Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

Yes. Step 8 requires you to disconnect the vehicle's negative (−) battery cable before connecting the power wire to the positive battery terminal. Reconnect the negative cable in step 9 after the fuse holder is installed.
Yes. Step 1 requires you to open the rear glass gate and tailgate, then remove the T20 Torx screws holding the taillight housings in place. Carefully pry the taillight housings rearward away from the vehicle, being careful not to break the alignment tabs. The taillight assemblies are reinstalled in step 11.
Step 2 requires you to slide the red locking tab on the harness connector to the unlocked position and disconnect the vehicle's wire harness from both taillight sockets. In step 3, plug the T-Connector harness containing the yellow wire between the vehicle's mating connectors, then slide the red locking tab into the locked position. Repeat for the passenger side in step 5 using the harness end with the green wire.
Step 4 requires you to route the harness containing the green wire and the 4-flat connector down the opening behind the taillight on the driver's side, then route the 4-flat to the center of the vehicle. Route the harness containing the green wire underneath the vehicle and up through the opening behind the passenger's side taillight. Step 12 requires you to secure the remainder of the harness with cable ties provided, avoiding areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire.
Yes. Step 6 requires you to drill a 3/32" hole for the white ground wire. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed, and do not drill any exposed surfaces. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area, then drill the hole and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided.
Step 6 requires you to locate a suitable grounding point near the adapter such as the vehicle frame or crossmember. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area before drilling.
The T-Connector uses colour-coded wires: yellow wire connects to the driver's side taillight connector (step 3), green wire connects to the passenger's side taillight connector (step 5), white wire is the ground wire that connects to the vehicle frame or crossmember (step 6), red 12 ga. wire is the power wire from the T-Connector module (step 7), and black 12 ga. wire connects the power wire to the vehicle's positive battery terminal via the fuse holder (steps 7–8).
Step 7 requires you to locate the red 12 ga. power wire from the T-Connector box on the driver's side and attach the black 12 ga. wire provided. Route the black wire along the exterior frame or follow existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery, avoiding areas that may pinch, break, or melt the wire. Step 8 requires you to disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable, then attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 ga. wire using the yellow butt connector provided. Step 9 requires you to reconnect the negative battery cable and install the 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder.
The T-Connector uses a 15 amp fuse. The fuse holder is provided with the product. Step 8 requires you to install the fuse into the fuse holder after connecting the power wire to the vehicle's positive battery terminal.
Step 6 requires you to locate a suitable grounding point near the adapter such as the vehicle frame or crossmember (do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed). Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area. Drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided.
Step 10 requires you to mount the black box behind the taillight assembly on the driver's side. Clean a flat area using a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water, then mount the box using cable ties or double-sided tape provided. The epoxy side of the module must point towards the ground to prevent water buildup. The module must not be mounted underneath the vehicle or in an area directly exposed to the elements. Ensure the taillight assembly can be reinstalled before mounting the box.
Step 4 requires you to route the 4-flat connector to the center of the vehicle. The manual notes that the 4-flat should be mounted in a suitable location under the vehicle, but does not specify the exact location. Consult your installer or the manufacturer for the recommended mounting location on your vehicle.
Do not exceed the lower of the vehicle manufacturer's rating or: maximum 2 stop/turn lights per side (4.2 amps total), or maximum tail lights (7.5 amps). Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual and instruction sheet for additional information.
Wear safety glasses and use all safety precautions during installation. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into the vehicle floor, bed, or any exposed surfaces. Route wires carefully to avoid areas that may pinch, break, or melt the wire. Read and follow all warnings and cautions printed on the vehicle's battery. Ensure all connections are complete before testing.
Step 9 requires you to test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition, then re-insert the key and turn it to the proper position. All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly.
After installation, verify that: (1) all wire connections are secure and complete, (2) the black module box is mounted with the epoxy side pointing downward and is not underneath the vehicle or directly exposed to elements, (3) the taillight assemblies are reinstalled without pinching or cutting wires, (4) the harness is secured with cable ties to prevent damage or rattling, (5) the 4-flat connector is mounted in a suitable location under the vehicle, and (6) the T-Connector functions properly using a test light or trailer.
The T-Connector is designed for the Jeep Liberty. Confirm your specific model year and body style with the manufacturer before purchasing.
Yes, disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable before connecting the power wire to the positive terminal (step 8). Reconnect it after the fuse holder is installed (step 9).
The T-Connector uses a 15 amp fuse, provided with the product. Install it into the fuse holder after connecting the power wire to the vehicle's positive battery terminal.
Do not exceed: 2 stop/turn lights per side (4.2 amps) or tail lights (7.5 amps). Overloading can cause fires. Check your vehicle's owner's manual for additional limits.
Step 9 states that all connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly. Verify that: (1) the yellow wire harness is locked into the driver's side taillight connector, (2) the green wire harness is locked into the passenger's side taillight connector, (3) the white ground wire is securely fastened to the vehicle frame or crossmember, (4) the black 12 ga. power wire is connected to the vehicle's positive battery terminal via the fuse holder, (5) the 15 amp fuse is installed in the fuse holder, and (6) the negative battery cable is reconnected. Reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the ignition key, then re-insert and turn to the proper position.
The module is not mounted correctly. Step 10 requires that the epoxy side of the module point towards the ground to prevent water buildup. Remount the black box so that the epoxy side faces downward. Also ensure the module is not mounted underneath the vehicle or in an area directly exposed to elements, as this can cause damage.
Step 10 includes a warning to ensure the taillight assembly can be reinstalled before mounting the black box. If the box is already mounted and blocking the taillight, you must remount the black box in a different location behind the taillight assembly on the driver's side, or use a different mounting method (cable ties instead of double-sided tape, or vice versa) to ensure clearance.
