Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The T-One® Connector (part number 118882) is a trailer wiring module that integrates with your vehicle's taillight system to provide trailer lighting control. It connects to both driver's and passenger's side taillights and includes a 4-Flat connector for trailer hookup. The module must have all connections complete to function properly and should be tested with a test light or trailer after installation.
Required tools include: safety glasses, Phillips screwdriver, wire stripper, wire crimper, 14 mm socket, ratchet, drill with 3/32" drill bit, fish wire, heat gun, and test light. The hardware kit includes Perma Seal butt connectors, ring terminals, #8 screws, 15 Amp fuse, fuse holder, double-sided tape, wire ties (14.5" and 8.5"), and a trim panel tool. A 10 mm socket is also needed for taillight mounting screw removal.
Yes. You must locate the vehicle's battery, disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable before beginning installation. The negative cable must be disconnected again in step 11 before connecting the power wire to the positive battery terminal. After all wiring connections are complete, reconnect the negative battery cable and install the 15 Amp fuse.
The installation sequence is: (1) disconnect negative battery cable; (2) remove taillight covers and mounting screws on both sides; (3) disconnect taillight wiring connectors; (4) route yellow wire harness to driver's side taillight pocket and insert T-One® connector; (5) remove environmental cover under vehicle; (6) mount black box using double-sided tape behind rear bumper fascia on driver's side; (7) ground white wire to nearby stud or drill 3/32" hole; (8) route green wire to passenger's side taillight pocket and insert T-One® connector; (9) connect fuse holder to positive battery terminal with ring terminal; (10) route black 12 ga. wire from front along frame rail to module; (11) connect black wire to module power wire using heat shrink connector; (12) reconnect negative battery cable and install 15 Amp fuse; (13) reinstall taillights; (14) test with test light or trailer.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill a 3/32" hole to secure the white ground wire using the eyelet and screw provided. The manual specifies: do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed, do not drill into any exposed surfaces, and verify what is behind any surface prior to drilling to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. If an existing ground stud is available near the black box, you may use that instead of drilling.
The T-One® Connector uses four wire colors: yellow wire connects to the driver's side taillight connector; green wire connects to the passenger's side taillight connector; white wire is the ground wire, secured to a ground stud or drilled hole near the black box; black 12 ga. wire connects from the positive battery terminal (via fuse holder and ring terminal) to the black power wire on the module's black box. All connections use yellow heat shrink butt connectors and must be heated with a heat gun until the tubing shrinks and sealant flows.
The fuse rating is 15 Amp. The fuse is installed in the yellow fuse holder provided in the hardware kit. The fuse must be removed before connecting the power wire to the positive battery terminal (step 11) and reinstalled after the negative battery cable is reconnected (step 15). The fuse should have no breaks and must be fully inserted into the fuse holder.
The black power wire is 12 gauge (12 ga.). It routes from the front of the vehicle along the frame rail to the module's black box, where it connects to the black power wire on the module using a yellow heat shrink butt connector. The wire must be routed to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire.
Mount the black box using the double-sided tape provided. Select a suitable mounting point behind the rear bumper fascia on the driver's side, underneath the vehicle. Before mounting, clean the flat mount surface area using a 50-50 mixture of rubbing alcohol and water. Ensure the epoxy side of the module is pointed towards the ground to prevent water buildup.
After routing the harness to each taillight pocket, locate the connectors matching the end of the T-One® Connector. Insert the T-One® Connector end containing the yellow wire between the vehicle and driver's side taillight connector. Repeat for the passenger's side with the green wire. All connector surfaces must be clean and free of dirt before insertion. The connectors should be fully inserted and locked in place.
For the driver's side (yellow wire): beginning underneath the vehicle, route the harness up through the opening between the vehicle bumper and body to the driver's side taillight pocket. For the passenger's side (green wire): route down and underneath the vehicle, then up through the opening between the bumper and body to the passenger's side taillight pocket. The manual recommends using a fish wire between the taillight pocket and rear fascia to pull the harness through. Route the harness between the body and fascia, avoiding hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any points that may pinch or break the wire.
