Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Mount the black converter box on the driver's side of the vehicle on a flat surface in an out-of-the-way location using the double-sided tape provided.
On the driver's side, locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness in the trunk. Separate the connectors carefully without breaking the locking tabs. Insert the T-Connector end with the yellow wire between the vehicle's wiring connectors and lock into place, ensuring connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs engaged. Repeat this process on the passenger's side using the T-Connector end with the green wire, routing it under the felt trunk liner.
From the T-Connector black box, connect the red 12 gauge power wire with the supplied black 12 gauge wire using a yellow butt connector. Route the black wire either through a grommet and along the exterior frame, or follow existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery. Avoid areas that may pinch or break the wire, hot pipes, heat shields, and the fuel tank.
Drilling is required only if you choose Option 2 for grounding. If you use the existing ground stud near the tow plug connector (Option 1), no drilling is needed. If you choose Option 2, drill a 3/32" hole in a suitable grounding point near the adapter, such as the vehicle frame or crossmember. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed.
Option 1: Locate the existing ground stud near the tow plug connector, loosen the nut, place the T-Connector white wire with ring terminal on the stud, and retighten the nut, ensuring all existing ground connections remain attached. Option 2: Locate a suitable grounding point near the adapter such as the vehicle frame or crossmember (do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed), clean dirt and rustproofing from the area, drill a 3/32" hole, and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided.
Install a 10 amp fuse into the yellow fuse holder provided. This fuse protects the circuit and must be installed after the fuse holder is connected to the positive battery terminal and before the negative battery cable is reconnected.
Disconnect the vehicle's negative (−) battery cable. Locate the red 12 gauge power wire from the T-Connector black box and attach the supplied black 12 gauge wire. Connect the black wire and red wire from the T-Connector black box using the supplied yellow butt connector. Route the black wire to the battery through a grommet and exterior frame or along existing wiring. Cut the fuse holder wire, attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable, and connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow butt connector. Install the 10 amp fuse and reconnect the negative battery cable.
Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer's rating or: maximum 1 stop/turn light per side (2.1 amps) and maximum tail lights (5.6 amps). Overloading the circuit can cause fires.
After installation is complete, test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly.
Open the trunk and remove the threshold panel. Partially remove the corner felt trunk liner on both sides to expose the vehicle's taillight wiring harness. Remove the plastic trim fasteners securing the protective cover to access the vehicle's wiring harness.
Secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness with the cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling. Be careful to avoid any areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire. When reinstalling the felt trunk liner and threshold, be careful not to pinch or cut the wires.
Store the 4-flat connector in the spare tire compartment when not in use.
