Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2018-2021 BMW X3 Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118823 (Part #TK118823) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The T-One® T-Connector is a wiring harness that integrates trailer lighting into a vehicle's electrical system. It connects to the vehicle's taillight wiring on both driver and passenger sides, routes power from the vehicle battery through a fused connection, and provides a 4-flat connector for trailer use. The connector must be fully installed and tested before use.
The manual shows installation on a BMW X3. However, the manual does not explicitly state which model years, body styles, or configurations are compatible. Contact the manufacturer or a fitment database to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle before purchase.
You will need: trim panel remover, 10 mm socket and ratchet or 10 mm wrench, drill with 3/32" drill bit, 1/4" socket, wire crimpers, wire cutters, Phillips head screwdriver, and test probe. These tools are required to remove trim panels, disconnect connectors, drill the grounding hole, and test the installation.
The kit includes: two T-Connector ends (one with yellow wire, one with green wire), a black 12 ga. power wire, a white ground wire with eyelet and screw, a yellow fuse holder with 15 amp fuse, a yellow butt connector, cable ties, and a 4-flat connector. The 4-flat connector is stored in the rear cargo area when not in use.
The manual requires you to disconnect the vehicle's negative (−) battery cable at step 8, after the T-Connector ends have been inserted into the taillight harnesses. However, you should read and follow all warnings printed on your vehicle's battery before beginning work.
You must partially remove: the plastic threshold cover, side panels, cargo trays, and rear interior trim panels on both the driver and passenger sides. Several trim panel fasteners will need to be removed. Set aside all items carefully to avoid damage, and replace them at the end of installation (step 12).
On the driver's side, insert the T-Connector end with the yellow wire between the vehicle's taillight wiring connectors and lock into place, ensuring locking tabs are fully engaged. Route the connector with the green wire down the threshold to the passenger side, then insert it between the passenger-side taillight connectors and lock into place. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before insertion, and verify that locking tabs are fully in place on both sides.
Yes. You must drill a 3/32" hole to secure the white ground wire. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into the vehicle floor, bed, or any exposed surfaces. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area first. Secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the T-Connector, such as the vehicle's frame or crossmember. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area, drill a 3/32" hole, and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided.
Option 1: Route the black 12 ga. wire from the T-Connector box through trim panels and down the threshold to the vehicle battery in the rear cargo area on the driver's side. Option 2: Route the black wire along the exterior frame or follow existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery. If using Option 2, avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, and any points that may pinch or break the wire.
After disconnecting the vehicle's negative (−) battery cable, remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder (if not already removed). Cut the fuse holder wire, attach the ring terminal, and secure it to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 ga. wire using the yellow butt connector provided. Then reconnect the negative battery cable and install the 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder.
A 15 amp fuse is installed in the yellow fuse holder. This fuse protects the circuit and must be installed before the T-Connector can function. Do not exceed the product's amperage rating or the towing manufacturer's rating stated in your vehicle's owner's manual.
Mount the black box-module on a flat surface in an out-of-the-way location to prevent damage or rattling. Secure the remainder of the harness with the cable ties provided, being careful to avoid any areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire.
Store the 4-flat connector in the rear cargo area when not in use. When in use, pull the 4-flat connector through the door and close the door carefully. Be careful not to pinch the harness in the door latch.
All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly. Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed. For the initial test, reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. Reconnect the negative battery cable and install the 15 amp fuse before testing.
Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer's rating (including in your vehicle owner's manual) or the specific amperage rating stated on the product. Overloading circuits can cause fires. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual and the product documentation for the exact amperage rating.
Always wear safety glasses and use all safety precautions during installation. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into exposed surfaces. Read and follow all warnings and cautions printed on the tow vehicle's battery. Read and follow all warnings and instructions included with the product before beginning installation.
Replace both access panels, spare tire cover, cargo floor hatch, and cargo nets that were removed during installation. Verify that all connections are complete and test the installation with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition.
The manual confirms installation on BMW X3. For other vehicles, contact the manufacturer or check a fitment database, as compatibility is not stated for other models.
