Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. The Buick Enclave requires removing two bolts per light and carefully prying the housing away. The Chevrolet Malibu requires removing plastic cargo nuts in the trunk (1 per side) and plastic wing nuts (3 per side) before pulling the taillight away.
The T-Connector kit includes the T-Connector harness with yellow and green wire ends, a 4-Flat connector, cable ties, an eyelet, a screw, and a white wire for grounding. The manual notes that the bracket for mounting the 4-Flat connector is not included and must be sourced separately.
You will need: a drill with a 3/32" drill bit, a Phillips head screwdriver, and either a 7mm socket and ratchet or a 7mm wrench. These tools are used to remove the taillight housing bolts and to drill the grounding hole.
Open the rear door. Remove both taillight housing assemblies by removing the two bolts for each light and carefully prying the vehicle taillight housing assembly away from the vehicle. Be careful not to break the alignment tabs during removal.
Open the trunk and locate the plastic cargo nuts on both sides behind the taillights (1 per side). Remove these nuts and set aside. Carefully pull back the carpet on both sides to expose the plastic wing nuts (3 per side). Remove the wing nuts and set aside. Carefully pull the taillight away from the vehicle, being careful not to damage the alignment pins.
On the driver's side, disconnect the vehicle wiring harness from the taillight socket. Plug the T-Connector end with the yellow wire in-between the mating plugs on the driver's side taillight socket and vehicle wiring harness. This creates a splice connection between the vehicle's original wiring and the T-Connector.
On the driver's side, route the T-Connector end with the green wire and the 4-Flat connector down through the opening between the vehicle bumper and body. Route the T-Connector end with the green wire to the passenger's side and route the 4-Flat underneath the bumper. Route the T-Connector end with the green wire up through the opening on the passenger side. Repeat the connection process for the passenger side. Route all wiring carefully to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector such as the vehicle's frame or cross member. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area. Drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle and personal injury. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces.
A 3/32" drill bit is required to drill the grounding hole for the white wire eyelet.
Reinstall the taillight housing assemblies, positioning the vehicle wiring harness between the housing and the vehicle body. Secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness with the cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling. Be careful to avoid any areas that would cut or pinch the wire.
Mount the 4-Flat connector in a suitable location under the vehicle. The manual notes that a bracket is not included with the kit, so you will need to source and install an appropriate mounting bracket separately.
