Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. The products suit RV owners, horse and livestock haulers and anyone towing near the upper end of a vehicle's rating.

Yes. The M5 MY20 GM Leg is designed to work with the M5 Head & Center Section. The leg attaches to the center section using four M16 bolts, and the head mounts on top of the center section. All three components are sold separately.
The hitch is rated for 20,000 lbs total capacity with a maximum pin weight of 5,000 lbs. Do not exceed your towing vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
For the head and center section: M13 wrench. For the leg installation: M24 wrench, pliers, and a torque wrench. A grease gun with needle adapter is also required for maintenance.
Yes. You must maintain a minimum of 6 inches of clearance between the truck bed rail and the bottom of the trailer. The M5 MY20 GM Leg has 4 inches of vertical adjustment to help achieve this. Select the appropriate center section mounting holes during installation.
Each M16 hex-head bolt must be torqued to 220 ft-lbs. Finger-tighten initially, then apply final torque after all adjustments are made and the unit is positioned in the truck bed pucks.
Yes. The M5 MY20 GM Leg comes pre-assembled, adjusted, and ready to install. You only need to attach it to the center section using the four M16 bolts and position it in the truck bed pucks.
Every 1,000 miles, check the M16 hex bolts that connect the center section to the legs to ensure they are still torqued to 220 ft-lbs.
Before hitching: lower the truck tailgate if necessary, place blocks/chocks firmly against trailer wheels to prevent motion, verify the pin box is at correct height (bottom of pin box aligned with top of skid plate ramp ±1 inch), and ensure the head is in Ready-to-Receive position (handle pulled out, indicator shows RED).
The package includes: one assembly head unit, one handle, two ½" pull pins, two spring clips, two M8 carriage bolts, two M8 lock washers, two M8 nuts, and one center section assembly. Four bolts and washers are supplied with the leg unit (sold separately). The head and center section are sold as a pair (parts 30892 & 30884).
The M5 MY20 GM Leg (part 30937) includes: one leg assembly, four M16 x 2 x 40mm CL10.9 bolts, four 5/8" conical washers, four T-pin locking handles, six lynch pin handle locks, four castle nuts (M5 Ford), four T-pins (Ford M5), and four T-bushings (Ford M5).
Slide the tube over the bar as shown in the manual, then securely tighten it with the carriage bolts, lock washers, and nuts using an M13 wrench. The handle should be snug when fully tightened.
1. Apply grease to the pivot assemblies (see maintenance section). 2. Place the head unit on top of the center section, avoiding pinch points. 3. Insert the pull pin as shown in the manual on both sides. 4. Secure each pull pin with a spring clip. 5. Inspect through the sight holes on top of the head pan to confirm the clips are assembled correctly.
Using four M16 x 2 x 40mm hex head bolts, attach the legs to the center section structure by threading the bolts from the inside of the center section into the threaded portion of the legs. Finger-tighten the bolts initially until final adjustments are made. Ensure the collars on the leg are completely seated in the corresponding holes in the center section before final tightening.
1. Remove the two lynch pins. 2. Position the legs over the pucks in the truck bed with handles in the OPEN position. 3. Once the unit is placed in the pucks, rotate the handles back to the CLOSED position. 4. Insert the lynch pins back into the leg to prevent handles from opening during operation.
Due to variations in truck underbeds, some handles may be loose and rattle, or too tight to close. If a handle is too loose and rattles or cannot close fully, remove the lynch pin and adjust the castle nut by hand to a position where the handle does not rattle and can close properly. Only finger-tighten the castle nut. Once adjustment is satisfactory, re-insert the lynch pin and close it properly.
After tightening all M16 bolts to 220 ft-lbs and securing the lynch pins, verify that the hitch is tight to the truck bed by lifting each side of the hitch. There should be minimal or no movement.
The manual does not specify a torque value for the M8 carriage bolts used in the handle assembly. It states the handle should be "securely tightened" and "snug" using an M13 wrench, but no ft-lbs specification is provided.
Apply grease to the following: (A) the skid plate surface to provide a lubricated surface for trailer attachment; (B) the 5th wheel jaw and/or kingpin on the trailer; (C) via the grease fitting on top of the unit using a grease needle (the head comes pre-greased); and (D) spray white lithium grease on internal mechanisms and rotate the handle a few times to distribute. Plastic lube plates up to 3/16" thick can be used instead of grease on the skid plate. REESE 5th Wheel Lube Plate #83001 is recommended.
Use a grease gun with a needle adapter installed. The grease fitting is accessible through the logo/load rating slot on top of the unit. A typical grease needle is generally available at auto parts stores. Apply grease prior to installing the head unit and as needed during maintenance.
The pivot assembly resistance is preset at the factory. If noise is noticed, investigate the cause and check grease points first. If the head pivots and makes noise when the trailer is not attached, adjust the resistance by tightening the pivot bolt 1/2 turn at a time. Do not exceed 2 full turns maximum. Access the pivot bolt and nut through the open end wrench access point shown in the manual.
Yes. The pivot assembly can be rebuilt if required. Instructions to do this will be included in the rebuild kit, which is sold separately.
RED indicator: The head is in Ready-to-Receive position (when delivered, when hitch not in use, when coupling to trailer, or after uncoupling) or in Unhitching position. GREEN indicator: The head is in Locked position (when coupled to trailer). The indicator shows GREEN only when the head is fully locked and the handle holes align for bail pin insertion.
The head is in Ready-to-Receive position when: (1) the handle is pulled out so the holes do not align for the bail pin, (2) the handle is easily movable towards the cab and returns to the default position when released, and (3) the indicator shows RED.
