Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

No. The T-Connector requires a factory tow-plug harness to function. It connects directly to the vehicle's existing tow-plug harness, which is located underneath the vehicle on the passenger's side frame rail near the rear tire. If your vehicle does not have this factory harness, the T-Connector cannot be installed.
Yes. On the Kia Sorento, you must lower the spare tire to gain access to the vehicle wiring. This is the first step in the installation process.
On the Hyundai Veracruz, the access hole is located inside the bumper support channel, above the passenger side exhaust. Route the T-Connector harness plugs through this hole to access the vehicle's tow-plug harness.
The required tools are: trim panel remover, wire cutters, 10 mm socket and ratchet or 10 mm wrench, Phillips head screwdriver, and test-probe.
The package includes the T-Connector harness, a black box (control module), double-sided tape for mounting, and cable ties for securing loose wires. A bracket or electrical box for mounting the 4-Flat connector end is not included and must be sourced separately.
1. Locate the vehicle's tow-plug harness underneath the vehicle on the passenger's side frame rail near the rear tire. 2. Remove the protective cap carefully without breaking the locking tabs. 3. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt. 4. Insert the T-Connector harness into the vehicle's tow-plug harness and lock into place. 5. Verify that connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. 6. Return the protective caps to the customer.
Route the T-Connector harness rearward to the back of the bumper fascia. Then route it along the inside of the bumper toward the center of the vehicle. Avoid routing near hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any points that may pinch or break the wire.
Route the T-Connector harness along the inside of the bumper support channel toward the center of the vehicle. Mount the 4-Flat end in an accessible location with a bracket or electrical box (not included). Avoid routing near hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any points that may pinch or break the wire.
Mount the T-Connector black box using the double-sided tape provided onto the bottom of the bumper support channel. Secure all loose wires with the cable ties provided.
On some Kia Sorento vehicles, the vehicle wiring harness is located behind a protective cover on the driver's side frame rail. Remove the plastic trim fasteners securing the protective cover to access the vehicle's wiring harness.
1. Ensure all connections are complete. 2. Reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. 3. Test and verify the installation with a test light or by connecting a trailer once installed.
Do not exceed the lower of your vehicle's towing manufacturer rating or: Maximum stop/turn light: 2 per side (4.2 amps); Maximum tail lights: (7.5 amps). Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual and instruction sheet for additional information.
Wear safety glasses during installation. Route the wire carefully to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any points that may pinch or break the wire. Remove protective caps carefully without breaking the locking tabs. Keep all connector surfaces clean and free of dirt. Read and follow all vehicle warnings and installation instructions before beginning.
All connector surfaces must be clean and free of dirt to ensure proper electrical connection and function of the T-Connector. Dirt or debris can prevent the connectors from seating fully and may cause electrical faults.
