Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. The products suit RV owners, horse and livestock haulers and anyone towing near the upper end of a vehicle's rating.

On The Ball | REESE M5 fifth wheel hitch
Part number 30917. The kit includes one left-hand leg, one right-hand leg, 4 M16x2x40mm bolts, 4 conical washers, 4 handle T-pin locks, 4 lynch pin handle locks, 4 castle nuts, 8 M5 lynch pins, 2 front T-pins, 2 rear T-pins, and 4 T-bushings.
The M5 RAM LEGS are designed specifically for installation with the M5 Head and M5 Center Section (both sold separately). The hitch system is rated for 27,000 lbs with a maximum pin weight of 6,750 lbs. Refer to the M5 Head and Center Section instructions for vehicle compatibility details.
A minimum of 6 inches clearance is required between the truck bed rail and the bottom of the trailer. The legs have 4 inches of vertical adjustment to achieve this clearance by selecting the appropriate center section mounting holes.
Required tools: M24 wrenches, pliers, and a torque wrench. An M13 wrench is also needed for the handle assembly on the head unit.
Each M16 center section hex-head bolt must be tightened to 220 ft-lb of torque. Bolts should be finger-tightened initially until final adjustments are made, then torqued to specification after all positioning is complete.
Yes. There is a left-hand leg and a right-hand leg. Each leg must be placed correctly on the center section with the small T-Pin/T-Bushing in the front on both sides and the large T-Pin/T-Bushing at the rear.
The M16 bolts should be finger-tightened initially until final adjustments are made. They are then tightened to 220 ft-lb of torque only after the legs are positioned correctly and the lynch pins are secured.
The hitch is rated for 27,000 lbs with a maximum pin weight of 6,750 lbs. Do not exceed the towing vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity or the lowest rated component of your system.
Every 1,000 miles, check the M16 hex bolts that connect the center section to the legs to ensure they are still torqued to 220 ft-lb.
The kit includes: 1 left-hand leg, 1 right-hand leg, 4 M16x2x40mm CL10.9 bolts, 4 conical washers (5/8"), 4 handle T-pin locks, 4 lynch pin handle locks, 4 castle nuts, 8 M5 lynch pins, 2 front T-pins, 2 rear T-pins, and 4 T-bushings. Additional cotter pins are provided for convenience.
No. The M5 RAM LEGS are designed exclusively for use with the M5 Head and M5 Center Section. They are not compatible with other hitch brands or models.
The M5 RAM LEGS provide 4 inches of vertical adjustment. This is achieved by selecting different center section mounting holes to ensure the minimum 6-inch clearance between the truck bed rail and the trailer bottom is maintained.
The small T-Pin/T-Bushing is the front mounting location, and the large T-Pin/T-Bushing is for the rear. Both must be placed correctly on the center section, with the small T-Pin/T-Bushing in the front on both sides.
The legs are attached using 4 M16x2x40mm hex-head bolts and conical washers. The bolts are threaded from the inside of the center section into the threaded portion of the legs. Bolts should be finger-tightened initially, then torqued to 220 ft-lb after final adjustments are made.
During assembly, the collars on each leg must be fully inserted into the corresponding holes in the center section. This ensures proper alignment and seating of the leg assembly before the bolts are tightened.
Remove the 4 lynch pins and position the legs over the pucks with the handles in the OPEN position. Once the unit is placed in the pucks, rotate the handles back to the CLOSED position and reinsert the lynch pins to prevent the handles from opening during operation.
If a handle is loose and rattles or cannot be closed fully, remove the lynch pin and adjust the castle nut by hand to a position where the handle does not rattle or is able to close. Once the adjustment is satisfactory, reinsert the lynch pin and close the loop over the castle nut to hold it in place.
The M16 bolts should be finger-tightened initially during assembly. They are torqued to 220 ft-lb only after the legs are positioned correctly, the handles are adjusted, and the lynch pins are securely locked in place.
After tightening each M16 center section hex-head bolt to 220 ft-lb of torque, verify that the hitch is tight to the truck bed by lifting each side of the hitch. If there is movement, the bolts may not be properly torqued.
The lynch pin should be in the properly closed position with the loop over the castle nut. Do not reverse the loop to the other side of the pin. The image in the maintenance section shows the proper orientation of the lynch pin in relation to the foot bracket.
Under no circumstances should you exceed the towing vehicle manufacturer's recommended vehicle towing capacity or the lowest rated component of your system. Failure to follow installation and hitch-up instructions may cause property loss, serious injury, or death.
Before any trip, verify that the lynch pins, foot bracket, and castle nut are undamaged and securely locked. Additionally ensure that the lynch pins are securely locked in place with little to no vertical play.
Every 1,000 miles, check the M16 hex bolts that connect the center section to the legs to ensure they are still torqued to 220 ft-lb of torque.
For general maintenance of the entire 5th wheel hitch assembly, refer to the M5 Head and Center Section instruction sheet, which is sold separately.
No. The M5 Head and M5 Center Section are sold separately. The M5 RAM LEGS are designed to work with these components, which must be purchased separately.
Both legs must be mounted at the same vertical height on the center section to ensure the hitch is level and balanced. This is achieved by using the same center section mounting holes on both the left and right sides of the unit.
The bolts are M16x2x40mm, Class 10.9 (CL10.9). There are 4 bolts in the kit, and each must be torqued to 220 ft-lb. Conical washers (5/8") are used with each bolt.
The castle nut is used to adjust the tightness of the handle on each leg. If a handle is too loose or too tight, the castle nut can be adjusted by hand to achieve the correct tension so the handle does not rattle and can be properly closed and locked.
Due to variations in truck underbeds, it is normal for some handles to be loose and rattle. To fix this, remove the lynch pin and adjust the castle nut by hand to a position where the handle does not rattle. Once the adjustment is satisfactory, reinsert the lynch pin and close the loop over the castle nut to hold it in place.
If a handle cannot be closed fully, remove the lynch pin and adjust the castle nut by hand to a position where the handle is able to close. This is a normal adjustment due to variations in truck underbeds. Once the adjustment is satisfactory, reinsert the lynch pin and close the loop over the castle nut.
If the hitch moves when you lift each side, the M16 bolts connecting the center section to the legs may not be properly torqued. Verify that each bolt is torqued to 220 ft-lb of torque. If bolts are loose, tighten them to the correct specification.
If the M16 hex bolts are not torqued to 220 ft-lb during the 1,000-mile check, use a torque wrench to tighten them to the correct specification. Bolts may loosen over time due to vibration and use, so regular checking and retorquing is important for safe operation.
