Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

You will need a trim panel remover and a test-probe. These are the only tools specified as required for installation.
The grey 12-pin tow plug connector is located inside the cab towards the center on the back wall. To access it, open the driver's side rear door and remove the rear seat trim panel. The connector will be near the green relays on the driver's side.
Insert the black box-module into the grey 12-pin tow plug carefully. Be careful not to damage the locking tabs and ensure that the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. The module should be fully seated before proceeding.
Mount the black box-module on a flat surface or an out-of-the-way place using the cable tie or double-sided tape provided. This prevents damage or rattling during vehicle operation.
Install the following fuses in the fuse panel under the hood on the driver's side: two 7.5 Amp fuses at Position 6 (+B TRL HAZARD) and Position 7 (+B TRL BACKUP), and one 20 Amp fuse at Position 9 (TRAILER SMALL). All fuses are provided with the product.
Use two 7.5 Amp fuses (Positions 6 and 7) and one 20 Amp fuse (Position 9). All fuses are provided. Do not use higher amperage fuses as this can damage the vehicle and trailer.
Replacing fuses that exceed the required amperage could result in damage to the vehicle and/or trailer. Additionally, overloading circuits can cause fires. You must not exceed the lower of either the towing manufacturer's rating (including in your vehicle owner's manual) or the specific amperage ratings stated on the product.
The large grey housing is located under the vehicle bumper on the driver's side. You will need to remove the protective cap carefully, being careful not to break the locking tabs, before plugging in the towing harness.
First, remove the protective cap from the large grey housing under the bumper on the driver's side, being careful not to break the locking tabs. Ensure the mating surfaces are free of dirt. Then plug the towing harness into the grey tow plug, being careful not to damage the locking tabs and ensuring the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Route the T-Connector harness rearward to the back of the fascia of the bumper. The 4-flat harness should be routed underneath and to the center of the vehicle. Mount the 4-flat end in an accessible location with a bracket or electrical box (not included).
Route the wire carefully to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire. Secure the remainder of the harness under the bumper with the provided cable ties, being careful to avoid any areas that would cut or pinch the wire.
All connections must be complete for the T-One® T-Connector to function properly. Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition.
Temporarily remove the key from the ignition to reset the vehicle electrical system. This should be done before your initial test with a test light or trailer.
Yes, you must remove the rear seat trim panel to access the grey 12-pin tow plug connector area inside the cab. The connector is located near the green relays on the driver's side, and the trim panel must be removed to reach it.
Reinstall any items removed during installation, being careful not to pinch or cut the wires. This includes the rear seat trim panel and any other components that were removed to access the connector area.
The fuse panel is located under the hood on the driver's side. You will need to open the fuse cover to access the positions where the T-One® T-Connector fuses must be installed.
Always wear safety glasses and use all safety precautions during installation. Read and follow all warnings and instructions included with the product before beginning installation.
