Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2006-2013 Chevrolet Impala Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118417 (Part #TK118417) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The T-Connector is a wiring harness that integrates your vehicle's taillight system with trailer towing wiring. It connects between your vehicle's existing taillight wiring and provides a 4-flat connector for trailer lights. The product includes a white ground wire, cable ties, an eyelet, and a screw for grounding.
The manual does not specify which vehicle makes, models, or years this T-Connector fits. Contact the manufacturer or your retailer with your vehicle's year, make, model, and cab/bed configuration to confirm compatibility before purchasing.
You will need: a trim panel remover, a drill with a 3/32" drill bit, and a 1/4" socket. Safety glasses are also required during installation.
The T-Connector includes: the T-Connector harness with 4-flat connector end, a white ground wire with eyelet and screw, and cable ties for securing the wires.
The manual does not specify whether the battery must be disconnected. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual or contact the manufacturer for guidance on electrical safety before beginning installation.
You remove the passenger-side taillight assembly. Open the trunk, use a trim panel tool to carefully pry away the threshold plate without damaging clips, pull back the carpet on the passenger side to expose the plastic wing nuts, remove the wing nuts, and carefully pull the taillight away from the vehicle without damaging the alignment pins.
Disconnect the wiring harness at the plugs in the taillight pocket. Verify that the mating surfaces of the vehicle's wiring connectors match the T-Connector ends and that all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt. Plug the T-Connector in between the mating plugs, being careful not to damage the locking tabs. Ensure connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing ground stud. If no suitable point exists, drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area before securing. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed.
Drilling is required only if no suitable existing ground stud is available near the connector. If you must drill, use a 3/32" drill bit to create a hole for the ground wire eyelet and screw. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury, and do not drill into any exposed surfaces.
Route the T-Connector end with the 4-flat connector down through the taillight pocket between the bumper and body towards the center of the bumper. Secure the wires with the cable ties provided.
Reinstall the taillight housing assemblies, positioning the vehicle wiring harness between the housing and the vehicle body. Reinstall the plastic wing nuts, carpet, threshold, and any other items removed during installation. Be careful not to pinch or cut the wires. Secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness with cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling, avoiding any areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire.
Do not exceed the lower of your towing manufacturer's rating or: maximum 1 stop/turn light per side at 7.5 amps, and maximum tail lights at 7.5 amps. Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual and instruction sheet for additional information.
All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly. Test and verify the installation with a test light or by connecting an actual trailer once installed.
Secure all wires with the cable ties provided throughout installation. When reinstalling the taillight assembly and other components, be careful not to pinch or cut the wires. Avoid routing wires through areas that could pinch, cut, or melt them. Secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness to prevent damage or rattling.
All connector mating surfaces must be clean and free of dirt to ensure proper electrical connection. Dirty connectors can cause poor contact and electrical failures. Clean the area before plugging the T-Connector into the vehicle's wiring harness.
The manual does not specify vehicle compatibility. Contact the manufacturer or retailer with your vehicle's year, make, model, and bed/cab configuration to confirm fitment before purchasing.
You need a trim panel remover, a drill with 3/32" bit, and a 1/4" socket. Safety glasses are required.
