Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Yes. Step 9 requires you to disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable before connecting the power wiring. The cable must remain disconnected until step 12, after all other connections are complete and the 15 amp fuse is installed in the fuse holder.
Open the hatch and locate the trim panels covering the tail light mounting screws. Remove the trim panels. Using a 10 mm socket or Phillips screwdriver, remove the mounting screws on both driver's and passenger's tail lights, being careful not to break the mounting tabs. Disconnect the vehicle wiring harness from both taillight sockets, being careful not to break the locking tabs, then set the taillights aside.
Starting on the driver's side and underneath the vehicle, route the harness containing the yellow wire up through the opening between the vehicle bumper and body to the driver's side taillight pocket. The manual recommends using a fish wire between the taillight pocket and rear fascia to pull the harness from underneath the vehicle out through the taillight pocket for ease of installation.
Locate the connectors matching the end of the T-One® Connector. Insert the T-One® Connector end containing the yellow wire in between the vehicle and tail light connector. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before inserting.
Underneath the vehicle, determine a suitable mounting point behind the rear bumper fascia on the driver's side. Mount the T-One® Connector black box using the double-sided tape provided. Before mounting, clean the flat mount surface area using a 50-50 mixture of rubbing alcohol and water. Mount the box so that the epoxy side of the module is pointed towards the ground to prevent water buildup.
You may need to drill a hole. Locate a suitable grounding point near the black box, such as an existing ground stud. If no existing ground point is available, drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area before securing the ground wire. Always verify what is behind any surface prior to drilling to avoid damage to the vehicle and personal injury.
Route the harness containing the green wire underneath the vehicle up through the opening between the vehicle bumper and body to the passenger's side taillight pocket. Use a fish wire between the taillight pocket and rear fascia to pull the harness from underneath the vehicle out through the taillight pocket for ease of installation. When routing the wire through a grommet and along the exterior of the vehicle, avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire.
Locate the connector matching the end of the T-One® Connector. Insert the T-One® Connector end containing the green wire in between the vehicle and tail light connector. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before inserting.
Disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable. If not already removed, remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder provided. After cutting the fuse holder wire, attach the ring terminal and secure it to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow butt connector provided. Route the black 12 gauge wire from the front of the vehicle rearward along the frame rail, avoiding hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire. Connect the other end of the black 12 gauge wire to the black power wire on the T-One® Connector's black box using the yellow butt connector provided.
Install a 15 amp fuse into the yellow fuse holder provided with the kit. This fuse is installed in step 12, after all other connections are complete and the vehicle's negative battery cable has been reconnected.
Reconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable and install the 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder. Reinstall the driver's and passenger's side tail lights using a 10 mm socket or Phillips screwdriver. Reinstall any other items that may have been removed during installation, being careful not to pinch or cut the wires. Secure all loose wires and mount the trailer tow harness in an accessible location with a bracket or electrical box.
Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the T-One® Connector to function properly.
Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer rating (including in your vehicle owner's manual) or the specific amperage ratings stated on the product. Overloading circuits can cause fires. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual and the T-One® Connector product label for the exact amperage specifications.
