Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. Reese® 5th Wheel Hitch Features & Benefits
The Reese 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch is designed for use with recreational fifth wheel trailers only, equipped with a SAE 2-inch kingpin. Hitch applications other than recreational fifth wheel trailers must be approved in writing by Reese's Engineering Department. The hitch is rated for a maximum gross trailer weight of 16,000 pounds.
The Reese 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch is designed for light trucks such as the Ford F-Series, Chevy Silverado, and Dodge Ram. Reese recommends the use of long bed (8 ft) light trucks for the best combination of truck-trailer turning clearance. Short bed pickups (6–8 ft) may be used with an extended pin box trailer and/or a Reese Kwik-Slide (part 30048) for increased turning clearance. Do not install this hitch on a pickup truck with a bed shorter than 6 ft.
You can use the hitch on a short bed pickup truck that is longer than 6 ft but shorter than 8 ft, provided the trailer is equipped with an extended pin box to gain additional truck-trailer turning clearance. Reese recommends a minimum 13-inch pin box extension. You may also add a Reese Kwik-Slide (part 30048) for increased turning clearance during low-speed, non-highway maneuvering. Do not install this hitch on a pickup truck with a bed shorter than 6 ft.
The maximum gross trailer weight is 16,000 pounds. The towing vehicle must have a manufacturer's rated towing capacity equal to or greater than the gross trailer weight (dry weight of the trailer plus payload). Trailer and its contents together must not exceed the truck, hitch, and/or trailer tow ratings.
The maximum king pin weight is 4,000 pounds. Approximately 15–25% of the gross trailer weight should be on the hitch (pin weight). If in doubt, have the king pin weight measured by a qualified facility.
The hitch height can be adjusted from 13 inches (lowest position) to 17 inches (highest position) by selecting the appropriate hole on the head support (part 27) when installing the four 1/2-13 x 4.5-inch hex bolts. The height of the hitch and pin box should be adjusted so the trailer is approximately level as it is towed.
Using trailer jacks, adjust the trailer height so that the bottom of the trailer pin box is 0.5 to 1 inch below the hitch skid plate. During the hitching maneuver, the bottom of the trailer pin box should come into contact with the skid plate ramp. If the pin box is above the hitch skid plate, the king pin may come to rest on top of the closed jaws instead of inside them, which could result in trailer separation.
The hitch assembly kit includes: long pull pins (4), spring retaining pins (4), left and right jaws, pins (2), retainer rings (6), actuating handle (1), latch (1), 3/8-inch bolt (1), 3/8-inch flat washer (1), 3/8-inch lock nut (1), springs (2), head assembly (1), head support (1), side brackets (2), pivot beam (1), pivot pin (1), klik-pin (1), four 1/2-13 x 4.5-inch hex bolts (4), 1/2-inch lock nuts (4), cotter pin (1), tubular handle (1), handle grip (1), and rubber stoppers (2). Base rails, brackets, and additional hardware are in a separate kit (part 30035) with separate installation instructions.
Torque the 1/2-inch nuts to 75 lb-ft. This applies to the four 1/2-13 x 4.5-inch hex bolts (part 32) that secure the head support to the legs.
Before each trip, lubricate the skid plate surface of the hitch with automotive-type chassis grease or use a plastic lube plate (Reese part 74295) to provide a lubricated surface. Use engine oil to lubricate the pivot points of moving parts within the hitch. If using a plastic lube plate, it must not exceed 3/16 inch in thickness to ensure the hitch operates properly, and must be 10 inches in diameter or larger to properly distribute king pin weight.
Before each trip or maneuver, perform the following checks: (1) Lubricate the skid plate surface with automotive chassis grease or a plastic lube plate (not exceeding 3/16 inch thick, 10 inches or larger in diameter). (2) Use engine oil to lubricate pivot points of moving parts. (3) Operate the handle and check that the jaws open and close freely. (4) Verify that all hitch pull pins (part 11) are in place and the spring retaining pins (part 12) are installed.
Follow these steps in order: (1) Place blocks firmly against the front and rear of each trailer wheel. Lower the tailgate if necessary. (2) Adjust trailer height so the pin box bottom is 0.5–1 inch below the skid plate. (3) Rotate the latch toward the trailer and free of the groove in the handle. (4) With the handle in the closed position, back the truck slowly into the trailer. As the king pin enters the hitch, it will push the jaws open and extend the handle. As the king pin completely enters the head, the jaws will spring closed and the handle will return to the closed position. (5) Visually check that the bottom of the pin box is resting on top of the hitch with no space between these surfaces. (6) Rotate the latch to the closed position in the groove of the handle. (7) Connect the electrical cable and breakaway switch cable, then raise the tailgate. (8) Perform the pull test before removing wheel blocks.
