Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

A brake control harness is included but the brake control unit itself is not; it must be purchased separately (compatible models: 90195, 90885, or 90160).
Yes, this kit is designed for the Ford Maverick. The manual is titled "Ford Maverick 7-Way Vehicle Complete Kit" and provides installation instructions specific to this vehicle.
The brake control harness in this kit is designed to work with Tekonsha brake controls models 90195, 90885, or 90160. If you have a different brake control model, compatibility is not confirmed by this manual. Contact Tekonsha at 800-632-3290 or visit www.tekonsha.com to verify compatibility with your specific brake control unit.
Required tools are: Phillips head #2 screwdriver, wire cutters, wire strippers/wire crimpers, tester or volt meter, 8mm socket, trim panel puller, ratchet, and heat gun. The heat gun is essential for sealing butt connectors.
Yes. The manual requires you to locate the vehicle's battery on the driver's side under the hood, then disconnect and isolate the vehicle's negative battery terminal before beginning installation. The negative battery cable must remain disconnected until the final completion step.
Open the rear tailgate and remove the 8mm bolts retaining the taillight assemblies on both driver and passenger sides. Disconnect the vehicle wiring harness from both taillight assemblies, being careful not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the T-One connector ends (yellow wire for driver side, green wire for passenger side) between the vehicle wiring connectors and lock into place. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before insertion.
Mount the T-One black box underneath the vehicle below the driver's side taillight pocket using the double-sided tape provided. The module must be mounted so that the epoxy side points toward the ground to prevent water buildup.
Yes. You must locate a suitable grounding point near the black box, such as an existing ground stud, or drill a 3/32" hole to secure the white ground wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle and personal injury. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area before securing the wire.
Starting on the driver's side underneath the vehicle, route the harness containing the yellow wire up through the opening between the bed side and frame to the driver's side taillight pocket. For the passenger side, route the harness containing the green wire along the rear bumper area to the passenger's side, then up through the opening between bed side and frame to the passenger's side taillight pocket. The manual recommends using a fish wire between the taillight pocket and bed side to pull the harness through for ease of installation.
Route the jacketed cable containing the black/blue/red wires from underneath the vehicle along the vehicle's body up to the engine compartment battery location. Connect the black wire to the vehicle's positive battery post using a 30-amp fuse holder (labeled "7-way") with a supplied butt connector. Ensure the 30-amp fuse is removed before connecting the ring terminal to the positive battery post. See the wiring detail diagram for reference.
Route the brake control harness's white/blue/black wires through an existing grommet on the firewall into the engine compartment (create a small hole in the grommet if needed). Route the white wire to the vehicle's chassis ground point and secure with the provided ring terminal. Route the black wire to the vehicle's positive battery post under the hood, connecting via a 30-amp fuse holder, butt connector, and ring terminal. Connect the blue wire (electric brake output) to the body harness blue wire using a butt connector. Cover the blue/black/red wires (and partially the white) with supplied convoluted tubing from the grommet to the fuse holder. Secure the brake harness connector near your desired brake control mounting location.
Determine your desired 7-way mounting location. Route the 7-way harness containing the 7 wires behind the rear bumper fascia and over the bumper support bracket toward the mounting location. Using the wire insertion detail diagram, pin the 7-way connector. Connect the 7-way connector to the 7-way socket and mount the assembly. Note: the mounting bracket is not included; you must source and install your own bracket.
The 7-way connector wires are: Yellow (backup lights), Brown (right/stop lights), Red (left/stop lights), White (ground), Blue (trailer brakes), Green (tail lights), and Black (+12V battery). The blue/green wires connect to the passenger side rear combination light, and the red/brown wires connect to the driver side rear combination light.
The kit includes one 25-amp fuse and two 30-amp fuses. The 25-amp fuse goes in the tow harness power module. One 30-amp fuse goes in the 7-way harness power fuse holder, and another 30-amp fuse goes in the brake control power fuse holder. All fuses must be fully inserted into their holders with no breaks in the fuse.
Do not exceed these limits or overloading may cause fires: maximum 2 stop/turn/backup lights per side (4.2 amps total), maximum tail lights (7.5 amps), and maximum 7-way 12-volt positive (30 amps). Consult your vehicle's owner's manual for additional information.
Avoid routing wires through hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire. If routing through a grommet and along the exterior of the vehicle, be especially careful. Before drilling any holes, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle and personal injury. Do not drill into the vehicle floor, bed, or any exposed surfaces.
Apply heat directly to the butt connectors using a heat gun or other heat source, working from the center out to the edges, until the tubing recovers and the adhesive flows. Allow the connectors to cool completely before inspecting the splice and checking its integrity.
Secure the harness with the provided cable ties to prevent damage or rattling, avoiding areas that could pinch, cut, or melt the wire. Replace all coverings, grommets, and other components that were removed. Some grommets may need to be altered to allow wires to pass through; seal altered grommets with silicone. Reconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable. Test and verify the installation with a test light or by connecting an actual trailer.
The manual does not specify maintenance intervals or retorque requirements. After installation, periodically inspect cable tie security and ensure all connectors remain clean and properly seated. If you experience any electrical issues, refer to the troubleshooting guide or contact a Tekonsha-approved installer.
