Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2007-2015 Mazda CX-9, 2006-2010 Mazda 5, 2011-2014 Mazda 2, 2012-2015 Mazda 5 Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118520 (Part #TK118520) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Yes, the T-Connector 118520-037 is designed for Mazda CX-9, Mazda 2, and Mazda 5 vehicles. The installation instructions include vehicle-specific steps for locating the taillight wiring harness on each model (h-1 for CX-9, h-2 for Mazda 2, h-3 for Mazda 5).
The T-Connector is a wiring interface that connects to the vehicle's taillight harness to enable trailer lighting control. It includes a converter box, multiple connector ends with different wire colours (yellow, brown, green), a 4-flat connector for the trailer plug, and power/ground wiring to the vehicle battery.
Required tools are: test-probe, trim panel puller, drill with 3/32" drill bit, 10 mm socket, ratchet, wire cutter, wire crimper, and Phillips head screwdriver.
The T-Connector includes: the connector assembly with yellow, brown, and green wire ends; a black converter box; a 4-flat connector; a red 12 gauge power wire; a black 12 gauge wire; a white ground wire with eyelet and screw; a yellow fuse holder with 10 amp fuse; a yellow butt connector; cable ties; and double-sided tape for mounting the converter box.
Yes. You must disconnect the vehicle's negative (−) battery cable before connecting the power wiring. The negative cable is reconnected in Step 11 after the fuse holder and connections are complete.
Open the rear door and fold the rear seat forward. Remove the threshold, trunk floor panels, and trays. On both sides of the vehicle, remove cargo loops and Phillips head screws so the trim panels can be carefully pulled away. Set aside all removed items carefully to avoid damage.
On the driver's side, locate the vehicle's taillight wiring harness (location varies by model: h-1 for CX-9, h-2 for Mazda 2, h-3 for Mazda 5). Separate the connectors carefully without breaking the locking tabs. Verify that the mating surfaces match the T-Connector ends and are clean and free of dirt. Attach the T-Connector end containing yellow and brown wires first, ensuring connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Then route the T-Connector containing the green wire below the threshold cover to the passenger's side taillight housing and repeat the connection process.
Route the 4-flat connector through the driver's side trim panel into the storage compartment on the threshold and store it there when not in use. When in use, pull the 4-flat connector through the door.
On the driver's side, locate a flat surface in an out-of-the-way place and mount the T-Connector's black converter box using the double-sided tape provided.
Yes. A 3/32" hole must be drilled to secure the white ground wire. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed, and do not drill any exposed surfaces. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area before drilling.
A 3/32" drill bit is required to drill the hole for securing the white ground wire with the eyelet and screw provided.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as the vehicle's frame or cross member. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area. Drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided.
Locate the red 12 gauge power wire from the T-Connector box on the driver's side and attach the black 12 gauge wire provided. Route the black wire either through a grommet and along the exterior frame, or follow existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery, avoiding areas that may pinch or break the wire. Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable. Remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder if not already removed. Cut the fuse holder wire and attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow butt connector provided.
A 10 amp fuse is installed in the yellow fuse holder provided with the T-Connector.
The T-Connector uses yellow and brown wires for the driver's side taillight connection, and a green wire for the passenger's side taillight connection. A red 12 gauge wire provides power from the converter box, a black 12 gauge wire connects to the vehicle battery positive terminal, and a white wire provides the ground connection.
Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer rating or: maximum 1 stop/turn light per side (2.1 amps), and maximum tail lights (5.6 amps). Overloading the circuit can cause fires.
All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly. Test and verify installation with a test light or trailer once installed. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition.
Secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness with the cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling. Be careful to avoid any areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire. Reinstall the plastic trim panels, threshold, storage covers, floor covering, and other items removed during installation, being careful not to pinch or cut the wires.
Wear safety glasses and use all safety precautions during installation. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle and personal injury. Do not drill into the vehicle floor, bed, or exposed surfaces. Be careful not to pinch the harness in the door latch. If routing the black power wire through a grommet and along the exterior of the vehicle, avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire. Read and follow all warnings and cautions printed on the tow vehicle's battery.
You may either route the black wire through a grommet and along the exterior frame, or follow the existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery. Both routes must avoid areas that may pinch or break the wire. If using the exterior route, be careful to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire.
