Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The T-Connector is a wiring harness that integrates trailer lighting into your vehicle's electrical system. It allows you to connect a trailer's lights to your Ford Focus 5Dr. Hatch's taillight circuits without permanently modifying the vehicle's factory wiring. The system uses a black converter box and a 4-flat connector that can be stored when not in use.
The T-Connector (part number 118549-037) is designed for the Ford Focus 5Dr. Hatch. The manual does not specify compatibility with other Focus body styles (sedan, wagon) or model years. Verify your vehicle matches this specification before purchasing.
You will need: trim panel remover, drill with 3/32" drill bit, wire crimpers, wire cutters, test probe, and Phillips head screwdriver. These tools are required to remove taillight housings, route wiring, drill the grounding hole, and make electrical connections.
The kit includes: T-Connector harness with yellow, brown, green, and red wires; black converter box; 4-flat connector; yellow fuse holder; 10 amp fuse; yellow butt connector; white wire with eyelet and screw for grounding; black 12 ga. wire; ring terminal; and cable ties for securing the harness.
Yes. You must disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable before beginning installation. This is a safety requirement when working with the vehicle's electrical system. Reconnect the negative cable only after the fuse holder and all wiring connections are complete (Step 10).
Open the tailgate and remove the taillight housing assemblies. On the driver's side, inside the vehicle behind the taillights, remove the plastic cover and pull back the insulation liner to access the plastic wing nut holding the taillight in place. Unscrew the wing nut and carefully pry the taillight housing away from the vehicle, being careful not to break the alignment tabs. Separate the vehicle's plugs. Repeat for the passenger's side.
On both sides, slit the grommet to allow the T-Connector wiring through. Route the T-Connector end with the yellow wire through the hole into the tail lamp pocket and reseat the grommet around the wires. Insert the T-Connector end with the yellow wire between the vehicle wiring connectors and lock into place. Repeat with the green and red wires on the passenger's side, routing below the threshold cover. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and locking tabs are fully engaged.
Mount the black converter box on the driver's side in a flat, out-of-the-way location using the double-sided tape provided. Choose a spot that will not interfere with vehicle operation or be easily damaged.
Yes. You must drill one 3/32" hole to create a grounding point for the white wire. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces. Secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided.
Locate the red 12 ga. power wire from the T-Connector box on the driver's side and attach the black 12 ga. wire provided. Route the black wire either through a grommet along the exterior frame or along existing wiring through the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery, avoiding areas that may pinch or break the wire. Disconnect the negative battery cable, cut the fuse holder wire, attach the ring terminal to the positive battery cable, and connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 ga. wire using the yellow butt connector. Reconnect the negative cable and install the 10 amp fuse.
The T-Connector uses a 10 amp fuse. This fuse is installed in the yellow fuse holder provided and must be in place for the system to function properly.
The T-Connector uses the following wire colours: yellow (driver's side taillight connection), brown (driver's side taillight connection), green (passenger's side taillight connection), red (passenger's side taillight connection), white (ground wire), and black (power wire to battery). Each colour corresponds to a specific circuit in the vehicle's taillight system.
Do not exceed the lower of your towing manufacturer's rating or: maximum stop/turn light of 1 per side (2.1 amps) or maximum tail lights of 5.6 amps. Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual and the instruction sheet for additional information about your specific towing capacity.
Wear safety glasses and use all safety precautions during installation. Disconnect the negative battery cable before working with electrical connections. Verify what is behind any surface before drilling to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into exposed surfaces. When routing the black power wire, avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, and other points that may pinch or break the wire. Do not pinch the harness in the trunk latch. Secure all wiring with cable ties to prevent damage or rattling.
All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly. Test and verify installation with a test light or trailer once installed. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. This ensures all connections are working correctly before towing.
Route the 4-flat connector through the driver's side trim panel into the side storage compartment and store it there when not in use. This keeps the connector protected and organized when you are not towing.
Secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness with the cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling. Be careful to avoid any areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire. After securing the harness, reinstall all plastic trim panels, threshold, storage covers, floor covering, and other items removed during installation, being careful not to pinch or cut the wires.
Route the black 12 ga. power wire either through a grommet along the exterior frame or along existing wiring through the thresholds into the engine compartment. Avoid areas that may pinch or break the wire. If routing through a grommet along the exterior, carefully avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire. Choose the routing path that best protects the wire from damage.
Before inserting the T-Connector, ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt. Be careful not to damage the locking tabs. When inserting, make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. This ensures a secure connection and proper function of the taillight circuits.
The T-Connector (118549-037) is designed for the Ford Focus 5Dr. Hatch only. Verify your vehicle matches this specification before purchasing.
