Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2010-2023 Ford Mustang Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118487 (Part #TK118487) fits 2010-2023 Ford Mustang models. The 2023 model year is the last year covered by this part number. For newer models, check for an updated version.
The 2010-2023 Ford Mustang Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118487 (Part #TK118487) fits the following vehicles: 2010-2023 Ford Mustang. Always verify your specific year, make, and model before ordering.
The 2010-2023 Ford Mustang Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118487 (Part #TK118487) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The T-Connector is a wiring adapter that allows you to connect a trailer to your vehicle's electrical system. It taps into the vehicle's existing taillight wiring at the rear cargo area and routes power to a 4-flat connector for trailer use. The system includes a black box (control module), T-Connector adapters for each taillight, a fuse holder with 10 amp fuse, and wiring harness with cable ties.
Yes, this T-Connector is designed for the Ford Mustang. However, the manual does not specify which model years or generations are compatible. Contact the manufacturer or your installer to confirm fitment for your specific Mustang year and body style.
You will need: a Trim Panel Remover, a 10mm Socket & Ratchet or 10mm Wrench, a Drill with a 3/32" Drill Bit, and a Test-probe. These tools are required to remove the threshold cover, disconnect fasteners, drill the ground point (if needed), and test the installation.
The kit includes: two T-Connector adapters (one with yellow wire for driver's side, one with green wire for passenger's side), a black control box, a yellow fuse holder with 10 amp fuse, yellow butt connectors, a white eyelet and screw for grounding, double-sided tape for mounting the black box, and cable ties for securing the harness.
Yes. You must disconnect the vehicle's Negative (−) battery cable before connecting the fuse holder to the Positive (+) battery cable. The battery remains disconnected until step 9, when you reconnect the Negative cable after the fuse is installed in the fuse holder.
The vehicle wiring connectors are located inside the rear cargo area, behind the taillights. Access them by partially removing the plastic threshold cover and felt trunk liner. Behind each taillight housing, you will find connection points that match the ends of the T-Connector adapters.
Remove the top fasteners holding the threshold cover by rotating them 90° and gently pulling out on each fastener until it releases. This allows you to partially remove the plastic threshold cover and felt trunk liner to access the vehicle wiring connectors behind the taillights.
Install the T-Connector adapters in this order: (1) On the driver's side, insert the T-Connector end with the yellow wire between the vehicle wiring connectors and lock into place. (2) Route the T-Connector containing the green wire below the threshold cover to the passenger's side taillight housing. (3) Repeat the insertion and locking process on the passenger's side using the green-wire T-Connector. Ensure all locking tabs are fully engaged and connectors are fully inserted.
From inside the trunk, connect the black 12 gauge wire and the red wire from the T-Connector black box together using the supplied yellow butt connector. This connection is made before routing the wires to the battery.
You have two routing options: (1) Route the black wire through a grommet and along the exterior frame, or (2) Follow the existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery. Either way, avoid areas that may pinch or break the wire, hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that could damage the wire.
Drilling may be required only for the ground point. If a suitable existing ground stud is not available near the taillight connector, you must drill a 3/32" hole to secure the white ground wire. You must not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces.
Use a 3/32" drill bit to create the ground hole, if an existing ground stud is not available. The white ground wire is then secured using the supplied eyelet and screw.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the taillight connector, such as an existing ground stud. If one is not available, drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area before securing. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed.
The T-Connector uses a 10 amp fuse. The fuse is installed in the yellow fuse holder provided in the kit. Install the fuse in step 9, after reconnecting the vehicle's Negative battery cable.
After disconnecting the Negative battery cable, remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder if it is installed. Cut the fuse holder wire, attach the ring terminal to the cut end, and secure it to the vehicle's Positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the supplied yellow butt connector. Reconnect the Negative battery cable and install the 10 amp fuse into the fuse holder.
The T-Connector uses the following wire colors: Yellow wire (driver's side taillight connection), Green wire (passenger's side taillight connection), Black wire (12 gauge, power from battery through fuse), Red wire (from black box, connected to black wire via yellow butt connector), and White wire (ground connection to vehicle frame or drilled ground point).
Mount the T-Connector black box on the driver's side floor of the rear cargo area using the double-sided tape provided. Before mounting, clean a flat area using a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water to ensure proper adhesion. The black box should be secured before replacing the trunk threshold and felt trunk liner.
Secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness using the cable ties provided. Route the harness carefully to prevent damage or rattling, and avoid any areas that would cut or pinch the wire. This prevents the harness from moving or being damaged during vehicle operation.
Do not exceed the lower of your towing manufacturer's rating or these limits: Maximum stop/turn light: 1 per side (2.1 amps); Maximum tail lights: 5.6 amps. Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual and instruction sheet for additional information about your specific towing capacity.
After installation is complete, test and verify the installation using a test light or by connecting a trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly. If the lights do not work, check that all connectors are fully seated and locked, and that the 10 amp fuse is installed.
Store the 4-flat connector in the rear cargo area of the vehicle when not in use.
Yes. Before connecting the T-Connector adapters, check that the mating surfaces of the vehicle wiring connectors match the T-Connector ends. All connector surfaces should be clean and free of dirt to ensure proper electrical contact.
Be careful not to damage the locking tabs when inserting the T-Connector adapters. Ensure that connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. If you encounter resistance, do not force the connector; verify that the mating surfaces are clean and that you are inserting the correct T-Connector end (yellow wire for driver's side, green wire for passenger's side) into the correct taillight connector.
Yes, the T-Connector (118487-037) is designed for the Ford Mustang. Confirm your specific model year with the manufacturer or installer.
Yes, disconnect the Negative battery cable before connecting the fuse holder to the Positive cable. Reconnect it after the 10 amp fuse is installed.
The T-Connector uses a 10 amp fuse installed in the yellow fuse holder.
Maximum 2.1 amps per stop/turn light (1 per side) and 5.6 amps for tail lights. Do not exceed the lower of your towing manufacturer's rating or these limits.
Test using a test light or trailer after installation. Reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the ignition key. All connections must be complete for proper function.
Verify that all connections are complete and secure. Check that: (1) Both T-Connector adapters are fully inserted and locked into the vehicle taillight connectors with locking tabs engaged; (2) The connector mating surfaces are clean and free of dirt; (3) The black and red wires from the black box are connected together with the yellow butt connector; (4) The fuse holder is properly connected to the Positive battery cable with the ring terminal; (5) The 10 amp fuse is installed in the fuse holder; (6) The Negative battery cable is reconnected. Reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the ignition key and test again.
Ensure that the connector mating surfaces are clean and free of dirt. Verify that you are inserting the correct T-Connector end: the yellow-wire connector goes on the driver's side, and the green-wire connector goes on the passenger's side. Do not force the connector; insert it gently and ensure the locking tabs engage fully. If the connector still does not fit, the vehicle connector may be damaged or the T-Connector may not be compatible with your vehicle.
