of closed jaws or not completely inside the jaws, which could result in trailer separation.
Follow these steps in order: (1) Place blocks firmly against front and rear of each trailer wheel. (2) Adjust trailer height so the bottom of the pin box is 1/2 to 1 inch below the hitch skid plate. (3) Rotate the latch toward the trailer and free of the groove in the handle. (4) With the handle in the closed position, back the truck slowly into the trailer. As the king pin enters the hitch, it will push the jaws open and extend the handle. As the king pin completely enters, the jaws will spring closed and the handle will return to the closed position. (5) Visually check that the bottom of the pin box is resting on top of the hitch with no space between these surfaces. If space exists, the trailer has not been properly hitched—do not tow. (6) Rotate the latch to the closed position in the groove of the handle to lock the jaws closed. If the latch is not aligned with the groove, the trailer has not been properly connected—do not tow. (7) Connect the electrical cable and breakaway switch cable, and raise the tailgate. Do not place your body under the trailer or between truck and trailer unless all trailer tires are blocked, landing gear is resting on firm ground, and the truck is stationary in park with emergency brake on.
Do not attempt to hitch by using trailer jacks to lower the trailer. This could result in the king pin coming to rest on top of the skid plate instead of within the hitch opening where the jaws are located. The king pin could slide off the hitch and the trailer could drop, resulting in death or serious injury.
The pull test verifies that the trailer is properly hitched before towing. With all trailer wheels firmly blocked, landing gear resting on firm ground, and the truck stationary with emergency brake on: release the truck's emergency brake, apply the trailer brakes, make sure no one is between truck and trailer, and try to pull the trailer slowly forward with the truck. If the trailer is properly hitched, the wheel blocks and trailer brakes should keep the truck from moving forward. If the trailer is not properly hitched, the trailer will separate from the hitch and the truck will move forward, leaving the trailer behind. Failure to perform this test may result in death or serious injury.
Follow these steps in order: (1) Place blocks firmly against front and rear of each trailer wheel. (2) Lower the trailer landing gear until the feet are resting on firm ground. (3) Make sure the truck is in park with emergency brake on. (4) Lower the truck tailgate if necessary. (5) Disconnect the power cable and breakaway switch cable. (6) Rotate the latch toward the trailer and free of the groove in the handle. (7) Pull the hitch handle out completely until it latches in the open position so the king pin is no longer securely grasped by the jaws. If the handle does not pull out, there is probably pressure against the jaws—back the truck slightly, reset the emergency brake, then pull the handle out completely. (8) After making certain no one is standing between truck and trailer or in front of the truck, drive the truck slowly away from the trailer. (9) Close the hitch jaws by pushing the handle forward and up. (10) Keep wheel blocks in place to prevent the trailer from moving unexpectedly. Do not place your body under the trailer or between truck and trailer unless all trailer tires are blocked, landing gear is resting on firm ground, and the truck is stationary in park with emergency brake on.
Maintenance includes: (1) Recheck the tightness of all hardware every 1000 miles of use. (2) Before each trip, lubricate the skid plate surface and operate the handle to check that the jaws open and close freely. Visually check all bolts and nuts, verify all hitch pins are in place, and inspect cotter pins in the head pivot connection. (3) Lubricate with engine oil or spray lube at the locations shown in Figures 19-22, including the grooves between roller pins and roller walls in the base assembly (8 places) and all pivot points in the head assembly.
Reese warrants the 30054 fifth wheel hitch for 5 years from the date of purchase against defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service (ordinary wear and tear excepted) to the original consumer purchaser when a Reese mounting kit is used. Products used by professional haulers are subject to a one-year warranty. Reese will replace defective parts free of charge when presented to any Reese dealer or warehouse, or when returned to the factory with transportation charges prepaid. This warranty covers defective parts replacement only; labor charges, damage incurred in installation or replacement, and incidental and consequential damages are excluded. Any damage resulting from misuse, abuse, neglect, accident, improper installation, or use violative of the instructions will void the warranty.

If there is space between the bottom of the pin box and the top of the hitch, the trailer has not been properly hitched. Do not tow. Repeat the hitching steps 1–6 until the trailer is properly hitched with no space between these surfaces.
If the latch is not aligned with the groove in the handle, the trailer has not been properly connected to the hitch. Do not tow. Repeat the hitching steps 1–7 until the trailer is properly hitched and the latch is aligned with the groove in the handle.
If the trailer separates from the hitch during the pull test, the trailer was not properly hitched. This occurs when the king pin is not securely grasped by the hitch jaws. Repeat the entire hitching procedure, ensuring that the pin box height is correct (1/2 to 1 inch below the skid plate), the latch is free of the handle groove before hitching, and the latch is fully closed in the handle groove after hitching. Do not tow until the trailer is properly hitched and the pull test is successful.
