Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2020-2022 BMW X1 Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118843 (Part #TK118843) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The T-One® Connector is a wiring harness that integrates with your vehicle's taillight system to provide trailer lighting control. It intercepts the vehicle's taillight signals and routes them to a trailer connector, allowing your trailer lights to function in sync with your vehicle's brake, turn, and running lights.
The manual shows installation on a BMW X1 in the diagram. However, the manual does not explicitly list all compatible vehicles or model years. Contact the manufacturer or your installer to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle year and configuration before purchasing.
You will need: trim panel remover, 10mm socket and ratchet (or 10mm wrench), drill with 3/32" drill bit, wire crimpers, wire cutters, Phillips head screwdriver, and a test probe. These tools are required to remove taillights, disconnect wiring, drill a ground hole, and test the installation.
The kit includes: double-sided tape for mounting the black box, an eyelet and screw for grounding, cable ties for securing the harness, yellow butt connectors for wire connections, and a yellow fuse holder with a 15 amp fuse. All fasteners and connectors needed for installation are provided.
Yes. You must disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable before connecting the power wiring to the battery. This is done in step 11, after routing the black 12 gauge wire from the front of the vehicle. Reconnect the battery cable only after the fuse holder and all connections are complete.
Yes. You must remove both the driver and passenger side taillights to access the taillight wiring connectors. Open the rear tailgate, remove two 10mm nuts from each taillight pocket, and carefully pull the taillights away from the vehicle without damaging the alignment pins. The taillights are reinstalled at the end of the installation.
After removing the taillights and disconnecting the vehicle wiring harness, insert the T-One® Connector ends between the vehicle's taillight connectors and lock them into place. The yellow wire connector goes on the driver's side and the green wire connector goes on the passenger's side. Ensure the locking tabs are fully engaged and not damaged. The connectors sandwich between the vehicle's original connectors.
Mount the black box underneath the vehicle behind the rear bumper fascia on the driver's side using the double-sided tape provided. The epoxy side of the module must point toward the ground to prevent water buildup. Choose a suitable mounting point that is protected and accessible.
You may need to drill one 3/32" hole for the ground wire, but only if a suitable existing ground stud is not available near the connector. If you drill, do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area before securing the white ground wire with the eyelet and screw provided.
Route the yellow wire harness underneath the vehicle up through the opening between the bumper and body to the driver's side taillight pocket. Route the green wire harness underneath the vehicle to the passenger's side taillight pocket. Route the black 12 gauge power wire from the front of the vehicle rearward along the frame rail. Avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, and any points that may pinch or break the wire. Secure all wires with the cable ties provided.
Disconnect the negative battery cable first. Remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder provided. Cut the fuse holder wire and attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using a yellow butt connector. Route the black wire along the frame rail from the front of the vehicle to the black power wire on the T-Connector black box, connecting with another yellow butt connector. Finally, reconnect the negative battery cable and install the 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder.
Use a 15 amp fuse in the yellow fuse holder provided. Install the fuse after all wiring connections are complete and the negative battery cable has been reconnected.
Always wear safety glasses during installation. Read and follow all warnings and instructions included with the product and printed on the tow vehicle's battery before beginning. Do not exceed the product's amperage ratings or the towing manufacturer's rating stated in your vehicle's owner's manual. Avoid routing wires through hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, or points that may pinch or break the wire. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Secure all loose wires and keep the trailer tow harness in an accessible location.
After installation is complete, test and verify the installation with a test light or by connecting an actual trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the T-One® Connector to function properly. Use a test probe to verify continuity and proper signal transmission.
After all wiring is complete, reinstall the plastic trim panels, threshold, storage covers, floor covering, and any other items that were removed during installation. Be careful not to pinch or cut the wires when reinstalling these components. Secure all loose wires and mount the trailer tow harness in an accessible location with a bracket or electrical box.
The manual shows installation on a BMW X1. For other vehicles, contact the manufacturer or installer to confirm fitment before purchasing.
Trim panel remover, 10mm socket/ratchet or wrench, drill with 3/32" bit, wire crimpers, wire cutters, Phillips screwdriver, and test probe.
Yes, disconnect the negative battery cable before connecting the power wire. Reconnect only after all connections are complete and the 15 amp fuse is installed.
Drilling is optional: only if no existing ground stud is available. If you drill, use a 3/32" bit and do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed.
15 amp fuse in the yellow fuse holder provided.
Do not exceed the product's amperage ratings or your vehicle's towing manufacturer rating. Overloading circuits can cause fires. Mount the black box with epoxy side pointing down to prevent water buildup.
Verify that all connections are complete and properly seated. Check that the 15 amp fuse is installed in the fuse holder. Reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the ignition key. Test with a test light or trailer to confirm proper function. Ensure the negative battery cable is fully reconnected. If the issue persists, verify that all connector locking tabs are fully engaged on both the driver and passenger side taillight connections, and that connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt.
The black box is mounted with the epoxy side pointing upward instead of toward the ground. Remount the black box so that the epoxy side points toward the ground to prevent water buildup. This orientation is required to allow water to drain away from the module.
