Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The T-One® Connector is a trailer wiring harness system that integrates with your vehicle's existing taillight wiring to provide trailer lighting control. It uses a black box module mounted underneath the vehicle and connector ends that insert between the vehicle's factory taillight connectors to tap into the brake, turn, and running light circuits without cutting or permanently modifying factory wiring.
The manual shows installation on a Ford Maverick. The manual does not list other compatible vehicles, bed lengths, cab styles, or drivetrain variations. Contact the manufacturer or check the product packaging to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle before purchasing.
You will need: 8mm socket and ratchet or 8mm wrench; drill with 3/32" drill bit; wire crimpers; wire cutters; Phillips head screwdriver; and a test probe. The manual also recommends using a fish wire (not provided) to help pull the harness through the taillight pocket and bed side opening.
The kit includes: a black box module with double-sided tape for mounting; a yellow fuse holder with a 15 amp fuse; two yellow butt connectors; an eyelet and screw for the ground wire; and the harness with yellow, green, and black 12 gauge wires with connector ends. The black 12 gauge wire is used for the power circuit from the battery.
Yes. You must disconnect the vehicle's negative (−) battery cable before connecting the power circuit. This is done in step 10, after the taillight connectors are installed but before routing and connecting the black 12 gauge power wire. The battery is reconnected in step 13 after all wiring is complete.
Yes. You must open the rear tailgate and remove the 8mm bolts retaining the taillight assemblies on both the driver's and passenger's sides. Disconnect the vehicle wiring harness from both taillight assemblies carefully to avoid damaging the locking tabs. The assemblies are reinstalled at the end of the installation.
Beginning on the driver's side and underneath the vehicle, route the harness containing the yellow wire up through the opening between the bed side and frame to the driver's side taillight pocket. The manual recommends using a fish wire through the taillight pocket and bed side to pull the harness from underneath the vehicle out through the taillight pocket. Then insert the T-One® Connector end with the yellow wire between the vehicle wiring connectors and lock it into place. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt.
Route the harness with the green wire behind the rear bumper and across to the passenger's side under the taillight pocket. Then underneath the vehicle on the passenger's side, route the harness containing the green wire up through the opening between the bed side and frame to the passenger's side taillight pocket. Use a fish wire if needed to pull the harness through. Insert the T-One® Connector end with the green wire between the vehicle wiring connectors and lock it into place, ensuring all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt.
Mount the black box module underneath the vehicle below the driver's side taillight pocket using the double-sided tape provided. The epoxy side of the module must be pointed towards the ground to prevent water buildup. Ensure the mounting surface is clean before applying the tape.
Yes, you must drill one 3/32" hole to secure the white ground wire. Locate a suitable grounding point near the black box, such as an existing ground stud, or drill the hole and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area after drilling.
After disconnecting the vehicle's negative battery cable, remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder (provided). Cut the fuse holder wire and attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow butt connector (provided). Route the black 12 gauge wire from the front of the vehicle rearward along the frame rail, avoiding hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, and any points that may pinch or break the wire. Connect the other end of the black 12 gauge wire to the black power wire on the T-One® black box using the yellow butt connector (provided).
Install a 15 amp fuse into the yellow fuse holder. The fuse is installed in step 13 after all wiring connections are complete and the vehicle's negative battery cable has been reconnected.
The T-One® Connector uses three wire colors: yellow wire (driver's side taillight circuit), green wire (passenger's side taillight circuit), and black 12 gauge wire (power/battery circuit). The yellow and green wires connect to the factory taillight connectors, while the black wire connects to the vehicle's positive battery through a fused circuit.
Always wear safety glasses during installation. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into the vehicle floor, bed, or any exposed surfaces. When routing the black 12 gauge power wire, avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, and any points that may pinch or break the wire. Do not pinch or cut wires when reinstalling taillight assemblies and trim panels. Read and follow all warnings and cautions printed on the tow vehicle's battery.
After installation is complete, test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the T-One® Connector to function properly. If using a test light, probe the connector pins to verify brake, turn, and running light circuits are functioning.
Secure all loose wires and mount the trailer tow harness in an accessible location with a bracket or electrical box. This prevents wires from being pinched, cut, or damaged during vehicle operation.
The manual states that you must not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer rating (including in your vehicle owner's manual) or the specific amperage ratings stated on the product. However, the manual does not list the specific amperage rating. Check the product packaging, the black box module itself, or contact the manufacturer for the exact amperage specification.
Yes. Overloading circuits can cause fires. Do not exceed the stated product ratings or the towing manufacturer rating (whichever is lower). Read your vehicle's owner's manual and the T-One® instruction sheet for additional information on safe towing capacity.
