Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2010-2010 Dodge Journey Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118495 (Part #TK118495) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The T-Connector is a wiring adapter that allows you to connect a trailer to your Dodge Journey. It intercepts the vehicle's taillight wiring and provides a 4-flat connector for the trailer, while maintaining the vehicle's original lighting function. The adapter uses separate connectors for the driver's side (yellow wire) and passenger's side (green wire) of the vehicle.
Yes, the T-Connector (118495-037) is designed for the Dodge Journey. The manual confirms it is compatible with this vehicle model.
You will need: a trim panel remover, a 10mm socket and ratchet or 10mm wrench, a drill with a 3/32" drill bit, and a test-probe. The test-probe is used to verify the installation after completion.
The T-Connector includes an eyelet and screw for securing the white ground wire. The manual also references a 4-Flat mounting bracket sold separately for permanent storage of the 4-flat connector in the spare tire compartment.
Yes. You must open the tailgate and remove the right side taillight assembly by removing the two clips holding it in place. This gives you access to the connection points behind the taillight housings where the T-Connector adapters are inserted.
Begin on the driver's side. Separate the vehicle's wiring connectors carefully without breaking the locking tabs, then insert the T-Connector with the yellow wire between the vehicle's mating connectors. Ensure connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Then route the harness containing the green wire and 4-flat connector down the opening behind the driver's side taillight, route it to the center of the vehicle, and route it underneath the vehicle and up through the opening behind the passenger's side taillight. Repeat the process on the passenger's side using the T-Connector containing the green wire.
The connectors are fully inserted when the locking tabs are in place. The manual emphasizes that all connector surfaces must be clean and free of dirt before insertion, and that connectors must be fully inserted with locking tabs in place for proper function.
Drilling is required only for the ground wire connection. You must locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing ground stud. If no existing ground stud is available, you must drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle and personal injury. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces.
Drill a 3/32" hole for the ground wire connection. Before drilling, clean dirt and rustproofing from the area and verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury.
No. The manual explicitly states: 'Do not drill into vehicle floor or bed.' You must locate a suitable grounding point such as an existing ground stud, or drill a 3/32" hole in an appropriate location away from the floor and bed.
The T-Connector uses three wire colors: yellow wire (driver's side connector), green wire (passenger's side connector), and white wire (ground connection). The yellow and green wires connect to the vehicle's taillight wiring on their respective sides. The white wire must be grounded to a suitable grounding point using the eyelet and screw provided.
The 4-flat connector should be stored in the spare tire compartment when not in use. A 4-flat mounting bracket (sold separately) is available for permanent mounting in the spare tire compartment.
The T-Connector has the following maximum amperage limits: max. stop/turn light is 7.5 amps, and max. tail lights is 7.5 amps. Do not exceed the lower of your towing manufacturer's rating or these limits. Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual and instruction sheet for additional information.
Wear safety glasses and use all safety precautions during installation. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle and personal injury. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before insertion. All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly.
Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed. The manual emphasizes that all connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly. Use a test-probe (included in required tools) to verify the installation.
After installation, verify that all connections are complete and properly seated with locking tabs in place. Test the installation with a test light or trailer to ensure all lights function correctly. The manual warns that all connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly.
Max. stop/turn light: 7.5 amps; max. tail lights: 7.5 amps. Do not exceed the lower of your towing manufacturer's rating or these limits.