Use a heat gun to heat the yellow heat shrink butt connectors. Start heating in the center of the splice connector, then heat from the center out to the edges on each end until the tubing shrinks and sealant flows. Allow the connector to cool before inspecting the splice. This procedure applies to both the connection at the fuse holder (step 11) and the connection at the module power wire (step 14).
After installation is complete, test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the T-One® Connector to function properly. If the 4-Way connector is not functioning, refer to the troubleshooting guide to check that T-One® Connector ends are fully inserted and locked, remove the module's power fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test.
Always wear safety glasses during installation. Do not touch the negative battery terminal to the positive battery terminal, as serious injury and damage to the vehicle's electrical system can occur. Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturing rating (including in your vehicle owner's manual) or the specific amperage ratings stated on the product. Do not exceed stated product ratings. Read and follow all warnings and cautions printed on the tow vehicle's battery. Verify what is behind any surface prior to drilling to avoid damage to the vehicle and personal injury. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces. If routing wire through a grommet and along the exterior of the vehicle, avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire.
If your vehicle is equipped with the Start/Stop option, do not connect the module power wire to the support battery. Only connect the module to the main vehicle battery. Failure to connect to the vehicle main battery may result in damage.
Perform a pre-trip inspection of the 4-Way Flat harness to ensure no damage to terminals and connection points for proper lighting connection and operation. Clean the 4-Way Flat connector after each use. Clean the connection and add dielectric grease (sold separately) to the terminal pins. Ensure the 4-Way Flat harness does not get pinched in door latches, trailer connection points, or allow contact with the road surface.
The T-One® Connector is covered by a limited 1-year warranty from Horizon Global. The warranty covers material defects in both material and workmanship, provided installation and use are in accordance with product instructions. Route the 4-Flat harness underneath and to the center of the vehicle. Mount the 4-Flat end in an accessible location with a bracket or electrical box. Note that the bracket or electrical box is not included with the product and must be sourced separately.
Open the rear hatch and locate the plastic mount covers covering the taillight mounting screws. Using a trim panel tool or screwdriver, carefully remove the covers, being careful not to break the mounting tabs. Using a Phillips screwdriver or 10 mm socket, remove the mounting screws on both driver's side and passenger's side (3 per side). Carefully pull the taillight away from the vehicle, exposing the vehicle's taillight wiring harness. Repeat the process for the passenger's side.
Locate the taillight wiring connectors on both driver's side and passenger's side. Disconnect the vehicle wiring harness from both taillight sockets, being careful not to break the locking tabs. Set the taillights aside.
Underneath the vehicle on the driver's side, locate the black environmental cover. Using a trim panel tool, remove the 4 plastic clips, being careful not to damage them. Locate the 2 plastic retaining nuts. Using a 14 mm socket, remove the plastic nuts and set the cover aside.
After cutting the fuse holder wire, attach the ring terminal and secure it to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 ga. wire using the yellow heat shrink butt connector provided. Heat the connector with a heat gun, starting in the center and heating from center to edges until the tubing shrinks and sealant flows. Allow to cool before inspecting.
Beginning from the front of the vehicle, route the black 12 ga. wire rearward along the frame rail, avoiding any hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire. If routing the wire through a grommet and along the exterior of the vehicle, be careful to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire.
Connect the other end of the black 12 ga. wire to the black power wire located on the T-One® Connector's black box using the yellow heat shrink butt connector provided. Heat the connector with a heat gun, starting in the center of the splice connector and heating from center to edges on each end until the tubing shrinks and sealant flows. Allow to cool before inspecting the splice.
Reinstall the driver's and passenger's side taillights using a Phillips screwdriver or 10 mm socket. Reinstall any other items that may have been removed during installation, being careful not to pinch or cut the wires.
