Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. The kit includes the T-Connector harness with yellow, brown, green, and red wires; a black converter box; a white ground wire with eyelet; a black 12 gauge power wire; a yellow fuse holder with 10 amp fuse; a yellow butt connector; cable ties; and a ring terminal. A screw is provided for securing the white ground wire.
Required tools are: trim panel remover, 10 mm socket and ratchet or 10 mm wrench, drill with 3/32" drill bit, wire crimpers, wire cutters, test probe, and Phillips head screwdriver.
Yes. You must disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable before connecting the fuse holder to the positive battery cable in Step 9. The negative cable is reconnected in Step 10 after the fuse is installed.
Open the trunk and remove the threshold panel. Partially remove the corner felt trunk liner on both sides to expose the taillight wiring harness. On the driver's side, separate the vehicle's taillight connectors carefully without breaking the locking tabs. Attach the T-Connector end containing yellow and brown wires to the driver's side. Route the T-Connector containing the green wire below the threshold cover to the passenger's side taillight housing and repeat the connection process with the green and red wire end.
Yes. You must drill one 3/32" hole on the driver's side to secure the white ground wire with an eyelet using the provided screw. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into any exposed surfaces.
The fuse rating is 10 amps. The 10 amp fuse is installed in the yellow fuse holder after the negative battery cable is reconnected.
The T-Connector uses four wires: yellow and brown wires connect to the driver's side taillight connector; green and red wires connect to the passenger's side taillight connector. The white wire is the ground wire, secured to a grounding point on the driver's side. The black 12 gauge power wire connects from the red power wire on the converter box to the vehicle's positive battery terminal through a fuse holder.
The black 12 gauge power wire can be routed in one of two ways: either through a grommet and along the exterior frame, or following the existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery. Avoid areas that may pinch or break the wire. If routing through a grommet and along the exterior, avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or other points that may pinch or break the wire.
Mount the black converter box on the driver's side in a flat, out-of-the-way location using the double-sided tape provided. The box should be positioned near the taillight connectors.
Route the 4-flat connector through the driver's side trim panel into the side storage compartment and store it there when not in use.
Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed. For the initial test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly.
Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer rating or: maximum stop/turn light of 1 per side (2.1 amps), or maximum tail lights of 5.6 amps. Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Consult the vehicle's owner's manual and instruction sheet for additional information.
Secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness with the cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling. Be careful to avoid any areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire. After securing the harness, reinstall the plastic trim panels, threshold, storage covers, floor covering, and other items removed during installation, being careful not to pinch or cut the wires.
Before connecting, verify that the mating surfaces of the vehicle harness connectors match the T-Connector ends. All connector surfaces should be clean and free of dirt. Ensure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place after connection.
