Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. The products suit RV owners, horse and livestock haulers and anyone towing near the upper end of a vehicle's rating.

The Reese M5 Fifth Wheel Hitch 27,000 lbs. Capacity, Talon Jaw, Complete System, Ford (Part #RE30922) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The M5 hitch is rated for 27,000 lbs with a maximum pin weight of 6,750 lbs. Never exceed your towing vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
Yes. The M5 Head (30892) and Center Section (30894) are sold separately from the legs. Leg assembly instructions are provided under their individual part numbers. The M5 Ford Leg is part number 30923.
You will need M13 and M24 wrenches or sockets, a torque wrench, and a grease gun with needle adapter. A typical grease needle is generally available at auto parts stores.
You must maintain a minimum of 6 inches clearance between the truck bed rail and the bottom of the trailer. The M5 center section has 4 inches of overall vertical adjustment to help achieve this.
Each M16 hex-head bolt must be torqued to 220 ft-lbs. This should be checked every 1,000 miles to ensure bolts remain properly tightened.
Yes. Apply grease to the skid plate surface and to the 5th wheel jaw and/or kingpin on the trailer before hitching. The head comes pre-greased. Use a grease needle to apply grease via the grease fitting on top of the unit.
Before pulling the trailer, ensure trailer wheels are firmly blocked, trailer landing gears are firmly on the ground supporting trailer weight, the trailer brake is on, and no one is between the truck and trailer. Try to pull the trailer slowly forward. If properly hitched, the trailer will not separate.
After tightening the M16 bolts to 220 ft-lbs, verify that the hitch is tight to the truck bed by lifting each side of the hitch. This confirms secure attachment.
The M5 head unit (part number 30892) includes: one head assembly, one handle, two ½" pull pins, two spring clips, two M8 carriage bolts, two M8 lock washers, and two M8 nuts. The center section (30894) and legs are sold separately. Fasteners for leg attachment are supplied with the leg unit.
Yes, the head comes pre-greased. However, you should apply additional grease before first use and periodically thereafter. Apply grease to the skid plate surface, the 5th wheel jaw and/or kingpin on the trailer, and via the grease fitting on top of the unit using a grease needle.
Yes, plastic lube plates can be used to avoid messy grease. However, the plate must not exceed 3/16" in thickness to ensure the hitch works properly. REESE 5th Wheel Lube Plate #83001 is recommended.
Slide the handle tube over the bar as shown in the manual. Securely tighten it with two M8 carriage bolts, two M8 lock washers, and two M8 nuts using an M13 wrench. The handle should be snug when fully tightened.
1. Apply grease to the interface surfaces. 2. Place the head unit on top of the center section, avoiding pinch points. 3. Insert the pull pin as shown in the manual and secure with spring clips on both sides. 4. Inspect through the sight holes on top of the head pan to confirm the clips are assembled correctly.
A red indicator means the head is in either the Ready-to-Receive position or the Unhitching position. In Ready-to-Receive, the handle is pulled out fully until an audible click is heard and holes do not align for the bail pin. The handle is easily movable towards the cab and returns to default position when released.
A green indicator means the head is in the Locked Position, which occurs when the trailer is coupled to the hitch. In this position, the handle is in a position where holes align for bail pin insertion, and the trailer kingpin is securely held by the 5th wheel jaw.
The head is in Ready-to-Receive position when: the handle is pulled out fully until an audible click is heard and the holes do not align for the bail pin; the handle is easily movable towards the cab and returns to default position upon release; and the indicator shows red.
To move the head to the Unhitching Position: pull the handle out fully until an audible click is heard, then rotate the handle towards the cab. The indicator will show red. If the handle will not move with ease, do not force it—the jaw may not open if under tension. Slowly reverse the truck to remove load on the jaw before attempting to unhitch.
The bottom of the pin box should be aligned with the top of the skid plate ramp, plus or minus 1 inch. This ensures proper contact and engagement with the 5th wheel jaw.
Before hitching: 1. Ensure the 5th wheel is correctly secured to the truck. 2. Lower the truck tailgate if necessary. 3. Place blocks or chocks firmly against each trailer wheel to prevent forward or rearward motion. 4. Verify the pin box is at correct height (bottom aligned with top of skid plate ramp ±1 inch). 5. Ensure the head is in Ready-to-Receive position by pulling the handle out fully until an audible click is heard.
1. Ensure the head is in Ready-to-Receive position. 2. Back the truck slowly into the trailer so the trailer kingpin and 5th wheel funnel align. When the indicator turns completely green, the trailer kingpin is securely held. 3. Insert the bail pin into the lock hole. 4. Perform a pull test with trailer wheels blocked, landing gears on ground, and trailer brake on. 5. Connect electrical and breakaway switch cables. 6. Remove chocks and lift trailer jacks.
If the jaw does not close even when fully backed into the trailer, the jaw may be under compression. Pull the truck slowly forward to remove the load on the jaw. The handle will then fully latch and the jaw will close.
Before unhitching: 1. Ensure the trailer is secure by placing blocks or chocks firmly against each trailer wheel and lowering trailer jacks firmly to the ground. 2. Lower the truck tailgate if necessary. 3. Disconnect the electrical cable and breakaway switch cable. 4. Ensure no person or vehicle is in the vicinity of the truck or trailer, as they may shift during unhitching.
