Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The manual does not specify which vehicle makes, models, or years are compatible with this product. Contact the manufacturer or your retailer with your vehicle's year, make, and model to confirm fitment before purchasing.
The manual does not specify whether battery disconnection is required. Consult the manufacturer or a qualified installer before beginning work.
The manual does not list specific tools required for installation. You will need a test light or trailer to test the installation after completion (step 7). Consult the manufacturer for a complete tool list.
The manual does not state whether professional installation is required or recommended. Given the wiring work and interior trim removal involved, contact the manufacturer or a qualified installer if you are unsure of your ability to complete the installation safely.
You must remove both tail light assemblies, partially remove the rear interior plastic trim panel on the left (driver's) side, open the vehicle's jack storage compartment, and remove the threshold cover plate between the rear doors. These removals expose the openings needed to route the T-connector harness and access the tail light wiring connectors.
The T-connector has four wires: red, green, yellow, and the vehicle's factory harness. The red wire connects to the vehicle's center black wiring harness connector from the tail light assembly. The green wire connects to the vehicle's top grey wiring harness connector from the tail light assembly. The yellow wire also connects to the vehicle's center black wiring harness connector (repeated connection). Route the green and red wires from the passenger side through the tail light opening; route the yellow wire across the vehicle under the threshold cover.
Disconnect the vehicle's center black wiring harness connector from the tail light assembly, being careful not to damage the locking tabs. Plug the T-connector's harness containing the red wire between the two separated halves of the factory connector.
Disconnect the vehicle's top grey wiring harness connector from the tail light assembly, being careful not to break the locking tabs. Plug the T-connector's harness containing the green wire between the two separated halves of the factory connector.
Route the yellow wire across the vehicle under the threshold cover that was removed in step 2. Route the T-connector's harness containing the yellow wire out from inside the vehicle through the bottom of the tail light opening. Then connect it to the vehicle's center black wiring harness connector using the same method as the red wire (step 4).
Route the T-connector's harness ends containing the green and red wires from the passenger side out from inside the vehicle through the tail light opening.
Tuck the yellow wire under the threshold panel and secure it. Then reinstall the plastic trim panels, jack storage panel, and tail lights.
Test the installation with a test light or trailer (step 7). This verifies that the wiring connections are correct and the adapter is functioning properly before reassembling all trim panels and tail lights.
When disconnecting the vehicle's center black wiring harness connector, be careful not to damage the locking tabs. When disconnecting the top grey wiring harness connector, be careful not to break the locking tabs. These tabs secure the connectors and damage may prevent proper reconnection.
The manual does not specify compatible vehicles. Contact the manufacturer or retailer with your vehicle's year, make, and model to confirm fitment.
