Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.

Inside the vehicle's rear cargo area, you must temporarily remove all floor coverings, cargo trays, and the plastic threshold cover to access the driver-side trim panel and seat grommet. Do not remove the vehicle's side trim panels, as this could break the clips that hold them to the vehicle.
Open the tailgate and carefully pull each taillight assembly away from the vehicle to expose the vehicle wiring harness connectors in the pocket behind the taillight. Disconnect the vehicle wiring harness from both taillight sockets. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before proceeding.
Locate the grommet under the vehicle on the driver's side and remove it. Use fish tape to pull both T-connector ends and the power wire through the grommet hole from inside the vehicle, behind the driver-side trim panel and seat grommet. Route the yellow/brown T-connector end up into the driver-side taillight pocket. Route the green/red T-connector end over the bumper bracket, across the bumper, and into the passenger-side taillight pocket. Cable tie the harness to the bumper, avoiding hot pipes, heat shields, and areas that may damage the wire.
Some vehicles have a wire passing through the existing grommet. Unseat this grommet and leave it attached. Carefully slit the provided T-Connector's grommet as shown in the manual to allow the existing vehicle wire to pass through. Add silicone rubber (not provided) to seal the grommet.
Starting on the driver's side, plug the T-Connector harness containing the yellow wire in between the vehicle's mating connectors. Ensure that the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Repeat this process on the passenger's side using the T-Connector containing the green wire.
Remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder (provided). After cutting the fuse holder wire, attach the ring terminal and secure it to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 ga. wire using the yellow butt connector (provided). Beginning from the front of the vehicle, route the black 12 ga. wire rearward along the frame rail, avoiding hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, and any other points that may pinch or break the wire.
Locate the red 12-volt power wire under the vehicle exiting the grommet. Using the butt connector provided, connect the black wire to the red 12-volt wire. Apply heat directly to the splice, working from the center out to the edges, using a hot air gun or other heat source, until the tubing recovers and the adhesive flows. This activates the adhesive in the heat-shrink butt connector.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing ground stud. If no existing ground stud is available, drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area before securing. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed.
Drilling is required only if no existing ground stud is available near the connector. If you must drill, you will need to drill a single 3/32" hole for the ground wire. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle and/or personal injury. Do not drill into the vehicle floor, bed, or any exposed surfaces.

Do not exceed the lower of your vehicle manufacturer's rating or these limits. If the load is within limits, there may be a short circuit in the wiring or connectors that must be investigated before replacing the fuse.
