Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Route the green wire and 4-flat harness down behind the driver's taillight, underneath the vehicle center, and up behind the passenger's taillight. 5. Insert the green-wire T-Connector end on the passenger's side and lock into place. 6. Drill and secure the white ground wire on the driver's side. 7. Disconnect the negative battery cable, cut the fuse holder wire, attach the ring terminal to the positive battery cable, and connect the fuse holder to the black 12 ga. wire with a yellow butt connector. 8. Route the black wire to the rear driver's side and connect to the black power wire on the T-Connector black box. 9. Reconnect the negative battery cable and install the 15 amp fuse. 10. Mount the black box on the driver's side with double-sided tape and secure the harness with cable ties. 11. Reinstall the taillight housings. 12. Mount the 4-flat connector in an accessible location.
Open the tailgate and locate the two clips holding each taillight assembly in place. Remove both clips, then carefully pry the housing away from the vehicle, being careful not to break the alignment tabs. Repeat for both the right and left side taillight assemblies.
On both the driver's and passenger's sides, locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness connector. Separate the connector carefully, avoiding damage to the locking tabs. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt. On the driver's side, insert the T-Connector end with the yellow wire between the vehicle wiring connectors and lock into place, ensuring the locking tabs are fully engaged. Repeat on the passenger's side using the T-Connector end with the green wire. Be careful not to damage the locking tabs during insertion.
Route the harness containing the green wire and the 4-flat connector down the opening behind the taillight on the driver's side. Route the 4-flat harness underneath and to the center of the vehicle. Route the harness containing the green wire underneath the vehicle and up through the opening behind the passenger's side taillight. When routing all wires, be careful to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, and any other points that may pinch or break the wire.
Locate a suitable grounding point on the driver's side near the taillight connectors. Drill a 3/32" hole at this location. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces. Secure the white ground wire to this hole using the eyelet and screw provided.
1. Disconnect the vehicle's negative (−) battery cable. 2. If not already removed, remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder provided. 3. Cut the fuse holder wire and attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. 4. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 ga. wire using the yellow butt connector provided. 5. Route the black wire out of the engine compartment and to the rear driver's side of the vehicle. 6. Connect the other end of the black 12 ga. wire to the black power wire on the T-Connector black box using the yellow butt connector provided. 7. Reconnect the vehicle's negative (−) battery cable. 8. Install the 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder.
The fuse rating is 15 amps. The yellow fuse holder is provided with the kit. Install the use after all other connections are complete and the negative battery cable has been reconnected.
Mount the black box on the driver's side using the double-sided tape provided. Ensure the epoxy side of the module is pointed towards the ground to prevent water buildup. After mounting, secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness with the cable ties provided to prevent damage, rattling, and to avoid any areas that would cut or pinch the wire.
