Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2012-2016 Subaru Impreza Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118581 (Part #TK118581) fits 2012-2016 Subaru Impreza models. The 2016 model year is the last year covered by this part number. For newer models, check for an updated version.
The 2012-2016 Subaru Impreza Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118581 (Part #TK118581) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The T-Connector is a wiring adapter that connects to your vehicle's taillight housings to provide trailer lighting connections. It includes a black box control unit, multiple wire leads (yellow, brown, green, white, red, and black), and a 4-flat connector for trailer use. The system requires a 10 amp fuse and must be fully connected and tested before use.
This T-Connector (part number 118581-037) is designed for the Impreza Sedan. The manual does not specify compatibility with other vehicles or body styles.
You will need: trim panel remover, drill with 3/32" bit, 1/4" socket, wire crimpers, wire cutters, 10mm socket and ratchet (or 10mm wrench), and a test probe. Safety glasses are required during installation.
The kit includes: T-Connector adapter ends (with yellow, brown, and green wires), a black box control unit, white wire with eyelet, black 12 gauge wire, red wire, yellow butt connectors, a ring terminal, a yellow fuse holder with 10 amp fuse, double-sided tape, cable ties, and a mounting screw for the ground connection.
Yes. You must disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable before connecting the fuse holder to the positive battery terminal. This is done in step 9. After all other connections are complete, you reconnect the negative cable in step 10.
You must temporarily remove the rear door threshold, cargo net, and cargo cover. You also need to partially remove the rear interior trim panels on both the driver and passenger sides by removing several trim panel fasteners. These items are reinstalled in step 12 after the T-Connector is secured.
Starting on the driver's side, separate the vehicle's wiring connectors behind the taillights by carefully releasing the locking tabs. Attach the T-Connector end containing the yellow and brown wires to the driver's side taillight housing. Route the T-Connector containing the green wire below the threshold cover to the passenger's side taillight housing and repeat the connection. Ensure connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place and do not damage the tabs.
Mount the black box on the driver's side using the double-sided tape provided. The manual does not specify an exact location beyond "driver's side," but it should be positioned near the taillight connectors for convenient wire routing.
Yes. You must drill one 3/32" hole on the driver's side near the taillight connectors to secure the white ground wire with an eyelet and screw. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damaging the vehicle or causing injury. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces.
Drill a 3/32" hole on the driver's side near the taillight connectors to secure the white ground wire with the eyelet and screw provided.
Attach the black 12 gauge wire to the red wire from the T-Connector black box using the supplied yellow butt connector. This connection is made in step 7.
You have two routing options: (1) route the black wire through a grommet and along the exterior frame, or (2) follow the existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery. Either way, avoid areas that may pinch or break the wire. If using the exterior route, be careful to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or other points that may pinch or break the wire.
The T-Connector uses a 10 amp fuse. The fuse is installed in the yellow fuse holder provided with the kit and is connected between the black 12 gauge wire and the vehicle's positive battery terminal.
After disconnecting the negative battery cable, cut the fuse holder wire and attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 gauge wire using the yellow butt connector provided. The 10 amp fuse is installed in the fuse holder. Reconnect the negative battery cable after all other connections are complete.
The T-Connector uses the following wire colors: yellow and brown wires (driver's side taillight connection), green wire (passenger's side taillight connection), white wire (ground), red wire (from black box), and black 12 gauge wire (battery connection).
Always wear safety glasses during installation. Before drilling, verify what is behind any surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into exposed surfaces. When routing wires, avoid areas that may pinch, cut, or melt the wire, including hot pipes, heat shields, and the fuel tank. Read and follow all warnings printed on the vehicle's battery. Do not exceed the towing manufacturer's rating or the product's amperage ratings.
The manual states you must not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer's rating (including in your vehicle owner's manual) or the specific amperage ratings stated on the product. However, the specific amperage rating of this T-Connector is not provided in the manual. Refer to the product label or contact the manufacturer for this specification.
After installation is complete, test and verify the T-Connector with a test light or by connecting an actual trailer. For the initial test, reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly.
Secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness with the cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling, being careful to avoid areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire. Reinstall all plastic trim panels, threshold, storage covers, floor covering, and other items that were removed during installation, taking care not to pinch or cut the wires. Store the 4-flat connector in the trunk area when not in use, and be careful not to pinch the harness in the door latch.