1. Remove the bail pin from the locking hole. 2. Move the handle to the Unhitching Position by pulling it out fully and rotating it towards the cab. 3. Drive the truck slowly away from the trailer. If the handle will not move with ease, do not force it—reverse the truck slowly to remove load on the jaw first.
If there is tension between the truck and trailer, the truck or trailer may shift when the handle is pulled. In this case, the handle will start to return to the Ready-to-Receive position, but the trailer will still uncouple. Ensure no person or vehicle is in the vicinity during this process.
Apply grease to the skid plate surface and trailer kingpin before every use. Annually or as required, apply grease via the grease fitting on top of the unit using a grease needle, and apply spray-on white lithium grease to internal mechanisms by rotating the handle a few times to distribute the lubricant.
Apply spray-on white lithium grease to the internal mechanisms and rotate the handle a few times to distribute the lubricant. You may need to wipe down the unit to remove large debris before application. This should be done annually or as required.
The grease fitting is located on the top of the unit and is accessible through the logo/load rating slot. A grease needle is required to apply grease via this fitting. A typical grease needle is generally available at auto parts stores.
Before every trip, verify that the lynch pins, foot bracket, and castle nut are undamaged and securely locked. Ensure the lynch pins are securely locked in place with little to no vertical play. The lynch pin should be properly oriented in relation to the foot.
Every 1,000 miles, check the M16 hex bolts that connect the center section to the legs to ensure they are still torqued to 220 ft-lbs.
If a handle appears loose and rattles or cannot be closed fully, remove the lynch pin and adjust the castle nut by hand to a position where the handle does not rattle or is able to close. Once adjustment is satisfactory, re-insert the lynch pin and close the loop over the nut to hold it in place. Do not install the lynch pin until final adjustments are made.
Remove the two lynch pins and position the legs over the pucks with the handles in the OPEN position. Once the unit has been placed in the pucks, rotate the handles back to the CLOSED position and insert the lynch pins back into the leg to prevent the handles from opening during operation.
The M5 Ford Leg has 4 inches of vertical adjustment. Legs should be attached at the same height on both sides of the unit to ensure a minimum of 6 inches clearance between the truck bed rail and the bottom of the trailer.
Using four M16x2x40mm hex head bolts, attach the legs to the center section structure by threading the bolts from the inside of the center section into the threaded portion of the legs. Finger tighten the bolts initially until final adjustments are made. Ensure the collars on the leg are completely seated in the corresponding holes in the center section.
The M5 Ford Leg comes pre-assembled, adjusted, and ready to install. You do not need to disassemble or adjust internal components before installation; you only need to attach it to the center section and secure it to the truck bed.
Yes. The center section can be rotated 180 degrees to increase the gap between the trailer front and the truck cab by 1-1/2". This involves removing the head, removing the bolts holding the legs to the center section, rotating the center section, and re-installing the head and legs. The head springs must also be flipped and tightened to 7-8 ft-lbs. Refer to page 7 of the Head & Center Section manual for detailed instructions.
The maximum pin weight is 6,750 lbs. Never exceed your towing vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
Under no circumstances should you exceed the towing vehicle manufacturer's recommended vehicle towing capacity. Failure to follow installation and hitch-up instructions may cause property loss, serious injury, or death.
When installing the head on the center section, avoid putting any body parts in the pinch points. These are located at the pivot interface where the head connects to the center section. Place hands or fingers on either side of the pivot interface to prevent pinching.
The pivot assembly resistance is preset at the factory. If the head pivots and makes noise when the trailer is not attached, adjust the resistance by tightening the pivot bolt 1/2 turn at a time, up to a maximum of 2 full turns. Access the pivot bolt and nut through the open end wrench access point shown in the manual.
Yes, the pivot assembly can be rebuilt if required. Instructions to do this will be provided in a rebuild kit.
The pivot assemblies can easily be greased with a grease gun that has a needle adapter installed. Apply grease via the grease fitting on the top of the unit, which is accessible through the logo/load rating slot.
Yes, there is a hole provided for a 5/16" eye bolt to attach the trailer breakaway cable to the head. This hole is located on the head and is shown in the maintenance section of the manual.
Remove the lynch pin from the leg. Adjust the castle nut by hand to a position where the handle does not rattle or is able to close fully. Once the adjustment is satisfactory, re-insert the lynch pin and close the loop over the nut to hold it in place.
Remove the lynch pin from the leg. Adjust the castle nut by hand to a position where the handle is able to close. Once the adjustment is satisfactory, re-insert the lynch pin and close the loop over the nut to hold it in place.
If the handle will not move to the unhitching position with ease, do not force it. The jaw may not open if under tension. Slowly reverse the truck to remove the load on the jaw before attempting to unhitch the trailer. Once the load is removed, the handle should move freely to the unhitching position.
If the jaw does not close even when fully backed into the trailer, the jaw may be under compression. Pull the truck slowly forward to remove the load on the jaw. The handle will then fully latch and the jaw will close. Once the jaw is closed and the indicator shows green, the trailer is properly hitched.
The pivot assembly resistance is preset at the factory. To reduce noise, tighten the pivot bolt 1/2 turn at a time, up to a maximum of 2 full turns. Access the pivot bolt and nut through the open end wrench access point. Do not exceed 2 full turns.
Verify that the M16 hex bolts connecting the legs to the center section are torqued to 220 ft-lbs. Check every 1,000 miles to ensure bolts remain properly tightened. After tightening, verify that the hitch is tight to the truck bed by lifting each side of the hitch.
