Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Do not probe across two wires or vehicle structure with a tester. When splicing, use appropriate gauge wire splices; blue wire taps are for 16–18 gauge wire only. Repeat the connection step from the driver's side at the passenger side. 5. Connect the T-One T-connector ends to the rear combination lights, ensuring the connector is fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Replace the rear combination lights.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the ModuLite box, such as the vehicle frame or cross member (do not drill into the vehicle floor or bed). Clean all dirt and rustproofing from the area. Drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the supplied eyelet and self-tapping screw. Ensure the ground connection is solid and free of corrosion.
Route the body harness with red/black/blue wires from underneath the vehicle on the driver's side down the frame rails, following the existing body harness to the engine compartment. Use yellow butt connectors to connect the body harness (jacketed wire) to the ModuLite. Specifically, connect the red/black wire to the red wire (jacketed wire) of the ModuLite. The kit includes two fuse holders and two fuses: a 20 amp fuse for the tow harness and a 30 amp fuse for the 7-way connector. The brake control harness uses a 30 amp circuit breaker, but use a 20 amp circuit breaker if towing trailers with 1–3 axles.
Route the brake control harness black wire to the vehicle's positive battery post underneath the hood. Connect it using a 30 amp circuit breaker, breaker boot, wire assembly, butt connector, and ring terminal. However, if towing trailers with 1–3 axles, use the included 20 amp circuit breaker instead of the 30 amp. Ensure the ring terminal is in full contact with the battery post.
Route the red wire to the cold side switch of the brake pedal. Connect it using the supplied wire tap or the best suited alternative. The cold side switch is typically located on the brake pedal assembly, but the exact location varies by vehicle. According to the 7-way wiring diagram: Black = +12V Battery, Green = Tail lights, Brown = Right turn/stop light, Red = Left turn/stop light, White = Ground, Blue = Trailer brakes, Yellow = Backup lights.
Route the brake control harness white/blue/black wires through an existing grommet on the firewall and into the engine compartment. If the wires do not fit through the existing grommet, create a small hole in the grommet to pass the wires through. After installation, seal any altered grommets with silicone to prevent water and debris entry.
Route the blue wire (electric brake output) from the brake control harness to the blue wire of the body harness. Connect them using a yellow butt connector. This connection allows the brake control to communicate with the trailer brake system.
Route the black wire from the body harness to the vehicle's positive battery post underneath the hood. Connect it using a 30 amp fuse holder, butt connector, and ring terminal. This wire powers the 7-way connector system.
Route the red wire from the body harness to the vehicle's positive battery post underneath the hood. Connect it using a 20 amp fuse holder, butt connector, and ring terminal. This wire powers the tow harness.
Secure all harnesses with the supplied cable ties (8.5" and 14.5") to prevent damage or rattling. Be careful to avoid any areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire. Route wires away from hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tanks, and sharp edges. Ensure cables are not under tension and have some slack for movement.
Apply heat directly to the butt connectors using a heat gun or other heat source, working from the center out to the edges, until the tubing recovers and the adhesive flows. Allow the connectors to cool completely before inspecting the splice and checking its integrity. Do not apply excessive heat that could damage the wire insulation.
Replace all coverings, grommets, and other components that were removed for ease of installation. Some grommets may need to be altered to allow wires to pass through. Seal any altered grommets with silicone to prevent water and debris entry and maintain the vehicle's weatherproofing.
After reconnecting the vehicle's negative battery cable, test and verify the installation using a test light or by connecting an actual trailer. Check that all lights function correctly: tail lights, turn signals, brake lights, and backup lights. Verify that the 7-way connector powers up and that all pins are working. If any function fails, refer to the troubleshooting guide or contact a Tekonsha-approved installer.
Use appropriate gauge wire splices that match the wire gauge being spliced. The blue wire taps provided in the kit are for 16–18 gauge wire only. If your vehicle uses different gauge wires, use splices rated for that gauge to ensure safe and reliable connections.
When using a volt meter or circuit tester, carefully probe one wire at a time. Do not probe across two wires or across the vehicle structure, as this can cause incorrect readings or damage to the tester. Always test individual connections to verify proper voltage and polarity.
First, ensure the T-One T-connector ends are fully inserted and locked in place at both the driver's and passenger's side tail light pockets. If they are not fully seated, the connector will not function. After checking, remove the tow harness power module 25 amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat your test. If the problem persists, check the chassis ground connections.
Several issues could cause no power: 1) The installation may have activated circuit protection—start the vehicle and turn off all functions (tail lights, brake, turns), then remove the 25 amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test. 2) The 25 amp fuse may not be fully inserted or may be broken—check the fuse holder and replace if needed. 3) The fuse holder may not be properly connected to the positive battery post—verify the ring terminal is in full contact. 4) The module may not be receiving power—use a volt meter to check for voltage on either side of the yellow butt connector near the module. Remove the 25 amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test after each check.
Check the chassis ground connections. Ensure the ring terminals are in full contact with the vehicle's bare chassis metal (not painted surfaces). A poor ground connection will prevent the system from functioning. Clean any corrosion or paint from the ground point and ensure the white wire eyelet is securely fastened. After correcting the ground, remove the 25 amp fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test.
Removing the 25 amp fuse for 10 seconds resets the circuit protection in the power module. If the connector still does not work after this reset, the problem is likely not a blown fuse or temporary overload. Check that: 1) The T-One T-connector ends are fully inserted and locked at both tail light pockets, 2) The chassis ground connections are solid and clean, 3) The fuse holder is properly connected to the positive battery post, and 4) The module is receiving voltage at the yellow butt connector. If all these checks pass, the power module itself may be faulty and require replacement.
