Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2023-2023 Mazda CX-50, 2022-2023 Mazda CX-5 Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118871 (Part #TK118871) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The T-One® Connector is a vehicle-mounted towing connector system that provides electrical connections for trailers. It uses T-Connector ends that interface with the vehicle's existing taillight wiring harness on both driver and passenger sides, and includes a black box power distribution unit with a 15 amp fuse-protected circuit for trailer power.
The manual shows a Mazda CX-5 in the installation diagram. However, the manual does not explicitly list all compatible vehicle models. Contact the manufacturer or your retailer to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle before purchase.
Required tools are: trim panel remover, 10 mm socket or wrench, drill with 3/32" drill bit, wire crimpers, wire cutters, Phillips head screwdriver, and test probe. You will also need safety glasses.
The kit includes: two T-Connector ends (one with yellow wire for driver's side, one with green wire for passenger's side), a black box power distribution unit, double-sided tape for mounting the black box, cable ties for securing the harness, a white ground wire with eyelet and screw, a black 12 gauge power wire, a yellow fuse holder with 15 amp fuse, and two yellow butt connectors for wire connections.
Yes. Step 8 requires you to disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable before making any electrical connections. After all wiring is complete and the 15 amp fuse is installed in the fuse holder, you reconnect the negative battery cable in step 11.
You must temporarily remove: the rear threshold plate, privacy screen, storage covers, and floor covering. You also need to open the rear door, fold the rear seat forward, and partially pull back the felt side panels on both driver and passenger sides to access the vehicle wiring connectors.
On the driver's side, locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness connector, separate it carefully without breaking the locking tabs, then insert the T-One® T-Connector end with the yellow wire between the vehicle connectors and lock it in place, ensuring the locking tabs are fully engaged. Repeat the same process on the passenger's side with the T-Connector end containing the green wire.
The black box should be mounted on the driver's side using the double-sided tape provided. The manual does not specify alternative mounting locations. The remainder of the harness should be secured with cable ties provided, avoiding areas that could cut or pinch the wire.
Route the connector containing the green wire across the threshold and behind the passenger's side felt panel to the taillight pocket, then insert it between the vehicle's taillight wiring connectors and lock it in place.
Drilling may be required. Step 5 states you should locate a suitable existing ground stud near the black box, but if one is not available, you must drill a 3/32" hole to secure the white ground wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Before drilling, you must verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury, and you must not drill into any exposed surfaces.
A 3/32" drill bit is required. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury, and do not drill into any exposed surfaces.
The fuse rating is 15 amps. The yellow fuse holder is provided with the kit. After connecting the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive battery cable and the black 12 gauge wire to the fuse holder, install the 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder in step 11.
Step 8 requires: (1) disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable, (2) remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder if not already removed, (3) cut the fuse holder wire and attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable, (4) connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow butt connector provided. The black wire is then routed along the frame rail and connected to the black power wire on the T-One® black box in step 10.
The driver's side T-Connector has a yellow wire and connects to the driver's side taillight wiring harness. The passenger's side T-Connector has a green wire and connects to the passenger's side taillight wiring harness. The white wire is the ground wire, secured to a ground stud or drilled hole. The black 12 gauge wire is the power wire, connected to the vehicle's positive battery through a fuse holder.
Beginning from the front of the vehicle, route the black 12 gauge wire rearward along the frame rail. You must avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, and any other points that may pinch or break the wire. If routing the wire through a grommet and along the exterior of the vehicle, exercise the same caution to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, and pinch points.
Yellow butt connectors are provided to join the fuse holder wire to the black 12 gauge power wire, and to join the black 12 gauge wire to the black power wire on the T-One® black box. Wire crimpers are required to secure these connections.
Do not exceed the lower of two ratings: (1) the towing manufacturer's rating stated in your vehicle's owner's manual, or (2) the specific amperage ratings stated on the T-One® Connector product. Overloading circuits can cause fires.
Always wear safety glasses during installation. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into exposed surfaces. When routing wires, avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, and pinch points. Do not pinch the harness in the door latch when the 4-flat connector is in use. Read and follow all warnings printed on the tow vehicle's battery.
After installation is complete and the 15 amp fuse is installed, reconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. Test and verify the installation using a test light or by connecting a trailer. All connections must be complete for the T-One® Connector to function properly.
Reinstall all plastic trim panels, threshold, floor covering, and other items that were removed during installation, being careful not to pinch or cut the wires. Store the 4-flat connector in the rear cargo area when not in use. When the 4-flat connector is in use, be careful not to pinch the harness in the door latch.
The manual shows installation on a Mazda CX-5 but does not list all compatible vehicles. Contact the manufacturer or your retailer to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle and model year before purchase.
Yes, disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable before making any electrical connections in step 8. Reconnect it after the 15 amp fuse is installed in step 11.
The fuse rating is 15 amps. Install the 15 amp fuse into the yellow fuse holder after all wiring connections are complete.
The power wire is 12 gauge (12 ga.). It is black in color and connects from the fuse holder to the black power wire on the T-One® black box.
Do not exceed the lower of: (1) your vehicle's towing manufacturer rating (in your owner's manual), or (2) the specific amperage rating stated on the T-One® product. Overloading can cause fires.
The warning in step 11 states that all connections must be complete for the T-One® Connector to function properly. Verify: (1) the 15 amp fuse is installed in the fuse holder, (2) the negative battery cable is reconnected, (3) both T-Connector ends (yellow on driver's side, green on passenger's side) are fully inserted and locked into the vehicle's taillight harness connectors, (4) the white ground wire is securely attached to a ground point, (5) the black 12 gauge power wire is connected to both the positive battery (through the fuse holder) and the black power wire on the T-One® black box using yellow butt connectors. Reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the ignition key, then test with a test light or trailer.
Steps 3 and 7 warn to be careful not to damage the locking tabs when inserting the T-Connector ends. If the connector will not lock, check that: (1) you are inserting the correct T-Connector end (yellow wire on driver's side, green wire on passenger's side), (2) the vehicle's taillight harness connector is fully separated from the factory connector, (3) the locking tabs on both the T-Connector and the vehicle connector are not bent or damaged, (4) you are inserting the connector straight and fully until the locking tabs engage. Do not force the connection if resistance is felt.
A repeatedly blown fuse indicates an electrical overload or short circuit. The warning in step 11 states that overloading circuits can cause fires and that you must not exceed the lower of: (1) the towing manufacturer's rating in your vehicle's owner's manual, or (2) the specific amperage rating stated on the T-One® product. Check that your trailer's electrical load does not exceed these ratings. If the fuse continues to blow even with a light load, there may be a short circuit in the wiring. Verify that the black 12 gauge power wire has not been damaged during routing and that all butt connector crimps are secure and not touching metal vehicle components.
