Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The Tekonsha Tow Harness, 7-Way TK118281 (Part #TK118281) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Yes, the T-Connector is designed for Nissan Pathfinder, Xterra, Frontier, and Equator models. The manual confirms fitment for all four vehicles. However, the manual does not specify model years, so contact the manufacturer or your installer to confirm compatibility with your specific year.
You need a trim panel puller and a test probe. The trim panel puller is used to remove the passenger side floor sill and kick panel without damaging fasteners. The test probe is used to verify the installation after completion.
The kit includes relays, a jumper harness, a 7-way socket, cable ties, and foam tape. A bracket or electrical box for mounting the 7-way socket is not included and must be obtained separately.
The 12-pin jumper plug is located in the vehicle cab on the passenger's side, behind the kick panel. You will need to use a trim panel puller to temporarily remove the passenger side floor sill and kick panel to access it.
The vehicle tow plugs are located near the driver's side rear tire, accessed from underneath the vehicle. Remove the protective caps from the plugs before connecting the T-connector harness.
You must use only the relays included with the T-Connector kit. Using relays that differ from the included ones can result in the unit not functioning or may damage the vehicle and/or trailer.
Use a trim panel puller. First pull the floor sill upwards (1), then pull it out towards the rear of the vehicle (2). Be careful not to damage the panel fasteners during removal.
Insert the jumper harness with relays into the vehicle's 12-pin harness and lock into place. Ensure that the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Secure the remainder of the jumper harness with the provided cable ties and foam tape to prevent damage or rattling, being careful to avoid areas that would cut or pinch the wire.
From underneath the vehicle, locate the vehicle tow plugs near the driver's side rear tire. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt. Connect the T-connector end to the vehicle's mating connector. Be careful not to damage the locking tabs and ensure that connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Plug the 7-way socket into the Trailer Tow Harness and route it to the center of the vehicle. Mount the 7-way end in an accessible location using a bracket or electrical box (not included). Secure the harness with the provided cable ties, being careful to avoid areas that would cut or pinch the wire.
Do not exceed the following limits: stop/turn light max 10 amps, tail lights max 10 amps, backup max 10 amps, power circuit max 20 amps, trailer brakes max 18 amps (3 axles/6 brakes). Do not exceed the lower of your vehicle manufacturer's rating or these limits. Overloading the circuit can cause fires.
Wear safety glasses during installation. Read and follow all vehicle warnings and installation instructions before beginning. Use all safety precautions during installation. Avoid damaging panel fasteners, locking tabs, and connector surfaces. Do not cut or pinch wires when routing and securing the harness.
All connections must be complete for the T-Connector to function properly. Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed. Ensure that all connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place and that the jumper harness is properly secured.
The T-Connector fits Nissan Pathfinder, Xterra, Frontier, and Equator models. Confirm your specific model year with the manufacturer.
Tools: trim panel puller and test probe. Included parts: relays, jumper harness, 7-way socket, cable ties, and foam tape. You must provide a bracket or electrical box to mount the 7-way socket.
No. You must use only the relays included with the kit. Using different relays can cause the unit to malfunction or damage the vehicle and/or trailer.
Stop/turn light: 10 amps max. Tail lights: 10 amps max. Backup: 10 amps max. Power circuit: 20 amps max. Trailer brakes: 18 amps max (3 axles/6 brakes). Do not exceed these limits or your vehicle manufacturer's rating, whichever is lower.
Wear safety glasses. Read all vehicle warnings and installation instructions before starting. Do not damage panel fasteners, locking tabs, or connector surfaces. Avoid cutting or pinching wires during routing.
Ensure all connections are complete and fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Test and verify the installation with a test light or by connecting a trailer.
