Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Locate the vehicle's 10-pin connector on the driver's side behind the trim panel near the rear seat belt bracket/coil. Check that the mating surfaces of the vehicle harness connectors match the 10-pin connector adapter ends. The connector should fit without forcing. Be careful not to damage the locking tabs and ensure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Mount the black box module on a flat surface in an out-of-the-way place in the rear driver's side cargo area to prevent damage or rattling. The module should be secured after routing the remaining harness behind the trim panel from the 10-pin connector location.
Route the 18-gauge blue wire behind the side cargo trim panels and up above the head liner. Locate the group of wires going through the grommet into the rear hatch. Remove the access panel on the inside of the rear hatch. Behind the backup light, route the blue wire through the grommet following the existing wire harness behind the rear hatch trim panel to the access door. Connect the blue wire from the module to the vehicle's blue wire in the 3-pin connector using the wire tap provided.
From inside the vehicle on the driver's side, starting at the module black box, route the body harness with red/black/blue wires to the engine compartment. Route the wires following the existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery. Route wires carefully to avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire.
Route the body harness black wire to the vehicle's positive post underneath the hood. Using the 30 AMP fuse holder (7-Way), butt connector, and ring terminal provided, connect to the battery. This provides power to the 7-Way connector.
Route the brake control harness white/blue/black wires through an existing grommet on the firewall into the engine compartment by creating a small hole in the grommet. Route the white wire to the vehicle's existing chassis ground point using the provided ring terminal. Route the black wire to the vehicle's positive post using a 30 AMP fuse holder (brake control), butt connector, and ring terminal. Route the blue wire (electric brake output) to the body harness blue wire using a butt connector. Route the red wire (cold side input) to the body harness red wire using a butt connector. Cover the blue/black/red wires (and partially the white wire) from the grommet to the fuse holder using the supplied convoluted tubing.
Determine the 7-Way mounting location. Route the 7-Way harness containing the 7 wires behind the rear bumper fascia and over the bumper support bracket towards the mounting location. Using the wire insertion detail, pin the 7-Way connector. Connect the 7-Way connector and 7-Way socket. Mount the 7-Way (bracket not included).
Locate the grommet plug on the floor of the vehicle behind the driver's side trim panel. Remove the grommet plug and route the wires with the taped end out and underneath the vehicle. Slit the grommet and re-install it around the convoluted tubing. Re-mount the grommet in the existing hole.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector. Clean dirt and rustproofing from the area. Drill a 3/32" hole and secure the white wire using the eyelet and screw provided. Before drilling, verify what is behind the surface to avoid damage to the vehicle or personal injury. Do not drill into exposed surfaces.
Start by opening the driver's side rear door. Locate the cup holder and carefully pry it away from the side trim panel using a trim panel puller. Near the rear door opening, use a trim panel puller to carefully partially pull the trim panel back to expose the area near the seat belt bracket/coil.
After installation, test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed. Reconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable before testing. If the 7-Way connector is not functioning properly, ensure the T-One T-Connector ends are fully inserted and locked in place. Remove the tow harness power module 25 AMP fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test.
Apply heat directly to the butt connectors using a hot air gun or other heat source, working from the center out to the edges, until the tubing recovers and the adhesive flows. Allow the connectors to cool before inspecting the splice and checking integrity. This ensures a watertight seal.
Some grommets will need to be altered to allow wires to pass through. After installation, seal altered grommets with silicone to prevent water intrusion and protect the wires.
Secure the harness with the cable ties provided (24 ties of 8.5" and 1 tie of 14.5") to prevent damage or rattling. Be careful to avoid any areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire. Replace all coverings, grommets, or other components that were removed for ease of installation.
The manual does not specify maintenance intervals or retorque requirements after installation. It is recommended to periodically inspect the installation to ensure all connections remain secure and the harness is properly secured with cable ties.
First, ensure the T-One T-Connector ends are fully inserted and locked in place. Remove the tow harness power module 25 AMP fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test. If still not working, check the chassis grounds and ensure ring terminals are in full contact with the vehicle's chassis. Remove the 25 AMP fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test.
The installation may have activated circuit protection. Start the vehicle and turn all functions off: tail (headlights), brake, and turns. Remove the tow harness power module 25 AMP fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test. Ensure the 25 AMP fuse is fully inserted into the fuse holder with no breaks. Verify the fuse holder is connected properly to the positive post of the battery. Remove the 25 AMP fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test. Ensure the module is connected to B+. Using a tester or volt meter, check for voltage on either side of the yellow butt connector near the module. Remove the 25 AMP fuse for 10 seconds and repeat the test.
