Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The T-One® Connector is a towing connector that integrates into your vehicle's existing taillight wiring harness. It provides a 4-flat connector outlet for trailer lighting. The system uses a T-shaped connector that splits the driver and passenger side taillight signals and routes them through a black box mounted in the cargo area, with power supplied via a 12 gauge wire connected to the vehicle's positive battery terminal through a 15 amp fuse.
The manual shows the T-One® Connector installed on a Lexus NX in the diagram. However, the manual does not provide a comprehensive list of compatible vehicles. Contact the manufacturer or check the product packaging to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle model and year.
You will need: trim panel remover, 10 mm socket or wrench, drill with 3/32" drill bit, wire crimpers, wire cutters, Phillips head screwdriver, and a test probe. The manual also recommends using a fish wire through the vent to help pull the black 12 gauge power wire from underneath the vehicle during installation.
The kit includes: two T-shaped T-Connector ends (one with yellow wire for driver side, one with green wire for passenger side), a black box, double-sided tape, cable ties, a white ground wire with eyelet and screw, a yellow fuse holder with 15 amp fuse, a black 12 gauge power wire, and two yellow butt connectors. The 4-flat connector is stored in the rear cargo area when not in use.
Yes. Step 9 requires you to disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable before connecting the power wire to the positive battery terminal. After all connections are complete and the fuse is installed, you reconnect the negative battery cable in step 13.
You must temporarily remove: the rear threshold plate, privacy screen, storage covers, and floor covering. You also need to open the rear door and fold the rear seat forward. The rear cargo hooks (removed with a 10 mm socket or wrench) must be taken off on both driver and passenger sides, and the felt side panels must be partially pulled back to expose the vehicle wiring connectors.
On the driver side, locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness connector and separate it carefully without breaking the locking tabs. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt. Insert the T-One® T-Connector end with the yellow wire between the vehicle wiring connectors and lock it into place. Repeat the same process on the passenger side with the T-Connector end containing the green wire. Be sure connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Mount the black box on the driver's side of the vehicle using the double-sided tape provided. Secure the remainder of the T-One® Connector harness with the cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling. Be careful to avoid any areas that would cut or pinch the wire.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the black box, such as an existing ground stud. If no suitable point exists, drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white ground wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury, and do not drill into any exposed surfaces. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area before securing the ground wire.
Drilling may be required. Step 6 states you should locate a suitable existing grounding point near the black box, such as an existing ground stud. If no suitable point exists, you must drill a 3/32" hole to secure the white ground wire. Before drilling, you must verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury, and you must not drill into any exposed surfaces.
Route the connector containing the green wire across the threshold and behind the passenger's side felt panel to the taillight pocket. Then insert the T-One® T-Connector end with the green wire between the vehicle wiring connectors on the passenger side and lock it into place.
After disconnecting the vehicle's negative battery cable, remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder provided. Cut the fuse holder wire and attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow butt connector provided. Route the black 12 gauge wire from the front of the vehicle rearward along the frame rail, avoiding hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, or other points that may pinch or break the wire. Route the wire through the driver's side vent in the rear cargo area and connect it to the black power wire on the T-Connector's black box using the yellow butt connector.
A 15 amp fuse is used. The fuse is installed in the yellow fuse holder provided with the kit. After all connections are complete, install the 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder in step 13.
The black power wire is 12 gauge. Beginning from the front of the vehicle, route it rearward along the frame rail, avoiding any hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, or other points that may pinch or break the wire. If routing through a grommet and along the exterior of the vehicle, continue to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, and other hazards. Locate the vent on the driver's side in the rear cargo area and route the wire through the vent from underneath the vehicle up into the cargo area.
After connecting the black 12 gauge wire to the black power wire on the T-Connector's black box using the yellow butt connector, reconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable and install the 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder. Then reinstall all plastic trim panels, threshold, floor covering, and other items that were removed during installation, being careful not to pinch or cut the wires. Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition.
After all connections are complete and the 15 amp fuse is installed, test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the T-One® Connector to function properly.
Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer's rating (including in your vehicle owner's manual) or the specific amperage ratings stated on the product. The system uses a 15 amp fuse. Overloading circuits can cause fires.
Store the 4-flat connector in the rear cargo area when not in use. When the 4-flat connector is in use, be careful not to pinch the harness in the door latch.
Always wear safety glasses and use all safety precautions during installation. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury, and do not drill into any exposed surfaces. When routing the black 12 gauge wire, avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, or other points that may pinch or break the wire. Read and follow all warnings and cautions printed on the tow vehicle's battery. Keep the installation instructions for future reference.
The manual shows installation on a Lexus NX. For confirmation of fitment on your specific vehicle model and year, contact the manufacturer or check the product packaging.
Yes, disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable before connecting the power wire to the positive terminal. Reconnect it after all wiring is complete and the 15 amp fuse is installed.
15 amp fuse, installed in the yellow fuse holder provided with the kit.
Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer's rating or the specific amperage ratings stated on the product. The system uses a 15 amp fuse. Overloading can cause fires.
The manual states that all connections must be complete for the T-One® Connector to function properly. Verify: (1) both T-Connector ends are fully inserted into the vehicle taillight harness connectors with locking tabs in place; (2) the white ground wire is securely fastened to a ground stud or drilled hole; (3) the black 12 gauge power wire is connected to the vehicle's positive battery terminal through the yellow fuse holder with the 15 amp fuse installed; (4) the other end of the black 12 gauge wire is connected to the black power wire on the T-Connector's black box using the yellow butt connector; (5) the vehicle's negative battery cable is reconnected. Test with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the ignition key.
Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before attempting to insert the T-Connector ends. Separate the vehicle's taillight harness connectors carefully without breaking the locking tabs. When inserting the T-Connector ends, be careful not to break any locking tabs and ensure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. If the connectors still will not lock, do not force them, as this may damage the locking tabs.
