Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Yes. You must disconnect and isolate the vehicle's negative battery terminal before beginning installation. Reconnect the negative battery cable only after all wiring is complete, tested, and all coverings and grommets are replaced.
1. Disconnect and isolate the vehicle's negative battery terminal. 2. Locate the positive battery post underneath the hood on the driver's side. 3. Open the tailgate and use a 10mm socket to remove the rear combination lights and set them aside. 4. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before connecting any wiring.
Beginning at the driver's side tail light pocket, connect the housing containing the T-One T-connector ends with yellow, brown, and blue wires to the vehicle wiring connector. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt. Then route the T-One T-connector end with red and green wires behind the rear bumper fascia to the passenger side access point and up into the tail light pocket. Repeat the connection step from the driver's side. Finally, connect the T-One T-connector ends to the rear combination lights, being careful not to damage the locking tabs and ensuring the connector is fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Replace the rear combination lights.
Locate the ground stud in the driver's side taillight pocket and secure the T-connector's ring terminal with the nut provided. Alternatively, locate a suitable grounding point near the adapter such as the vehicle frame or crossmember. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area. Route the white/blue/black wires through an existing grommet on the firewall into the engine compartment, creating a small hole in the grommet if needed. 3. Route the white wire to an existing vehicle chassis ground point using the provided ring terminal. 4. Route the black wire to the vehicle's positive post using a 30 amp fuse holder (Brake Control), butt connector, and ring terminal. 5. Route the blue wire (Electric Brake Output) to the body harness blue wire using a butt connector. 6. Cover the blue/black wires (and partially the white wire) from the grommet to the fuse holder using supplied convoluted tubing. 7. Route the red wire to the cold side switch of the brake pedal using the supplied wire tap or best suited alternative. 8. Secure the brake harness connector near the desired brake control mounting location.
1. Determine the 7-way mounting location. 2. Route the 7-way harness containing the 7 wires behind the rear bumper fascia and over the bumper support bracket towards the mounting location. 3. Using the wire insertion detail provided, pin the 7-way connector. 4. Connect the 7-way connector and 7-way socket. 5. Mount the 7-way (note: bracket is not included). 6. Secure the harness with the cable ties provided to prevent damage or rattling, being careful to avoid areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire.
Drilling is required only if you use an alternative grounding point instead of the existing ground stud in the driver's side taillight pocket. If drilling is necessary, drill a 3/32" hole in the vehicle frame or crossmember (never in the vehicle floor or bed) and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Some grommets may need to be altered to allow wires to pass through; seal altered grommets with silicone.

Apply heat directly to the butt connectors using a heat gun or other heat source, working from the center out to the edges, until the tubing recovers and the adhesive flows. Allow the connectors to cool before inspecting the splice and checking integrity.
Do not exceed the following circuit capacities: maximum 2 stop/turn/backup lights per side (4.2 amps total), maximum tail lights (12 amps), maximum 7-way 12 volt positive (30 amps). Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual for additional information on your vehicle's electrical capacity.
When using a volt meter or circuit tester, carefully probe one wire at a time. Do not probe across two wires or across the vehicle structure, as this can cause electrical damage or injury. Wear safety glasses during the entire installation process.
After installation is complete: 1. Reconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable. 2. Test and verify the installation with a test light or by connecting an actual trailer. 3. Check that all lights function correctly (tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, backup lights). 4. Verify that the 7-way connector powers up and all pins function as expected. After installation: 1. Ensure all coverings, grommets, and components removed during installation are replaced. 2. Verify that altered grommets are sealed with silicone. 3.