The head is in Locked position when: (1) the handle is in a position where the holes align for bail pin insertion, and (2) the indicator ONLY shows GREEN. This position occurs when the trailer is coupled to the hitch.
The bottom of the pin box should be aligned with the top of the skid plate ramp ±1 inch. This is the contact zone for proper hitching. Refer to the leg installation instructions for information on how to properly set the height of the 5th wheel hitch.
The pull test is performed after backing the truck into the trailer to verify proper hitching. With trailer wheels firmly blocked, landing gears on the ground supporting trailer weight, and trailer brake on, ensure no one is between the truck and trailer. Try to pull the trailer slowly forward. If properly hitched, the trailer will not separate. If not properly hitched, the trailer will separate and the truck will move forward—repeat the hitching steps. Perform the pull test before inserting the bail pin.
If the jaw does not close when fully backed into the trailer, it may be under compression. Pull the truck slowly forward to remove the load on the jaw. The handle will then fully latch.
After the pull test confirms proper hitching and the indicator shows completely green, insert the bail pin into the lock hole as shown in the manual (figure 15). The bail pin secures the head in the locked position.
After inserting the bail pin: (1) Connect the electrical cable between truck and trailer, (2) Connect the breakaway switch cable between truck and trailer, (3) Raise the truck tailgate if necessary, (4) Remove chocks/blocks from the trailer wheels, and (5) Lift the trailer jacks.
Before unhitching: (1) Ensure blocks/chocks are firmly against each trailer wheel to prevent forward or rearward motion, (2) Lower and firmly position trailer jacks on the ground, (3) Lower the truck tailgate if necessary, and (4) Disconnect the electrical cable and breakaway switch cable between truck and trailer.
1. Remove the bail pin. 2. Move the handle to the unhitching position by pulling it out and rotating it towards the cab. 3. Drive the truck slowly away from the trailer. If there is tension between truck and trailer, the truck or trailer may shift when the handle is pulled, but the trailer will still uncouple.
Yes. The center section can be rotated 180 degrees to increase the gap between the trailer front and truck cab by 1-1/2". This involves removing the head, removing the bolts holding the legs to the center section, rotating the center section (or center section and leg assembly on non-RAM vehicles), and re-installing the components. The head springs must also be flipped from right to left and tightened to 7-8 ft-lbs. Detailed instructions are provided on page 7 of the manual.
1. Remove the head by pulling the spring clips off the head retainer pins and pulling the retainer pins out. 2. Lift the head off and set aside. 3. Remove the bolts holding the legs to the center section and rotate the center section (all vehicles), OR disconnect the feet from the bed and rotate the center section and leg assembly (not possible with RAM vehicles). 4. Reconnect the center section or center section and leg assembly per their installation instructions. 5. Remove the logo/rating cover by gently prying the two lower plastic retainers with plastic auto trim tools. 6. Re-install on the other side by reversing the process. 7. Remove the head springs by removing the 1/4" bolt (7/16" socket) and flip them from right to left. Tighten to 7-8 ft-lbs. 8. Re-apply grease and re-install the head. 9. Re-install head retainer pins and clips.
When installing the head springs during the cab clearance adjustment procedure, tighten them to 7-8 ft-lbs. The springs should be pointing up towards the truck cab and should flex freely when properly installed.
Before any trip, verify that: (1) all lynch pins are undamaged and securely locked, (2) the foot bracket is undamaged and securely locked, (3) the castle nut is undamaged and securely locked, and (4) there is little to no vertical play in the assembly. The lynch pin should be in the proper closed position relative to the foot.
Yes. The head comes pre-greased. However, you should apply additional grease to the skid plate surface, the 5th wheel jaw and/or kingpin on the trailer, and via the grease fitting on top of the unit before initial use and as needed during maintenance.
Plastic lube plates can be used on the skid plate to avoid messy grease. The plate must not exceed 3/16" in thickness to ensure the hitch works properly. REESE 5th Wheel Lube Plate #83001 is recommended.
Yes. You may need to wipe down the unit to remove large debris before applying spray-on white lithium grease to internal mechanisms.

The pivot assembly resistance is preset at the factory. If the head pivots and makes noise when the trailer is not attached, adjust the resistance by tightening the pivot bolt 1/2 turn at a time. Do not exceed 2 full turns maximum. Access the pivot bolt and nut through the open end wrench access point. If noise persists, investigate other grease points as the obvious starting point.
Remove the lynch pin from the affected leg. Adjust the castle nut by hand to a position where the handle does not rattle and can close fully. Only finger-tighten the castle nut; do not use a wrench. Once adjustment is satisfactory, re-insert the lynch pin and close it properly.
Remove the lynch pin from the affected leg. Adjust the castle nut by hand to a position where the handle can close fully. Only finger-tighten the castle nut; do not use a wrench. Once adjustment is satisfactory, re-insert the lynch pin and close it properly. This is normal due to variations in truck underbeds.
If the jaw does not close when fully backed into the trailer, it may be under compression. Pull the truck slowly forward to remove the load on the jaw. The handle will then fully latch. Once latched, back into the trailer again to complete the coupling.
If the trailer separates from the hitch during the pull test, the trailer is not properly hitched. Repeat the hitching procedure from the beginning: ensure the truck and trailer are in position, verify the pin box is at correct height, make sure the head is in Ready-to-Receive position, and back the truck slowly into the trailer until the indicator turns completely green. Then perform the pull test again.
Verify that the hitch is tight to the truck bed by lifting each side of the hitch. If there is movement, check that: (1) all M16 hex-head bolts are torqued to 220 ft-lbs, (2) all lynch pins are securely locked in the CLOSED position, (3) all castle nuts are securely locked, and (4) the leg collars are completely seated in the center section holes. Re-torque any loose bolts to 220 ft-lbs.
