Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2022-2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118856 (Part #TK118856) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The T-Connector is a wiring harness that integrates a vehicle's taillight circuits with a trailer connector system. It includes a black converter box module, yellow and green wires that connect to the vehicle's taillight connectors on both sides, a white ground wire, a black 12 ga. power wire, a 15 amp fuse holder with yellow butt connector, and a 4-flat trailer connector harness. The module converts the vehicle's taillight signals for trailer use.
The manual shows the T-Connector installed on a Mitsubishi Outlander. The manual does not specify which model years or trim levels are compatible, or whether it fits other vehicles. Contact the manufacturer or a fitment database to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle.
Required tools are: trim panel remover, utility knife, 10 mm socket and ratchet or 10 mm wrench, drill with 3/32" drill bit, 1/4" socket, wire crimpers, wire cutters, Phillips head screwdriver, and test probe.
The T-Connector kit includes: black converter box module with double-sided tape, yellow and green T-Connector wiring harness ends, white ground wire with eyelet and screw, black 12 ga. power wire, yellow fuse holder with 15 amp fuse, yellow butt connector, 4-flat trailer connector harness, and cable ties. RTV silicone for grommet sealing is optional and not supplied.
Yes. You must disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable before connecting the power wire to the positive battery terminal. This is done in step 11. After all connections are complete, you reconnect the negative battery cable and install the 15 amp fuse in step 12.
Open the tailgate and use a panel puller to carefully remove the trim covers near the taillights on each side. Remove the two Phillips head screws per side holding the taillight assembly, then carefully pull the taillight away from the vehicle without damaging the alignment pins. Pull away the grommets on both driver and passenger sides and pull the harness to expose the taillight connectors. Separate the vehicle's taillight connectors carefully without breaking the locking tabs.
For the yellow wire (driver's side): route the harness up through the opening between the vehicle bumper and body to the driver's side taillight pocket. For the green wire (passenger's side): route the harness across and underneath the vehicle behind the bumper fascia, then up through the opening on the passenger side to the passenger's side taillight pocket. The manual recommends using a fish wire between the taillight pocket and rear fascia to pull the harness through. Route wires carefully to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, or any points that may pinch or break the wire.
Insert the T-Connector end with the yellow wire between the vehicle's driver-side taillight wiring connectors and lock into place. Repeat on the passenger side with the green wire T-Connector end. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before inserting. The connectors lock into place with locking tabs.
Mount the black converter box on the driver's side on a flat surface in an out-of-the-way location using the double-sided tape provided. The epoxy side of the module must be pointed towards the ground to prevent water buildup.
Yes. You must drill one 3/32" hole to secure the white ground wire. Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector such as the vehicle's frame or crossmember. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area before drilling. Verify what is behind any surface prior to drilling to avoid damage to the vehicle and personal injury. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces.
Yes. Using a utility knife, carefully slit the grommet on each side (driver and passenger) to allow for the T-Connector wiring routing. After routing the T-Connector wiring through the slit, push all existing vehicle wiring back into the grommet hole and reseat the grommet. Optionally, RTV silicone (not supplied) can be used to re-seal the grommet slit.
The T-Connector uses a 15 amp fuse. The fuse holder is provided with the kit. You install the 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder in step 12, after all other connections are complete and the vehicle battery is reconnected.
Locate the black 12 ga. power wire from the T-Connector box on the driver's side. Route the black wire along the exterior frame or follow existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery, avoiding areas that may pinch or break the wire. After disconnecting the vehicle's negative battery cable, attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 ga. wire using the yellow butt connector provided. Reconnect the negative battery cable and install the 15 amp fuse.
The T-Connector has three main wires: yellow wire (connects to driver's side taillight connector), green wire (connects to passenger's side taillight connector), and white wire (ground wire that connects to vehicle frame or crossmember with eyelet and screw). There is also a black 12 ga. power wire that connects to the vehicle's positive battery terminal through a fuse holder.
Always wear safety glasses during installation. Read and follow all warnings and instructions included with the product and printed on the vehicle's battery before beginning. Verify what is behind any surface prior to drilling to avoid damage and personal injury. Route wires carefully to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, or any points that may pinch or break the wire. Do not drill into the vehicle floor, bed, or exposed surfaces. Ensure all connections are complete before testing. Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer rating (including in your vehicle owner's manual) or the specific amperage ratings stated on the product.
After installation is complete, test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the T-One T-Connector to function properly.
After all wiring connections are complete, secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness with the cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling, being careful to avoid any areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire. Reinstall the taillight assemblies and other items removed during installation, being careful not to pinch or cut the wires. Route the 4-flat harness underneath and to the center of the vehicle and mount the 4-flat end in an accessible location with a bracket or electrical box (not included).
Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer rating (including in your vehicle owner's manual) or the specific amperage ratings stated on the product. The manual does not specify the exact amperage rating; refer to the product label or contact the manufacturer for the specific rating. Overloading circuits can cause fires.
The manual confirms fitment for Mitsubishi Outlander. For other vehicles, contact the manufacturer or check a fitment database, as the manual does not specify other compatible models or years.
