Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2006-2010 Jeep Commander Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118408 (Part #TK118408) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The T-Connector is a vehicle taillight wiring integration module that allows a trailer to connect to your vehicle's existing taillight system. It intercepts the vehicle's taillight wiring and provides a 4-Flat connector for trailer lighting. The black box mounts behind the driver's side taillight assembly and distributes power to the trailer's stop, turn, and tail lights.
The manual does not specify which vehicles or model years are compatible with this T-Connector. You should verify compatibility with the manufacturer or a fitment database before purchasing. The installation instructions assume a vehicle with accessible taillight assemblies that can be removed by clips and a suitable grounding point near the driver's side taillight.
You will need: a drill with a 3/32" drill bit, a Phillips head screwdriver, and a trim panel remover. The T-Connector kit includes double-sided tape, cable ties, an eyelet, and a screw for the ground connection, but the bracket for the 4-Flat connector is not included.
The kit includes: double-sided tape for mounting the black box, cable ties for securing the harness under the bumper, an eyelet and screw for the white ground wire connection. The 4-Flat connector bracket is not included and must be sourced separately.
The manual does not specify whether battery disconnection is required. Contact the manufacturer or consult your vehicle's owner's manual for guidance on electrical work safety.
Open the tailgate and locate the two clips holding each taillight assembly in place. Carefully pry the housings away from the vehicle using a trim panel remover, being careful not to break the alignment tabs. Repeat this process for both the right and left side taillight assemblies.
The T-Connector end with the yellow wire plugs in between the mating plugs on the driver's side taillight socket and the vehicle wiring harness. This intercepts the taillight power signal. Repeat this connection on the passenger's side as well.
On the driver's side, route the T-Connector end with the green wire and the 4-Flat connector down through the opening between the vehicle bumper and body. Route the green wire end to the passenger's side and route the 4-Flat underneath the bumper. On the passenger's side, route the green wire end up through the opening, being careful to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any points that may pinch or break the wire.
Yes. You must drill a 3/32" hole to secure the white ground wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into the vehicle floor, bed, or any exposed surfaces. Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector.
Drill a 3/32" hole for the white ground wire. Secure it using the eyelet and screw provided in the kit.
Mount the black box behind the taillight assembly on the driver's side. Clean a flat area using a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water, then secure the black box using the double-sided tape provided in the kit.
After routing the wiring, secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness under the bumper using the cable ties provided. Be careful to avoid any areas that would cut or pinch the wire.
Mount the 4-Flat connector in a suitable location under the vehicle. The bracket is not included with the T-Connector kit, so you will need to source an appropriate bracket separately.
Position the vehicle wiring harness between the taillight housing and the vehicle body, then reinstall the taillight housing assemblies. Ensure they are properly seated and secured by the clips.
Do not exceed the lower of your towing manufacturer's rating or: maximum 1 stop/turn light per side (2.1 amps), and maximum tail lights (5 amps). Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual and instruction sheet for additional information.
All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly. Test and verify the installation with a test light or by connecting an actual trailer once installed. Ensure all wiring is secure and no connections are loose.
When routing the green wire and 4-Flat connector under the vehicle, be careful to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, and any other points that may pinch or break the wire. Secure all loose wiring with the cable ties provided, avoiding areas that would cut or pinch the wire.
Clean a flat area behind the driver's side taillight assembly using a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water. This removes dirt and residue to ensure the double-sided tape adheres properly.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area using appropriate cleaning methods before drilling the 3/32" hole for the white ground wire.
The manual does not specify compatible vehicles or model years. Verify fitment with the manufacturer or a fitment database before purchasing.