If the handle does not pull out completely, there is probably pressure against the jaws. To relieve this pressure, back the truck slightly. Reset the truck emergency brake. Then pull the hitch handle out completely until it latches in the open position. Once the handle is fully extended, the king pin is no longer securely grasped by the hitch jaws and the trailer is free from the hitch and truck.
Follow these steps in order: (1) Place blocks firmly against the front and rear of each trailer wheel. (2) Using trailer jacks, lower the landing gear until the feet rest on firm ground. (3) Make sure the truck is in park with the emergency brake on. (4) Lower the truck tailgate. (5) Disconnect the power cable and breakaway switch cable. (6) Rotate the latch toward the trailer and free of the groove in the handle. (7) Pull the hitch handle out completely until it latches in the open position. If the handle is hard to move, back the truck slightly to relieve pressure. (8) After making certain no one is standing between the truck and trailer or in front of the truck, drive the truck slowly away from the trailer. (9) Close the hitch jaws by pushing the handle forward and up. (10) Keep wheel blocks in place to prevent the trailer from moving unexpectedly.
The pull test verifies that the trailer is properly hitched before towing. With all trailer wheels firmly blocked, landing gear resting on firm ground and supporting trailer weight, and the truck stationary with the emergency brake on: (1) Release the truck's emergency brake. (2) Apply the trailer brakes. (3) After making sure no one is between the truck and trailer, try to pull the trailer slowly forward with the truck. If the trailer is properly hitched, the wheel blocks and trailer brakes should keep the truck from moving forward. If the trailer is not properly hitched, the trailer will separate from the hitch and the truck will move forward, leaving the trailer behind. Failure to perform this test may result in death or serious injury.
All of the following conditions must be met: (1) All trailer tires must be blocked in front and behind each tire. (2) Trailer landing gear must be resting on firm ground. (3) Truck must be stationary, in park, with the emergency brake on. Whenever possible, avoid putting your body under the trailer or between the truck and trailer.
Do not attempt to hitch by using trailer jacks to lower the trailer and king pin. This could result in the king pin coming to rest on top of the skid plate instead of within the hitch opening where the jaws are located. The king pin could slide off the hitch and the trailer could drop, resulting in death or serious injury.
Do not use this hitch for towing a trailer with a pin box that could come into contact with or interfere with the latch for the hitch handle when turning. If the pin box contacts the hitch handle or its latch when turning, the trailer may become unhitched.
Base rails must be bolted through the floor of the pickup to the brackets that attach to the truck frame. Do not install by fastening to the floor of the pickup box only. The floor alone is not strong enough to carry the loads imposed by the trailer. The base rail kit (part 30035) includes separate installation instructions for mounting the base rails and brackets.
Recheck the tightness of all hardware every 1,000 miles of use. Before each trip, perform the checks listed in the 'Before Each Trip' section: lubricate the skid plate with chassis grease or a plastic lube plate, use engine oil on pivot points, operate the handle to check that jaws open and close freely, and verify that all pull pins and spring retaining pins are in place.
The Reese Fifth Wheel Slider is designed to be used with Cequent Performance Products, Inc. fifth wheel installations only. It provides additional turning clearance for low-speed, off-highway maneuvering such as backing a fifth wheel trailer into a tight campsite by sliding the hitch 10 inches rearward from its normal towing position to a maneuvering position. This places the trailer king pin behind the rear truck axle. The slider is rated at 20,000 lbs gross trailer weight and 5,000 lbs vertical pin weight, but must not exceed the towing vehicle manufacturer's towing rating or the rating of the fifth wheel hitch being used.
The Reese Fifth Wheel Slider is designed for use with long bed (8 foot) trucks, which provide ample turning clearance between the truck cab and trailer front. Short bed trucks (less than 8 ft) require additional turning clearance to avoid truck cab or trailer damage during normal turns. Cequent Performance Products recommends the use of a minimum 13-inch pin box extension for short bed trucks to comfortably make normal turning maneuvers. The slider positions the hitch 10 inches rearward but does not guarantee clearance between the truck cab and the trailer.
Before installing the Reese Fifth Wheel Slider, the leaf spring must be greased using white lithium grease or equivalent. For best results, use aerosol white lithium grease with a spray nozzle extension. Make sure the entire underside of the spring is coated. Repeat this application monthly during use. Additionally, coat the top surface of the slide tube and roller holes in each slider assembly with all-purpose grease or Teflon lube as needed, repeating this application monthly during use.
