Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The T-One® Connector is a vehicle wiring harness that integrates into your vehicle's taillight wiring to provide trailer lighting control. It uses a T-connector design with separate driver-side (yellow wire) and passenger-side (green wire) connections that tap into the vehicle's existing taillight connectors, plus a battery connection (black wire with fuse) to power the trailer lights.
The manual shows the T-One® Connector installed on a Tesla Model Y. However, the manual does not provide a comprehensive list of compatible vehicles, model years, cab styles, bed lengths, or drivetrain types. Contact the manufacturer or consult a fitment database to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle before purchasing.
Required tools are: trim panel remover, 10 mm socket and ratchet or 10 mm wrench, drill with 3/32" drill bit, wire crimpers, wire cutters, Phillips head screwdriver, and test probe. You will also need safety glasses.
The kit includes: double-sided tape for mounting the black box, cable ties for securing the harness, a white wire with eyelet and screw for grounding, a yellow fuse holder with 15 amp fuse, a yellow butt connector for connecting the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire, and a ring terminal for the battery connection. The connector ends with yellow and green wires are pre-assembled.
Yes. Step 7 requires you to disconnect the vehicle's negative (−) battery cable before making the battery connection. If the fuse has not already been removed from the yellow fuse holder, remove it before working on the battery connection. Reconnect the negative battery cable and install the 15 amp fuse in step 10 after all other connections are complete.
You must partially remove the plastic threshold cover, side panels, and cargo trays from the rear cargo area to expose the vehicle's taillight wiring harness. The manual also requires removal of a cover to access the battery T-One power connection point. Reinstall all trim panels, threshold, storage covers, and floor covering after installation, being careful not to pinch or cut the wires.
On the driver's side, insert the T-One® Connector end with the yellow wire between the vehicle's taillight wiring connectors and lock into place. Be careful not to damage the locking tabs and ensure connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs engaged. Repeat on the passenger's side with the T-One® Connector end with the green wire. Route the green wire end to the passenger's side behind the panels and along the threshold to the taillight pocket before inserting.
Mount the black box on the driver's side using the double-sided tape provided. Secure the remainder of the T-One® Connector harness with the cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling. Be careful to avoid any areas that would cut or pinch the wire.
Drilling may be required for the ground connection. You must locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing ground stud. If no existing ground stud is available, drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Always verify what is behind any surface prior to drilling to avoid damage to the vehicle and personal injury.
Use a 3/32" drill bit to create the ground connection hole, if required. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area before securing the white wire with the eyelet and screw provided.
After disconnecting the vehicle's negative (−) battery cable, cut the fuse holder wire and attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow butt connector provided. Route the black wire through a grommet and along the exterior frame, or follow existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery, avoiding areas that may pinch or break the wire. Reconnect the negative battery cable and install the 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder.
The fuse rating is 15 amperes. The yellow fuse holder is provided with the kit. Install the 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder after all other connections are complete and the vehicle's negative battery cable has been reconnected.
Yellow wire: driver-side taillight connector. Green wire: passenger-side taillight connector. White wire: ground connection (eyelet and screw to existing ground stud or drilled hole). Black wire: battery positive connection (12 gauge, with 15 amp fuse). The manual also warns never to cut into or attach any power wire or device to the high power orange line, cables or connectors.
Route the black wire through a grommet and along the exterior frame, or follow the existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery. Avoid areas that may pinch or break the wire. The wire must reach from the connector location to the vehicle's positive (+) battery terminal.
Never cut into or attach any power wire or device to the high power orange line, cables or connectors. Serious injury can result. This warning appears multiple times in the manual and applies throughout the installation process.
Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle and personal injury. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Always wear safety glasses during installation.
Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer rating (including in your vehicle owner's manual) or the specific amperage ratings stated on the product. Overloading circuits can cause fires. The product uses a 15 amp fuse, which is the maximum circuit protection provided.
All connections must be complete for the T-One® Connector to function properly. Test and verify installation with a test light or trailer once installed. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. Use a test probe to verify proper operation of the connector ends.
After reinstalling the plastic trim panels, threshold, storage covers, floor covering and other items removed during installation, verify that no wires have been pinched or cut. Ensure the 4-flat connector is routed through the driver's side trim panel into the storage compartment on the threshold for storage when not in use. Test the installation with a test light or trailer to confirm proper operation.
Route the 4-flat connector through the driver's side trim panel into the storage compartment on the threshold and store it there when not in use.
The manual shows installation on a Tesla Model Y but does not provide a complete compatibility list. Contact the manufacturer or check a fitment database to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle before purchasing.
Yes, disconnect the vehicle's negative (−) battery cable before making the battery connection in step 7. Reconnect it after all connections are complete and the 15 amp fuse is installed.
15 amperes. The yellow fuse holder with a 15 amp fuse is provided and must be installed in the battery circuit.
Never cut into or attach any power wire or device to the high power orange line, cables or connectors—serious injury can result. Always wear safety glasses and verify what is behind any surface before drilling.
