Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. The products suit RV owners, horse and livestock haulers and anyone towing near the upper end of a vehicle's rating.

Yes, the Reese M5 Fifth Wheel Hitch 27,000 lbs. Capacity, GM (Part #RE30939) is designed to fit the 2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD.
The Reese M5 Fifth Wheel Hitch 27,000 lbs. Capacity, GM (Part #RE30939) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The M5 Head & Center Section is rated for 27,000 lbs total capacity with a maximum pin weight of 6,750 lbs.
Yes. The M5 Head & Center Section (parts 30892 and 30894) are sold without legs. M5 mounting legs, such as the M5 MY20 GM Leg (part 30937), are sold separately and must be purchased for installation.
Required tools include M13 and M24 sockets and wrenches, a torque wrench, and a lithium grease applicator (grease needle). Fastener kit 30892F is also required.
A minimum of 6 inches of clearance is required between the truck bed rail and the bottom of the trailer. The M5 center section has 4 inches of overall vertical adjustment to achieve this clearance.
Each M16 hex-head bolt connecting the legs to the center section must be tightened to 220 ft-lbs of torque.
Every 1,000 miles, check the M16 hex bolts to ensure they are still torqued to 220 ft-lbs.
Before hitching, ensure the 5th wheel height is correct, the truck and trailer are in position to couple, the truck tailgate is lowered if necessary, blocks/chocks are firmly against each trailer wheel, the pin box is at correct height, and the head is in Ready-to-Receive position.
The kit includes: one assembly head unit, one handle, two ½" pull pins, two spring clips, two M8 carriage bolts with lock washers and nuts, one center section (30894), and four bolts and washers. Leg assembly fasteners are supplied separately with the leg unit. Fastener kit 30892F is required for installation.
The maximum pin weight is 6,750 lbs. Do not exceed this weight or the towing vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
Yes. The M5 MY20 GM Leg (part 30937) is designed for installation with the M5 Head and Center Section (parts 30892 and 30894). The leg comes pre-assembled, adjusted, and ready to install.
Slide the tube over the bar and securely tighten with carriage bolts, lock washers, and nuts using an M13 wrench. The handle should be snug.
1. Apply grease to the interface per the maintenance section. 2. Place the head unit on top of the center section, avoiding pinch points. 3. Insert the pull pin as shown in the instructions and secure with spring clips on both sides. 4. Inspect through the sight holes on top of the head pan to confirm clips are assembled correctly.
The center section has three possible attachment locations on the legs to allow for height adjustment. These locations provide 4 inches of overall vertical adjustment to ensure a minimum of 6 inches of clearance between the truck bed rail and the bottom of the trailer.
Before each use, apply grease to the skid plate surface to provide a lubricated surface for trailer attachment. Also apply grease to the 5th wheel jaw and/or kingpin on the trailer. Plastic lube plates (not exceeding 3/16" thickness) can be used to avoid messy grease; REESE 5th Wheel Lube Plate #83001 is recommended.
Annually or as required: 1. Apply grease via the grease fitting on top of the unit using a grease needle. 2. Apply spray-on white lithium grease to internal mechanisms and rotate the handle a few times to distribute. 3. Use a grease gun with needle adapter to grease the pivot assemblies. 4. If the head pivots and makes noise when the trailer is not attached, tighten the pivot bolt 1/2 turn at a time (maximum 2 full turns). The pivot assembly can be rebuilt using a rebuild kit if required.
The grease fitting is located on the top of the unit and is accessible through the logo/load rating slot. A grease needle is required to apply grease to this fitting.
Plastic lube plates must not exceed 3/16" in thickness to ensure the hitch works properly. REESE 5th Wheel Lube Plate #83001 is recommended.
The M5 head has three positions: Ready-to-Receive (handle pulled out, holes do not align for bail pin, indicator shows RED, used when delivered, not in use, or coupling to trailer), Locked Position (handle aligned for bail pin insertion, indicator shows GREEN, used when coupled to trailer), and Unhitching Position (handle in specific position shown in instructions, indicator shows RED, used when unhitching the trailer).
The head is in Ready-to-Receive position when: the handle is pulled out so holes do not align for the bail pin, the handle is easily movable towards the cab and returns to default position upon release, and the indicator shows RED.
The head is in Locked position when the handle is in a position that allows holes to align for bail pin insertion and the indicator shows GREEN only.
Before hitching, verify: 1. The 5th wheel height is correct. 2. The truck and trailer are in position to couple. 3. The truck tailgate is lowered if necessary. 4. Blocks/chocks are firmly against each trailer wheel to prevent forward or rearward motion. 5. The pin box is at correct height for hitching. 6. The head is in Ready-to-Receive position.
The bottom of the pin box should be aligned with the top of the skid plate ramp, with a tolerance of +/- 1 inch.
After the hitch latches automatically and the indicator shows 100% green: 1. Ensure trailer wheels are firmly blocked, landing gears are firmly on the ground supporting trailer weight, and trailer brake is on. 2. Make sure no one is between the truck and trailer. 3. Try to pull the trailer slowly forward. If properly hitched, the trailer will not separate. If not properly hitched, the trailer will separate and the truck will move forward—repeat the hitching steps.
After confirming the trailer is properly hitched: 1. Insert the bail pin into the lock hole or use a lock for added security. 2. Connect the electrical cable and breakaway switch cable between truck and trailer. 3. Raise the tailgate if necessary. 4. Remove chocks/blocks and lift trailer jacks.