Torque the 1/2-inch bolts to 85 lb-ft.
Rails should be installed so that the center lines of each rail are 21 15/16 inches apart. The diagonal dimensions (labeled 'x' and 'y') should be within 0.1 inch (1/8 inch) of each other. If this alignment is not met, loosen the hardware and realign the base rails. Re-torque the hardware per base rail instructions after the base rails are properly aligned. Due to the heavy-duty nature of the slider assembly, it may not slide by hand when installed, especially if base rails are not parallel and centered.
Never tow trailers on the highway or at high-speed conditions with the slider in the maneuvering position (rearward of the rear axle). The maneuvering position should only be used at low speed when high maneuverability is needed, such as backing into a tight campsite. Towing with the trailer king pin rearward of the rear truck axle can affect weight distribution and may interfere with the towing vehicle's handling and response characteristics, which could result in death or serious injury.
Follow these steps: (1) Position the truck and trailer in a straight line on a flat, level area. (2) Place the truck in park with the emergency brake on. (3) Remove the lock pin from the towing hole and pull the handle forward. If the handle is hard to move, it may be wedged into the latching hole in the slider tube; slightly move the truck back or forth until the handle moves freely. (4) The indicator pin should be over the red unlocked range, near the green maneuvering range. Spring pressure will press the latch against the top of the tube. (5) Return to the truck, release the emergency brake, manually engage the trailer brake, and pull the truck forward until the slider stops and the latches engage in the maneuvering position. (6) Perform a push test: manually engage the trailer brakes, back the truck into the trailer, and verify the slider does not move. If it does move, the latch has not engaged; repeat the steps. (7) Install the lock pin completely in the maneuvering hole. (8) Verify the indicator pin is now over the green range on the left side of the warning label.

(6) Perform a pull test: manually engage the trailer brakes, pull the truck ahead, and verify the slider does not move. If it does move, the latch has not engaged; repeat the steps. (7) Install the lock pin completely in the towing hole. (8) Verify the indicator pin is now over the green range on the right side of the warning label. If the indicator pin is over the red range, the latch has not engaged; do not tow and repeat the steps.
Never place any part of your body in the truck bed or between the truck and the trailer unless each and every one of the following conditions are met: (1) The truck is in park with the emergency brake on, and (2) All trailer wheels are blocked on each side of the wheel. Additionally, always perform a push test or pull test by following the instructions in the manual. Slide hitches that are not properly locked can suddenly move and kill you.
The kit includes: passenger side slide assembly (1), driver side slide assembly (1), bent handle (1), cotter pins 1/4 x 1-1/2 inch (3), warning label (1), indicator pin 1/4 x 2 inch (1), slider tubes (2), handle grip (1), straight handle (1), and roll pin 1/4 x 1 inch (1).

Torque the 1/2-inch nuts on the head support bolts to 75 lb-ft. For the Reese Fifth Wheel Slider (part 50024), torque 1/2-inch bolts to 85 lb-ft.
Perform the pull test: with wheels blocked and landing gear down, apply trailer brakes and try to pull the trailer forward slowly. If the trailer is properly hitched, the truck should not move. If the trailer separates, it is not properly hitched; do not tow. Also verify the latch is closed in the handle groove and there is no space between the pin box and hitch skid plate.
Lubricate the skid plate with chassis grease or a plastic lube plate before each trip. Use engine oil on pivot points. Operate the handle to verify jaws open and close freely. Check that all pull pins and spring retaining pins are in place. Recheck tightness of all hardware every 1,000 miles.
Only at low speed for off-highway maneuvering, such as backing into a campsite. Never tow on the highway or at high speed with the slider in the maneuvering position (rearward of the rear axle), as this affects weight distribution and vehicle handling.

The trailer was not properly hitched. Possible causes: (1) The king pin is too high and resting on top of the closed jaws instead of inside them. (2) The latch is not aligned with the groove in the handle. (3) The pin box bottom is not resting on the hitch skid plate. Repeat the hitching steps until the trailer is properly hitched. Do not tow.
The handle may be wedged into the latching hole in the slider tube. Slightly move the truck back or forth until the handle moves freely. Then repeat the positioning steps.
The latch has not engaged the tubes. Perform the push test (for maneuvering position) or pull test (for towing position) to verify. If the slider moves, the latch has not engaged. Repeat the positioning steps until the latch engages the tubes. Do not tow.
The slider is not properly locked in the desired position. If the indicator pin is over the red range on the warning label, the latch has not engaged the tubes. Repeat the positioning steps (move to maneuvering or move to towing position) until the indicator pin is over the green range on the appropriate side of the warning label. Do not tow.
