Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. The black and red wires connect to the vehicle battery through a 10 amp fuse holder.
A 10 amp fuse is installed in the yellow fuse holder. The fuse is removed during step 8 when connecting the power wires to the battery, and then reinstalled in step 9 after the negative battery cable is reconnected.
1. Remove the three screws from each taillight housing and carefully pull the taillights away from the vehicle. 2. Locate the taillight wiring harness connectors on both sides. 3. On the driver's side, insert the T-Connector end with the yellow wire between the vehicle's taillight connectors and lock into place, ensuring the locking tabs are fully engaged. 4. On the passenger's side, repeat the process using the T-Connector end with the green wire. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before connecting.
Route the harness containing the green wire and the 4-flat connector down the opening behind the taillight on the driver's side. Route the harness containing the green wire underneath the vehicle and up through the opening behind the passenger's side taillight. The black 12 ga. wire and red wire can either be routed through a grommet along the exterior frame, or follow existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery. Avoid areas that may pinch or break the wire.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the taillight connector. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area. Drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the supplied eyelet and screw. Do not drill into the vehicle floor, bed, or any exposed surfaces.
1. Disconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable. 2. Remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder if not already removed. 3. Cut the fuse holder wire and attach the ring terminal to the vehicle's positive (+) battery cable. 4. Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 ga. wire using the supplied yellow butt connector. 5. Connect the black 12 ga. wire and red wire from the T-Connector black box using the supplied yellow butt connector. 6. Route these wires through a grommet along the exterior frame or follow existing wiring to the battery, avoiding hot pipes, heat shields, and the fuel tank.
Locate a flat surface in an out-of-the-way place inside the vehicle and mount the black box module to prevent damage or rattling. The exact location is at your discretion, but it should be secure and protected from impact.
Secure the remainder of the harness with the cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling. Be careful to avoid any areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire. This includes routing away from hot surfaces and sharp edges.
Mount the 4-flat connector end in an accessible location using a bracket or electrical box (not included with the product). Choose a location that is easy to reach when connecting or disconnecting a trailer.
All connections must be complete before testing. Test and verify the installation using a test light or by connecting an actual trailer once installed. For the initial test, reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. This ensures all connections are functioning properly before towing.
The manual does not specify the amperage rating of the T-One® T-Connector. However, you must not exceed the lower of either the towing manufacturer's rating (as stated in your vehicle's owner's manual) or the specific amperage ratings stated on the product itself.
