Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Start heating in the center of the splice connector, then heat from the center outward to the edges on each end until the tubing shrinks and sealant flows. Route the black 12 gauge wire rearward along the frame rail from the front of the vehicle, avoiding hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, and any other points that may pinch or break the wire. If routing the wire through a grommet and along the exterior of the vehicle, continue to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, and pinch points. The wire must reach the module's black box, which is mounted inside the vehicle near the taillight area.
The manual provides two installation procedures. The first variant (steps 1-13, first section) involves accessing the taillight wiring from the rear hatch by removing the plastic threshold cover, cargo trays, and side panel on the driver's side. The second variant (steps 1-13, second section) involves accessing the taillight wiring from the cargo area by removing the cargo floor covering and rear side cargo panels. The T-One® Connector has two ends with different colored wires that insert between the vehicle's taillight connectors and the taillights themselves. Route the harness containing the green wire to the passenger side, crossing the threshold and behind the passenger's side felt panel to the taillight pocket (first variant). In the cargo area variant, route the T-One® Connector ends containing the green wire through the opening and under the metal cargo hook rails and along the threshold to the passenger side. Route the black 12 gauge wire and ground white wire under the driver's side metal cargo hook rails to the battery compartment. After installation, route the 4-flat connector through the driver's side panel and threshold into the storage compartment for storage when not in use. Be careful not to pinch or cut wires during reinstallation of trim panels.
After all connections are complete and the 15 amp fuse is installed, test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. Ensure all connections are complete and secure before testing. If the 4-way connector is not functioning, refer to the troubleshooting guide to diagnose the issue.

(3) Ensure the 4-way flat harness does not get pinched in door latches, trailer connection points, or contact the road surface. (4) Clean connections and add dielectric grease (sold separately) to the terminal pins. These steps help ensure reliable operation and prevent corrosion and damage.
