Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. The products suit RV owners, horse and livestock haulers and anyone towing near the upper end of a vehicle's rating.

On The Ball | REESE M5 fifth wheel hitch
The M5 Head & Center Section is rated for 27,000 lbs towing capacity with a maximum pin weight of 6,750 lbs. However, you must not exceed your towing vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity or the lowest rated component in your entire towing system.
Yes. The M5 Head & Center Section (parts 30892 & 30894) are sold without legs. The M5 ISR 27K Legs (part 30927) are sold separately and must be purchased and installed to complete the hitch system. The legs attach to the center section and mount to your truck bed.
The M5 ISR 27K Legs require the existing part 30153 above-bed rails. These rails are required for proper installation and must be in place before the leg assembly can be mounted to your truck bed.
A minimum of 6 inches of clearance is required between the truck bed rail and the bottom of the trailer. The M5 ISR 27K Legs have 4 inches of vertical adjustment to help achieve this clearance. The legs should be attached at the same height on both sides of the unit.
Yes. The center section can be rotated 180 degrees to increase the gap between the trailer front and truck cab by 1.5 inches. This requires removing the head unit, unbolting the legs from the center section, rotating the center section, and reinstalling all components. The king pin location should remain ahead of the truck rear axle with proper truck cab clearance.
Required tools include: M13 wrench, M24 socket and wrench, torque wrench, and a grease needle (typically available at auto parts stores). For the head spring adjustment, a 7/16 inch socket is needed. A lithium grease gun with needle adapter is recommended for annual maintenance.
Fastener kit 30892F is required for installation of the M5 Head & Center Section. This kit contains the necessary bolts, washers, and nuts for assembly.
The M5 Head & Center Section includes: 1 Assembly Head Unit, 1 Handle, 2 half-inch Pull Pins, 2 Spring Clips, 2 M8 Carriage Bolts, 2 M8 Lock Washers, 2 M8 Nuts, 1 Center Section (30894), 2 M16x2x40mm class 10.9 Bolts, 2 5/8-inch Conical Washers, and 2 M16x2 class 10 Nuts. Additional bolts and washers are supplied with the leg unit.
The M5 ISR 27K Legs (part 30927) include: 2 M5 ISR Legs (30926), 4 M16x2x40mm class 10.9 Bolts, 4 5/8-inch Conical Washers, 2 M16x2 class 10.9 Nuts, 4 half-inch Pins, 4 Spring Clips, and 1 Anti-Rattle Kit containing 4 Rod Ends, 4 Castle Nuts, 4 Lynch Pins, 4 half-inch Pins, and 4 Spring Clips.
Before installation, read all instructions completely. Ensure your truck has the required part 30153 above-bed rails installed. Verify that your truck bed is clean and ready for mounting. Have all required tools available: M13 wrench, M24 socket and wrench, torque wrench, and grease needle. Ensure fastener kit 30892F is on hand. The head unit comes pre-greased but you will need lithium grease for ongoing maintenance.
Slide the handle tube over the bar as shown in the manual. Securely tighten the handle using the M8 Carriage Bolts, M8 Lock Washers, and M8 Nuts with an M13 wrench. The handle should be snug when fully tightened.
Using 4 M16x2x40mm Hex Head Bolts with 4 5/8-inch Conical Washers, attach the legs to the center section structure by threading the bolts from the inside of the center section into the threaded portion of the legs. Place the remaining 2 M16x2x40mm Hex Head Bolts in the center hole location on both legs using 2 5/8-inch conical washers and 2 M16x2 Nuts. Finger tighten all bolts initially until final adjustments are made. Ensure the collars on each leg are completely seated in the corresponding holes in the center section.
First, apply grease to the pivot area as shown in the manual. Place the head unit on top of the center section, being careful to avoid pinch points. Insert the pull pin as shown in the manual and secure with spring clips on both sides. Inspect through the sight holes on top of the head pan to verify the clips are assembled correctly.
After attaching the legs to the center section and making height adjustments, place the complete unit into the existing part 30153 above-bed rails, oriented as shown in the manual. Follow the anti-rattle kit instructions and use the solid mounted pin as shown. Do not tighten fasteners until after the next step. Once the ISR Legs are pinned and securely held in the above-bed rails, tighten each M16 hex-head bolt to 220 ft-lbs of torque.
Each M16 hex-head bolt connecting the center section to the legs must be tightened to 220 ft-lbs of torque. This torque specification must be maintained and checked every 1,000 miles during the life of the product.
The head spring bolts should be tightened to 7-8 ft-lbs of torque. When installed properly, the springs should point upward toward the truck cab and flex freely.
Yes. A hole is provided on the head unit for a 5/16-inch eye bolt to attach the trailer breakaway cable. This cable must be connected during the hitching procedure and disconnected before unhitching.
The head must be in the Ready-to-Receive position when coupling to a trailer. In this position, the handle is pulled out so the holes do not align for the bail pin, the handle is easily movable toward the cab and returns to default position upon release, and the indicator shows RED. The hitch will latch automatically when the truck is backed completely into the trailer king pin, at which point the indicator will show 100% GREEN.
