Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The kit includes a 10-Pin Tow Plug Adapter, a 4-Pin Tow Plug Adapter, a black converter box, supplied fuse holders with wires, double-sided tape or a 14" cable tie for mounting, and a 4-Flat connector for storage in the spare tire compartment when not in use.
No tools are required for installation. The installation uses only hand-tightening of connectors and mounting with supplied double-sided tape or cable tie.
The grey 10-Pin housing is located underneath the dash and to the left of the steering column. It is taped to another harness with blue tape and is accessed by removing the access panel underneath the steering wheel.
Turn the locking knobs 90 degrees counter-clockwise to remove the access panel underneath the steering wheel.
The factory 4-Pin tow harness connector is mounted on the driver's side threshold. It is accessed by opening the rear tailgate and removing cargo nets and the cargo floor hatch to reach the spare tire area.
Check that the mating surfaces of the vehicle harness connectors match the Tow Plug Adapter end. All connector surfaces should be clean and free of dirt before insertion.
Mount the black converter box up under the dash using either the supplied double-sided tape or a 14" cable tie. Position it to prevent damage or rattling, and carefully avoid any areas that would cut or pinch the wire.
If the fuses have not already been removed, remove them from the supplied fuse holders on the wires going from the T-Connector's 10-Pin Tow Plug Adapter to the black converter box before inserting the 10-Pin Tow Plug Adapter. Replace these fuses in step 7 after repositioning all access panels and trays.
Insert the 10-Pin Tow Plug Adapter into the grey 10-Pin housing and lock it into place. Be careful not to damage the locking tabs and ensure that the connector is fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Insert the 4-Pin Tow Plug Adapter into the factory 4-Pin tow harness connector on the threshold and lock it into place. Be careful not to damage the locking tabs and ensure that the connector is fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Wear safety glasses during installation. Use all safety precautions. Avoid cutting or pinching wires when mounting the converter box. Be careful not to damage connector locking tabs during insertion.
Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly.
Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer rating or: maximum stop/turn light of 1 per side (2.1 amps) or maximum tail lights of 5.6 amps. Overloading the circuit can cause fires.
