Tekonsha is a leading manufacturer of electronic trailer brake controllers, pioneering the category in the 1970s. The lineup spans proportional units such as the Prodigy P3 and Prodigy iD, time-delayed controllers, the wireless Prodigy RF, plus vehicle-specific wiring harnesses, adapters and trailer brake components engineered for smooth, predictable stopping at any speed.
Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. Matched controller bundles pair a unit with the correct harness. Products are tested to meet and often exceed published industry standards.

The Tekonsha Tow Harness, 7-Way Complete Kit TK22124 (Part #TK22124) Drilling is required for installation. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The manual specifies this T-Connector is designed for Ford Ranger, but does not identify specific model years or generations. Verify your vehicle's year and generation match the product listing before purchase, or contact the manufacturer to confirm compatibility with your specific Ranger model.
The kit includes the T-Connector harness, a black 12 ga. power wire, a yellow butt connector, a fuse holder, a 15 amp fuse, a 7-way socket, and cable ties. A bracket or electrical box for mounting the 7-way socket is not included and must be sourced separately.
You will need a 10mm socket and ratchet or 10mm wrench, wire crimpers, wire cutters, and a test-probe. These tools are required to disconnect connectors, secure fasteners, prepare wiring, and test the installation.
Yes. You must disconnect the vehicle's negative (−) battery cable before connecting the ring terminal to the positive (+) battery cable. Reconnect the negative cable after the fuse holder connection is complete and before installing the 15 amp fuse.
The Tow-Plug harness is located underneath the vehicle on the driver's side, behind the rear tire. It has connectors that match the T-Connector harness. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before connecting.
Separate the vehicle's Tow-Plug connector carefully without breaking the locking tabs. Insert the T-Connector harness into the vehicle's Tow-Plug harness and lock it into place. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt before connection.
Route the black 12 ga. wire along the exterior frame or follow the existing wiring along the thresholds into the engine compartment up to the battery. Avoid areas that may pinch or break the wire. If routing through a grommet and along the exterior, carefully avoid hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any other points that may pinch or break the wire.
Install a 15 amp fuse into the fuse holder. This fuse is provided with the kit and must be installed after reconnecting the vehicle's negative battery cable.
The yellow butt connector is used to connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black 12 ga. wire. It is provided with the kit and is installed during step 4.
Mount the 7-way socket in an accessible location at the center of the vehicle using a bracket or electrical box. The bracket or electrical box is not included with the kit and must be sourced separately. Secure the remainder of the tow harness with the provided cable ties to prevent damage or rattling.
Use the cable ties provided with the kit to secure the remainder of the tow harness. Route the harness carefully to avoid any areas that would cut or pinch the wire, including hot pipes, heat shields, and the fuel tank.
Test and verify the installation with a test light or trailer once installed. For the initial test, reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the key from the ignition. All connections must be complete for the tow harness to function properly.
Do not exceed the lower of the towing manufacturer rating (including in your vehicle owner's manual) or the specific amperage ratings stated on the product. The manual does not specify the product's amperage rating; refer to the product label or contact the manufacturer for this specification.
Always wear safety glasses during installation. Read and follow all warnings and cautions printed on the tow vehicle's battery. Avoid routing wires through hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any points that may pinch or break the wire. Overloading circuits can cause fires; do not exceed stated product ratings.
The T-Connector is designed for Ford Ranger. Verify your specific model year and generation match the product listing, as the manual does not specify which Ranger generations are compatible.
You need a 10mm socket and ratchet (or 10mm wrench), wire crimpers, wire cutters, and a test-probe.
Yes. Disconnect the negative battery cable before connecting to the positive terminal, then reconnect it after the fuse holder connection is complete.
A 15 amp fuse is required and is provided with the kit.
The manual does not describe any drilling or permanent modifications. The T-Connector connects to the existing Tow-Plug harness, and the 7-way socket is mounted using a bracket or electrical box (not included).
Test with a test light or trailer once installed. Reset the vehicle's electrical system by temporarily removing the ignition key for the initial test.
