Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. The T-Connector harness connects to the vehicle's taillight wiring harness on both the driver and passenger sides. Each side has a matching connection point. The harness containing the green wire connects on the passenger side first, and the harness containing the yellow wire connects on the driver side. All connector surfaces must be clean and free of dirt before connecting.
Route the harness containing the yellow wire behind the fascia and door hinge bracket, then across the vehicle to the driver side. Hide the wire behind the top of the bumper fascia while routing. Once routed to the driver side, route the wire behind the fascia and door hinge bracket to the taillight pocket area. Be careful to avoid any areas that would cut, pinch, or melt the wire. Use the cable ties provided to secure the harness and prevent damage or rattling.
The black box is a module that mounts behind the taillight assembly on the passenger side. Clean a flat area behind the taillight using a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water, then mount the black box using the double-sided tape provided. The epoxy side of the module must point toward the ground to prevent water buildup. Verify that the taillight assembly can be reinstalled before mounting the black box.
The black 12 gauge power wire from the T-Connector box connects to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable through a yellow fuse holder (provided). First, disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable. Remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder if not already removed. After cutting the fuse holder wire, attach the ring terminal and secure it to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow butt connector provided. Route the black wire either through a grommet along the exterior frame or along existing wiring through the thresholds into the engine compartment, avoiding areas that may pinch or break the wire.
The yellow fuse holder protects the power circuit. It connects between the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable and the black 12 gauge power wire from the T-Connector box using yellow butt connectors. The fuse holder should be removed if already installed, then the wire should be cut and the ring terminal attached to the positive battery cable.
Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer rating or: maximum 2 stop/turn lights per side (4.2 amps total) or maximum tail lights (7.5 amps). Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual and instruction sheet for additional information.
All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly. Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition.
Open the rear door. On both the driver and passenger sides, remove two bolts and carefully pry the taillight housings rearward away from the vehicle, being careful not to break the alignment tabs. This will expose the taillight wiring harness connection points.
On the passenger side, remove the access panel to locate the rear of the taillight area. Route the 4-flat connector through the access hole in the taillight pocket area and exit through the area where the access panel was removed. Store the 4-flat connector in the rear cargo area when not in use.
After completing the T-Connector installation, reinstall the taillight housings that were removed in step 1. Also replace the access panel that was removed in step 7 to locate the rear of the taillight area.
The white wire is the ground wire. It must be secured to a suitable grounding point near the connector using the eyelet and screw provided. Drill a 3/32" hole to secure it. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces.
