Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. The system includes a fused power supply that draws from the vehicle's battery.

Open the tailgate and remove the right side taillight assembly first by removing the two clips holding it in place. Carefully pry the housing away from the vehicle, being careful not to break the alignment tabs. Repeat the same process for the left side taillight assembly. Then slide the red locking tab on the vehicle wiring harness connectors to the unlocked position and disconnect the vehicle wiring harness from both taillight sockets.
The T-Connector end with the yellow wire plugs in between the mating plugs on the driver's side taillight socket and vehicle wiring harness. This allows the T-Connector to tap into the driver's side taillight circuit.
On the driver's side, route the T-Connector end with the green wire and the wire with the 4-flat connector down through the opening between the vehicle bumper and body. Route the T-Connector end with green wire to the passenger's side and route the 4-flat connector underneath the bumper. Route the T-Connector end with green wire up through the opening on the passenger side. Avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire. Repeat the connection for the passenger side T-Connector end with the green wire.
The T-Connector uses a 10 amp fuse. The fuse is installed in the yellow fuse holder provided with the kit. The fuse must be removed before cutting the fuse holder wire during installation (step 5) and reinstalled after all connections are complete (step 8).
Disconnect the vehicle's negative (−) battery cable. Remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder. Cut the fuse holder wire and attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow butt connector provided. This creates a fused power supply from the battery to the T-Connector system.
Beginning from the front of the vehicle, route the black 12 gauge wire rearward along the frame rail, avoiding hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire. Continue to the rear driver's side. Locate the opening between the vehicle rear bumper and body and route the wire up through this hole. Attach the black 12 gauge wire to the red wire from the T-Connector black box using the supplied yellow butt connector.
Mount the T-Connector black box behind the taillight assembly on the driver's side. Clean a flat area using a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water, then mount the black box using the double-sided tape provided. Ensure all wiring is secured before reinstalling the taillight housing.
Mount the 4-flat connector in a suitable location under the vehicle. The manual does not provide a specific mounting location or bracket. A bracket is not included with the kit, so you will need to source an appropriate mounting solution separately.
Secure all loose wiring before reinstalling the taillight assemblies. When reinstalling the taillight housing, position the vehicle wiring harness between the housing and the vehicle body. Secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness under the bumper with the cable ties provided, being careful to avoid any areas that would cut or pinch the wire.