Before unhitching: 1. Ensure the trailer is secure with blocks/chocks firmly against each trailer wheel and jacks lowered and firmly on the ground. 2. Lower the tailgate as necessary and disconnect electrical and breakaway switch cables. 3. Ensure no person or vehicle is in the vicinity of the truck or trailer, as they may shift when unhitching.
1. Remove the bail pin from the locking hole. 2. Move the handle to the unhitching position by pulling out and rotating it towards the cab. 3. Drive the truck slowly away from the trailer. Note: If there is tension between truck and trailer, the truck or trailer may shift when the handle is pulled. The handle will start to return to ready-to-receive position, but the trailer will still uncouple.
Yes. The center section can be rotated 180 degrees to increase the gap between the trailer front and truck cab by 1-1/2 inches. This requires removing the head unit, unbolting the legs from the center section, rotating the center section, and reinstalling all components. The location of the king pin should remain ahead of the truck rear axle with proper truck cab clearance.
1. Remove the head by pulling spring clips off the head retainer pins and pulling out the retainer pin. 2. Lift the head off and set aside. 3. Remove the bolts holding the legs on the center section and rotate the center section (or disconnect feet and rotate the center section and leg assembly, not possible with RAM vehicles). 4. Reconnect per leg installation instructions. 5. Remove the logo/rating cover by gently prying the two lower plastic retainers. 6. Reinstall on the other side by reversing the process. 7. Remove the head springs by removing the 1/4" bolt (7/16" socket) and flip them from right to left; tighten to 7-8 ft-lbs. 8. Reapply grease and reinstall the head. 9. Reinstall head retainer pins and clips.
When reinstalling the head springs after rotating the center section, tighten them to 7-8 ft-lbs. The springs should be pointing up towards the truck cab and will flex freely when properly installed.
A 7/16" socket is needed to remove the 1/4" bolt that holds the head springs.
The M5 MY20 GM Leg (part 30937) includes: four M16 x 2 x 40mm CL10.9 bolts, four 5/8" conical washers, four handle T-pin locking assemblies, four lynch pin handle locks, four castle nuts (M5 Ford), four T-pins (Ford M5), and four T-bushings (Ford M5).
Required tools include M24 wrenches, pliers, and a torque wrench.
Yes. The M5 MY20 GM Leg comes pre-assembled, adjusted, and ready to install.
Using the four M16 x 2 x 40mm hex head bolts, attach the legs to the center section structure by threading the bolts from the inside of the center section into the threaded portion of the legs. Finger tighten the bolts initially until final adjustments are made. Ensure the collars on the leg are completely seated in the corresponding holes in the center section.
1. Remove the two lynch pins. 2. Position the legs over the pucks in the truck bed with handles in the OPEN position. 3. Once the unit is placed in the pucks, rotate the handles back to the CLOSED position. 4. Insert the lynch pins back into the leg to prevent handles from opening during operation.
Due to variations in truck underbeds, it is normal for some handles to be loose and others too tight. If a handle is too loose and rattles or cannot close fully, remove the lynch pin and adjust the castle nut by hand to a position where the handle does not rattle or is able to close. Once adjustment is satisfactory, reinsert the lynch pin and close it properly. Only finger tighten the castle nut.
Each M16 hex-head bolt connecting the legs to the center section must be tightened to 220 ft-lbs of torque with the leg T-pin handles locked and T-pins securely held in the underbed structure.
After tightening the M16 bolts to 220 ft-lbs, verify that the hitch is tight to the truck bed by lifting each side of the hitch. Then assemble the head to the center section per the instructions included with the M5 Center Section and Head.
Before any trip, verify that all lynch pins, foot bracket, and castle nut are undamaged and securely locked with little to no vertical play. The lynch pin should be in the proper orientation in relation to the foot.
Every 1,000 miles, check the M16 hex bolts that connect the center section to the legs to ensure they are still torqued to 220 ft-lbs.
For general maintenance of the entire 5th wheel hitch assembly, refer to the M5 Head and Center Section instruction sheet.

If the head pivots and makes noise when the trailer is not attached, the pivot assembly resistance needs adjustment. Tighten the pivot bolt 1/2 turn at a time (maximum 2 full turns). The pivot bolt and nut are accessible through the open end wrench access point shown in Figure 9B. The pivot assembly resistance is preset at the factory.
If the jaw does not close fully after backing completely into the trailer kingpin, pull the truck slowly forward to remove the load on the jaw. The handle will then fully latch. If the trailer still does not latch, repeat the hitching steps 1 through 3.
If the trailer is not properly hitched and separates from the hitch during the pull test, the truck will move forward. Repeat the hitching steps 1 through 3 to properly couple the trailer.
Due to variations in truck underbeds, some handles may be loose. If a handle rattles or cannot close fully, remove the lynch pin and adjust the castle nut by hand to a position where the handle does not rattle or is able to close. Only finger tighten the castle nut. Once adjustment is satisfactory, reinsert the lynch pin and close it properly.
Due to variations in truck underbeds, some handles may be too tight. If a handle is too tight to close fully, remove the lynch pin and adjust the castle nut by hand to a position where the handle is able to close. Only finger tighten the castle nut. Once adjustment is satisfactory, reinsert the lynch pin and close it properly.
