Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2011-2017 Volkswagen Touareg Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118668 (Part #TK118668) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The T-Connector is a trailer wiring interface for Volkswagen Touareg vehicles. It connects the vehicle's taillight wiring to a trailer connector, allowing you to tow a trailer with integrated lighting. The system includes a converter box, wiring harness with yellow and green connectors, and a 15 amp fuse holder for power protection.
Yes, the T-Connector 118668-037 is designed for Volkswagen Touareg vehicles. The manual does not specify model years or trim levels, so contact the manufacturer or your installer to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle year and configuration.
You will need: Torx 30 driver, 11mm socket or wrench, #2 Phillips screwdriver, trim panel remover, drill with 3/32" drill bit, 1/4" socket, wire crimpers, wire cutters, and a test probe. A test light or trailer is also needed to verify the installation after completion.
The kit includes: two T-Connector ends (one with yellow wire, one with green wire), a black converter box, a yellow fuse holder with 15 amp fuse, yellow butt connectors, a white eyelet and screw for grounding, and double-sided tape for mounting the converter box. The 4-flat connector is routed through the driver-side trim panel for storage when not in use.
Yes. You must disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable before connecting the fuse holder to the positive (+) battery terminal in step 7. The negative cable is reconnected in step 9 after the fuse is installed.
You must remove: the taillight housing assemblies, all floor coverings and storage trays, four cargo latches (two each side), two small trim pieces from the floor, the threshold plate, and partially remove the lower interior trim panels on each side. All these items are reinstalled after the wiring is routed.
On the driver's side, route the T-Connector end with the yellow wire out of the square hole to the taillight pocket area, then plug it between the mating plugs on the driver's side taillight socket and vehicle wiring harness. Route the green wire connector down the threshold to the passenger side and repeat the process. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before connecting.
Mount the black converter box on the driver's side of the vehicle on a flat surface in an out-of-the-way place using the double-sided tape provided. The exact location is not specified in the manual; choose a location that does not interfere with vehicle operation or occupant safety.
From inside the vehicle, connect the black 12 gauge wire from the T-Connector black box to the black 12 gauge wire using the supplied yellow butt connector. Then route the combined black wire either through a grommet and along the exterior frame, or follow existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery. Avoid areas that may pinch or break the wire.
Yes. You must drill a 3/32" hole to secure the white ground wire using the eyelet and screw provided. The hole should be drilled near a suitable grounding point. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed, and verify what is behind any surface before drilling to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury.
Drill a 3/32" hole for the white ground wire. The wire is secured using the eyelet and screw provided in the kit. The hole should be located near the connector at a suitable grounding point on the vehicle.
The T-Connector uses a 15 amp fuse. The fuse is installed in the yellow fuse holder provided with the kit and is connected to the vehicle's positive (+) battery terminal.
The black power wire is 12 gauge (12 ga.). This wire connects from the fuse holder to the T-Connector black box and must be routed carefully to avoid pinching or breaking.
The T-Connector has three main wires: yellow wire (driver's side taillight connection), green wire (passenger's side taillight connection), and white wire (ground connection). The black wire from the converter box connects to the 12 gauge black power wire that runs to the battery. Yellow butt connectors are used to join the black wires together.
After disconnecting the negative battery cable, cut the fuse holder wire and attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow butt connector provided. The 15 amp fuse is installed in the fuse holder. Reconnect the negative battery cable after the fuse is installed.
Always wear safety glasses during installation. Read and follow all warnings on the vehicle battery before connecting to it. Verify what is behind any surface before drilling to avoid damage or personal injury. Do not drill into the vehicle floor, bed, or exposed surfaces. When routing wire through a grommet and along the exterior, avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, and other points that may pinch or break the wire. Do not exceed the stated product ratings or towing manufacturer rating.
Overloading circuits can cause fires. Do not exceed the stated product ratings or the towing manufacturer rating stated in your vehicle owner's manual. Read your vehicle's owner's manual and instruction sheet for additional information about towing capacity and electrical limits.
After installation is complete, test and verify the installation with a test light or by connecting an actual trailer. This confirms that all wiring connections are correct and the lighting system is functioning properly before towing.
After reinstalling the taillight housing assemblies, ensure the vehicle wiring harness is positioned between the housing and the vehicle body. Replace each white plastic bolt assembly on both sides using an 11mm socket or wrench. Reinstall all plastic trim panels, threshold, storage covers, and floor covering carefully, ensuring no wires are pinched or cut. Route the 4-flat connector through the driver-side trim panel into the side storage compartment for storage when not in use.
