Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2016-2023 Mazda CX-9 Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118278 (Part #TK118278) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The T-One® T-Connector is a trailer wiring harness module designed to provide electrical connections for towing a trailer. It connects to your vehicle's existing trailer tow plug and grounds to the vehicle's electrical system, allowing you to safely power trailer lights and accessories. The product includes a black box-module that houses the electrical connections and a harness with cable ties for secure routing.
Yes, the T-One® T-Connector (part number 118278-037) is designed for the Mazda CX-9. The installation instructions are specific to this vehicle model. If you have a different model year or variant, confirm compatibility with the manufacturer or your retailer before purchasing.
You will need: a trim panel puller, a test-probe, and a 10mm socket or wrench. The trim panel puller is used to carefully remove interior trim panels without damaging clips. The test-probe is used to verify electrical connections. The 10mm socket or wrench is used to loosen and tighten the ground stud nut.
The T-One® T-Connector includes a black box-module, a harness with a white wire with ring terminal for grounding, cable ties for securing the harness, and an 8-pin tow plug adapter. The manual does not specify whether additional fasteners or connectors are included beyond these items.
You must remove the following items to access the spare tire area and trailer tow plug: the cargo nets, cargo floor hatch, all floor coverings, the threshold plate, and the lower interior trim panels on the passenger's side only. The trailer tow plug is located behind the trim panel on the passenger's side. Be careful not to damage clips when removing these components.
Locate the vehicle's trailer tow plug behind the lower interior trim panel on the passenger's side. Insert the 8-pin tow plug adapter into the tow plug and lock it into place. Ensure that the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. The adapter serves as the connection point between the T-Connector harness and the vehicle's electrical system.
Locate the existing ground stud near the tow plug connector. Loosen the nut on the stud. Place the T-Connector's white wire with ring terminal onto the stud. Retighten the nut securely, making sure that all existing ground connections remain attached. This ground connection is essential for the T-Connector to function properly.
Mount the black box-module on a flat surface in an out-of-the-way location inside the vehicle. This placement prevents damage to the module and reduces rattling during vehicle operation. Avoid areas where the module could be struck or where it might interfere with vehicle operation or occupants.
Use the cable ties provided with the T-Connector to secure the harness along its route from the tow plug to the black box-module. Route the harness carefully to avoid areas where it could be pinched, cut, or melted by hot surfaces. Secure all sections of the harness to prevent damage and rattling during vehicle operation.
After installation, reinstall all interior trim panels, the threshold plate, storage covers, floor coverings, cargo floor hatch, and cargo nets that were removed during installation. Be careful not to pinch or cut the T-Connector wires when reinstalling these components. Then test and verify the installation using a test light or by connecting a trailer before operating the vehicle.
All connections must be complete before testing. To test, reset the vehicle electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. Then verify the installation using a test light or by connecting a trailer to confirm that all circuits are functioning correctly. Do not operate the vehicle with a trailer until the T-Connector has been tested and verified to be working properly.
The manual states that you must not exceed the lower of two ratings: the towing manufacturing rating in your vehicle's owner's manual, or the specific amperage ratings stated on the T-Connector product itself. The manual does not list the specific amperage rating for this product. Check the product label or contact the manufacturer for the exact amperage specification.
Yes. Overloading circuits can cause fires. You must not exceed the stated product ratings or the towing manufacturing rating in your vehicle's owner's manual, whichever is lower. Always read and follow all warnings and instructions printed on your vehicle's battery before installation. Exceeding the amperage rating is a serious safety hazard.
Always wear safety glasses during installation. Use all safety precautions recommended in the manual. Be careful not to damage vehicle clips when removing trim panels. Avoid pinching, cutting, or melting wires during installation and reassembly. Read and follow all warnings and instructions included with the product and in your vehicle's owner's manual before beginning installation.