Before hitching, verify: (1) the 5th wheel is correctly secured to the truck, (2) the truck tailgate is lowered if necessary, (3) blocks or chocks are firmly against each trailer wheel to prevent motion, (4) the pin box is at correct height for hitching (bottom of pin box aligned with top of skid plate ramp ±1 inch), and (5) the head is in Ready-to-Receive position. After latching, perform a pull test with trailer wheels blocked, landing gears on ground, and trailer brake on to confirm proper hitching before proceeding.
After confirming the trailer is properly hitched via the pull test, insert the bail pin into the lock hole and secure it with a lock for added security. Then connect the electrical cable and breakaway switch cable between truck and trailer. Finally, remove the chocks/blocks and lift the trailer jacks.
Before unhitching, ensure the trailer is secure with blocks/chocks firmly against each wheel and trailer jacks lowered and firmly on the ground. Lower the tailgate as necessary and disconnect the electrical and breakaway switch cables. Ensure no person or vehicle is in the vicinity of the truck or trailer, as they may shift when unhitching. Remove the bail pin and move the handle to the unhitching position by pulling out and rotating toward the cab, then drive the truck slowly away from the trailer.
The bottom of the pin box should be aligned with the top of the skid plate ramp within ±1 inch. This ensures proper contact and latching of the hitch when backing into the trailer.
Before any trip, verify that the pins and spring clips are undamaged and secure. This quick inspection ensures the hitch is safe for towing.
Every 1,000 miles, check the M16 hex bolts that connect the center section to the legs to ensure they are still torqued to 220 ft-lbs of torque. Retightening may be necessary if bolts have loosened.
Before each use, apply grease to the skid plate surface to provide a lubricated surface for trailer attachment. Also apply grease to the 5th wheel jaw and/or kingpin on the trailer. Plastic lube plates can be used to avoid messy grease, but must not exceed 3/16 inch in thickness. REESE 5th Wheel Lube Plate #83001 is recommended.
Annually or as required: (1) Apply grease via the grease fitting on top of the unit using a grease needle (the head comes pre-greased). (2) Apply spray-on white lithium grease to internal mechanisms and rotate the handle a few times to distribute lubricant. (3) Use a grease gun with needle adapter to grease the pivot assemblies. (4) If the head pivots and makes noise when the trailer is not attached, adjust resistance by tightening the pivot bolt 1/2 turn at a time (maximum 2 full turns). The pivot assembly can be rebuilt if required using a rebuild kit.
The grease fitting is located on the top of the unit and is accessible through the logo/load rating slot. A grease needle (typically available at auto parts stores) is required to apply grease to this fitting.
If the head pivots and makes noise when the trailer is not attached, the pivot assembly resistance needs adjustment. Tighten the pivot bolt 1/2 turn at a time to increase resistance. Do not exceed 2 full turns maximum. The pivot bolt and nut are accessible with an open-end wrench as shown in the manual.
After installation, verify that the hitch is tight to the truck by lifting each side of the hitch. The unit should not move or shift. Additionally, before any trip, verify that all pins and spring clips are undamaged and secure.
After inserting the pull pins and securing them with spring clips, inspect through the sight holes on top of the head pan to verify the clips are assembled correctly. The sight holes allow visual confirmation that the clips are properly seated.
No. The M5 Head & Center Section (parts 30892 & 30894) are sold without legs. The M5 ISR 27K Legs (part 30927) must be purchased separately.
The M5 ISR 27K Legs require part 30153 above-bed rails, which must be installed on your truck before the hitch can be mounted.
You need: M13 wrench, M24 socket and wrench, torque wrench, and a grease needle. A 7/16-inch socket is needed for spring adjustment, and a grease gun with needle adapter is recommended for maintenance.
The M16 hex-head bolts connecting the legs to the center section must be torqued to 220 ft-lbs. This must be checked every 1,000 miles.
The M5 Head & Center Section is rated for 27,000 lbs towing capacity with a maximum pin weight of 6,750 lbs. Do not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
A minimum of 6 inches of clearance is required between the truck bed rail and the bottom of the trailer. The legs have 4 inches of vertical adjustment to help achieve this.
The jaw may not close if it is under compression from the trailer weight. Pull the truck slowly forward to remove the load on the jaw. The handle will then fully latch. This is normal behavior and does not indicate a problem.
If the trailer separates during the pull test, the hitch is not properly latched. Repeat the hitching procedure from the beginning. Ensure the head is in Ready-to-Receive position before backing into the trailer, and back completely into the trailer king pin until the indicator shows 100% GREEN before performing the pull test again.
The pivot assembly resistance is preset at the factory but may need adjustment. Tighten the pivot bolt 1/2 turn at a time (maximum 2 full turns) to increase resistance and reduce noise. The pivot bolt and nut are accessible with an open-end wrench through the access point shown in the manual.
Verify that the hitch is tight to the truck by lifting each side. If movement is detected, check that all M16 hex-head bolts connecting the legs to the center section are torqued to 220 ft-lbs. Also verify that the pins and spring clips are undamaged and secure. Retorque bolts if necessary.
