Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The 2004-2007 Toyota Highlander Tekonsha Plug & Play T-Connector Adapter Trailer Wiring 118248 (Part #TK118248) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The Tow-Plug Adapter is an electrical connector that integrates with your vehicle's factory tow harness to enable trailer lighting control. It allows you to connect a trailer's electrical system to your vehicle's towing circuit. The adapter must be fully connected and all wiring complete for proper function.
The Tow-Plug Adapter is designed for vehicles with a factory tow harness connector on the driver's side. The manual does not specify which vehicle makes, models, or years are compatible. Before purchasing, verify that your vehicle has a factory tow harness connector and consult the manufacturer or your vehicle's owner's manual to confirm compatibility.
The Tow-Plug Adapter connector must match your vehicle's factory tow harness connector surfaces. Before installation, check that the mating surfaces of your vehicle harness connectors match the Tow-Plug Adapter ends. All connector surfaces must be clean and free of dirt for proper fit and function.
You will need a 13mm socket and ratchet (or 13mm wrench) and a test-probe. These tools are required to loosen and re-tighten the ground stud bolt and to test the installation after completion.
The Tow-Plug Adapter kit includes the adapter connector, a 10A fuse, double-sided tape for mounting the black box, and cable ties for securing the harness. The 4-flat connector should be stored in the trunk or rear cargo area when not in use.
The factory tow harness connector is located on the driver's side of the vehicle, accessible after opening the rear tailgate and removing access panels, threshold, and trunk floor panels and trays.
On the driver's side, you must remove the access panels, threshold, trunk floor panels, and trays. Set aside all removed items carefully to avoid damaging parts. These items will be repositioned after installation is complete.
Locate the vehicle's factory tow harness connector on the driver's side. Separate the connectors carefully without breaking the locking tabs. Verify that the mating surfaces are clean and match the Tow-Plug Adapter ends. Insert the Tow-Plug Adapter and lock it into place, ensuring connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs engaged. Be careful not to damage the locking tabs.
Locate the existing ground stud on the driver's side. Loosen the bolt on the stud, place the screw eyelet (provided with the adapter) onto the stud, and re-tighten the bolt. This completes the ground connection for the adapter.
Consult your vehicle's owner's manual to locate the towing fuse location. Insert the provided 10A fuse into that location. This fuse protects the towing circuit from overcurrent.
On the driver's side, mount the black box using the double-sided tape provided in the kit. Secure the remainder of the harness with the cable ties provided. Avoid areas that could cut or pinch the wire to prevent damage or rattling.
Secure the harness with the cable ties provided. Be careful to avoid any areas that would cut or pinch the wire, as this can cause damage or rattling. Plan the routing to keep wires away from sharp edges, moving parts, and heat sources.
No drilling is required. The Tow-Plug Adapter uses the existing factory tow harness connector and ground stud. The black box is mounted using double-sided tape, and the harness is secured with cable ties.
The maximum rating for stop/turn lights is 1 per side at 2.1 amps. Do not exceed this rating or the lower of your towing manufacturer's specification, as overloading the circuit can cause fires.
The maximum rating for tail lights is 5 amps. Do not exceed this rating or the lower of your towing manufacturer's specification, as overloading the circuit can cause fires.
A 10A fuse is provided with the kit. This fuse must be installed in the towing fuse location specified in your vehicle's owner's manual to protect the towing circuit.
Before using the adapter, test and verify the installation with a test light or by connecting an actual trailer. All connections must be complete for the Tow-Plug Adapter to function properly. Use a test-probe to verify that all electrical connections are working correctly.
Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Do not exceed the lower of your towing manufacturer's rating or the maximum amperage limits: 1 stop/turn light per side (2.1 amps) and tail lights (5 amps). Always consult your vehicle's owner's manual and instruction sheet for additional information about safe towing capacity.
Store the 4-flat connector in the trunk or rear cargo area when not in use. This protects the connector from damage and keeps it accessible for future use.
Test and verify the installation using a test light or by connecting an actual trailer. Use the test-probe (included in required tools) to check that all electrical connections are functioning correctly. All connections must be complete for the adapter to function properly.
After installation, verify that all connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place, the ground connection is secure, the 10A fuse is installed, the black box is mounted securely, and all harness wires are properly routed and secured with cable ties. Test the installation with a test light or trailer to confirm all lights function correctly.
The adapter requires a factory tow harness connector on the driver's side. Verify your vehicle has this connector and that its mating surfaces match the adapter ends before purchasing. The manual does not list specific vehicle makes or models.
You need a 13mm socket/ratchet (or wrench), test-probe, and the included 10A fuse, double-sided tape, and cable ties. No drilling or welding is required.
No. The adapter uses your existing factory tow harness connector and ground stud. The black box mounts with double-sided tape; no drilling, cutting, or welding is required.
Maximum 1 stop/turn light per side (2.1 amps) and tail lights (5 amps). Do not exceed these or your towing manufacturer's lower rating, as overloading can cause fires.
Use the included test-probe or connect a trailer to verify all lights function. All connections must be complete for proper operation.
A 10A fuse is provided and must be installed in the towing fuse location specified in your vehicle's owner's manual.
