Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118685 (Part #TK118685) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The T-Connector is a wiring adapter that integrates your vehicle's taillights with a trailer's electrical system. It connects the vehicle's taillight wiring to a 4-flat connector for trailer use. The product includes a black box module, fuse holder with 15 amp fuse, wire harnesses with red, green, yellow, and brown wires, a white ground wire with eyelet, ring terminal, nut, screw, butt connector, and cable ties.
The T-Connector is designed for the Tacoma. However, the manual does not specify which model years or trim levels are compatible. Contact the manufacturer or your installer to confirm fitment for your specific Tacoma generation and year.
You will need: trim panel remover, 10mm socket and ratchet (or 10mm wrench), wire crimpers, wire cutters, test-probe, and a drill with 3/32" drill bit. Safety glasses are also required during installation.
The kit includes: black box module, red and green wire harness, yellow and brown wire harness, 4-flat connector, 3-pin housing connectors, 12 gauge black wire, white ground wire with eyelet, ring terminal, nut, screw, yellow fuse holder with 15 amp fuse, yellow butt connector, and cable ties.
Yes. You must disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable before connecting the fuse holder to the positive battery cable in step 9. After all connections are complete, reconnect the negative battery cable and install the 15 amp fuse.
Yes. The first step is to open the tailgate and remove the vehicle's taillights by carefully prying the housings away from the vehicle. Be careful not to break the alignment tabs. The taillights are reinstalled at the end of the installation in step 12.
On the driver's side, separate the vehicle's taillight wiring connectors and locate the 3-pin housing that matches the T-one connector with the yellow and brown wire. Lock it into place. On the passenger side, connect the green wire with the 3-pin flat housing to the corresponding connectors, and connect the T-connector end with the red wire to the mating housings. All connector surfaces must be clean and free of dirt before connecting.
Route the harness containing the red and green wire and the 4-flat connector down the opening behind the taillight on the driver's side, then route the 4-flat harness to the center of the vehicle. Route the harness containing the red and green wire underneath the vehicle and up through the opening behind the passenger's side taillight. Route the black 12 gauge wire from the front of the vehicle rearward along the frame rail. Always route wires carefully to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, or any points that may pinch or break the wire.
Drilling is required only if you use the alternative grounding method. If a ground stud is not available in the driver's side taillight pocket, you must drill a 3/32" hole in a suitable grounding point near the adapter, such as the vehicle frame or crossmember. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces.
The T-Connector uses a 15 amp fuse. This fuse is installed in the yellow fuse holder provided and must be installed after the negative battery cable is reconnected.
Use a 3/32" drill bit to create the hole for the ground wire installation when using the alternative grounding method.
The T-Connector uses the following wires: yellow and brown wires connect to the 3-pin housing on the driver's side taillight; red and green wires route through the vehicle and connect to the passenger side taillight; white wire is the ground wire that connects to either the ground stud in the driver's side taillight pocket or to a suitable grounding point via a 3/32" drilled hole; black 12 gauge wire routes from the front of the vehicle along the frame rail to the fuse holder and positive battery cable.
Disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable. Remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder if not already removed. Cut the fuse holder wire and attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow butt connector provided. Reconnect the negative battery cable and install the 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder.
The black 12 gauge wire routes from the front of the vehicle rearward along the frame rail and connects to the fuse holder and positive battery cable. It provides power to the T-Connector system.
Locate a flat surface in an out-of-the-way place and mount the T-Connector's black box module to prevent damage or rattling. The epoxy side of the module must point toward the ground to prevent water buildup.
Mount the 4-flat connector end in an accessible location with a bracket or electrical box. Note that the bracket or electrical box is not included with the T-Connector kit.
Secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness with the cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling. Be careful to avoid any areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire.
Always wear safety glasses during installation. Read and follow all warnings and instructions included with the product before beginning. Route wires carefully to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, or any points that may pinch or break the wire. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into the vehicle floor, bed, or any exposed surfaces. Read and follow all warnings and cautions printed on the tow vehicle's battery.
Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturing rating (including in your vehicle owner's manual) or the specific amperage ratings stated on the product. Overloading circuits can cause fires.
Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly.
