Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Open the tailgate. On the driver's side, use a trim panel puller to carefully pry away the black taillight trim cover to expose two 10mm fasteners, being careful not to damage clips. Remove two 10mm screws on both driver and passenger sides. Carefully pull each taillight away from the vehicle, being careful not to damage the alignment pins. Remove and set aside the taillight housings.
Locate the taillight wiring harness on both driver and passenger sides. The harness has a connection point matching the ends of the T-Connector. Separate the connector carefully without breaking the locking tabs. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt. Plug the T-Connector end with the yellow wire between the mating plugs on the driver's side taillight socket and vehicle wiring harness. Repeat on the passenger side with the green wire end.
Mount the black box underneath the vehicle behind the rear bumper fascia on the driver's side using the provided double-sided tape. Ensure the module is in a protected area away from road debris and objects that could be driven over. Mount it with the epoxy side pointed toward the ground to prevent water buildup. Verify the trailer's wire harness has adequate length to reach this point.
On the driver's side, fish the T-Connector end with yellow wires up between the bumper and vehicle body into the taillight pocket. Route the T-Connector end with green wire to the passenger's side and route the 4-flat connector underneath the bumper. Route the green wire end up through the opening on the passenger side, being careful to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, or other points that may pinch or break the wire. Route the 4-flat harness underneath and to the center of the vehicle.
Yes. You must drill a 3/32" hole to secure the white ground wire. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed, and do not drill into any exposed surfaces. Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector such as the vehicle's frame or crossmember, clean dirt and rustproofing from the area, then drill the hole and secure the white wire using the provided eyelet and screw.
Locate the black 12 gauge power wire from the T-Connector box on the driver's side. Attach the black 12 gauge wire provided. Route the black wire along the exterior frame or follow existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery, avoiding areas that may pinch or break the wire. Disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable. Remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder if not already removed. After cutting the fuse holder wire, attach the ring terminal and secure it to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow butt connector provided.
Install a 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder after reconnecting the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable. The fuse holder is provided with the kit.
The T-Connector has yellow wires that connect to the driver's side taillight socket and vehicle wiring harness. It has green wires that connect to the passenger's side taillight socket and vehicle wiring harness. The white wire is the ground wire, which is secured to the vehicle's frame or crossmember using an eyelet and screw. After all connections are complete, test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the T-One T-Connector to function properly.
